The rise of foldable phones has opened up new possibilities in terms of design and screen. Two models that stand out are the OnePlus Open and the Galaxy Z Fold 5. While Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a primary display and a secondary display, the OnePlus Open seeks to push the boundaries of foldable design. Both these phones offer high-level specifications that promise a smooth user experience and quality photographic results.

Comparison of the design and screens of the OnePlus Open and the Galaxy Z Fold 5

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 features a foldable design with two separate screens. The main screen features a 7.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel offering a resolution of 2176 × 1812 and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. The second, smaller screen measures 6.1 inches with a resolution of 2316 × 904, also equipped with Dynamic AMOLED 2X technology. The main display offers vibrant colors, deep blacks, and a high peak brightness of 1,750 nits, ideal for outdoor viewing. However, the notable flaw is the center crease, although Samsung has worked to reduce it, it is still noticeable in certain conditions.

The design is also an important aspect of the Galaxy Z Fold 5. It has managed to reduce the space between the two screens without leaving a visible mark. Thinner and lighter than its predecessor, this foldable phone comes in a variety of attractive colors, offering interesting customization to users.

The OnePlus Open, in the same vein as the Galaxy Z Fold 5, offers a foldable design. However, he stands out for his desire to push the limits. Details on the exact specifications of its screen are limited. However, OnePlus promises an uncompromising immersive experience with vibrant colors, deep blacks and increased fluidity.

In terms of design, the OnePlus Open seeks to offer a balance between functionality and aesthetics. Although we don’t have any information on dimensions or weight yet, OnePlus aims to create a device that is ergonomic and stylish, despite its folded form.

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 5 offers a well-established design with two distinct screens, providing an immersive viewing experience, although the center fold remains a drawback. For its part, the OnePlus Open seeks to push the limits of foldable design, offering a promising experience in terms of vibrant colors and fluidity.

Performance:

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is equipped with the powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, a custom version of the Snapdragon processor designed specifically for Samsung handsets. With 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, this handset delivers fast and responsive performance. Apps open instantly, and even resource-intensive games run smoothly. The ability to play games like War of Tanks with high-quality graphics and a smooth 60fps frame rate is a real plus.

For its part, the OnePlus Open is also equipped with the standard Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. However, it stands out with a huge amount of RAM, with 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM, providing a top-notch experience. Apps load instantly, animations are smooth, and even resource-intensive games can be played without issue. Additionally, the OnePlus Open features an innovative 3D cross-hinge cooling system, which ensures efficient heat dissipation and prevents overheating during heavy use.

Camera:

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is equipped with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 13 MP ultra-wide lens, and a 10 MP secondary lens with 3x optical zoom. In bright, well-lit environments, photos taken with the 50MP Snapper reveal sharp details and vibrant colors. Additionally, HDR performance is generally impressive, with balanced lighting. However, it should be noted that colors can sometimes appear slightly saturated. In low light conditions the main lens remains usable, but it’s clear that the software plays an important role in improving the results.

The OnePlus Open stands out as the first foldable phone to collaborate with popular camera maker Hasselblad, a testament to the close attention paid to photo quality. Featuring a triple camera array, it includes a custom 48-megapixel Sony sensor, a custom 64 MP Omnivision telephoto lens with 3x and 6x optical zoom, as well as a 48 MP ultra-wide sensor. With its 48 MP main sensor, the OnePlus Open delivers bright and detailed photos, even when using the zoom function. In low-light conditions it also excels, delivering sharp, well-balanced, color-rich images. The 3x and 6x optical zoom of the 64 MP lens even allows you to capture remarkable shots beyond these limits.

Battery and charging

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is equipped with the same 4,400 mAh battery as its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4. This means it offers similar endurance, which is already commendable given its power-hungry screen. In our tests, we managed to use the phone throughout the day with around 15-20% battery remaining, even after around five hours of screen use. This demonstrates a solid performance in terms of autonomy.

When it comes to charging speeds, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is about average. It manages to reach 50% charge in just 32 minutes, while a full charge takes just over an hour and 20 minutes. While this isn’t the fastest charge you’ll find on the market, it’s still acceptable for most users.

Let’s move on to the OnePlus Open, which is equipped with a larger battery, namely 4,805 mAh. This phone is interesting because it has two cells spread across the entire phone, one of 3,295 mAh and one of 1,510 mAh. Our reviewer used the OnePlus Open for around 18 hours straight, with up to five hours of screen on and several apps open, and never ran out of battery. This demonstrates excellent autonomy, even with intensive use. What really sets the OnePlus Open apart is its OnePlus SuperVOOC 68W fast charging technology. This is the fastest charging speed of any folding phone currently available in Europe. With this feature, you can reach 50% charge in just 22 minutes and a full charge in just 46 minutes. This makes it an ideal choice for users who tend to forget to charge their phone or who need a quick charge.
