The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max was unveiled in China on 28 September 2026, and for now it has neither a release date nor a price in Europe. Its spec sheet sets the bar very high: two 200MP sensors tuned with ARRI, a display rated at 10,000 nits, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chip and an 8,800 mAh battery. It is aimed first at photo and video enthusiasts who can live with a large 233 g phone. Honor has promised a launch in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, without giving a timetable.
Introduction: the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max, a camera phone built like a cinema camera
Honor changed its naming this year. The most ambitious model in the family is no longer called Pro but Pro Max, and the brand writes the name without a space: Magic9 Pro Max. It sits at the top of a three-phone range, alongside the more compact Honor Magic 9 and an 11,000 mAh Magic 9 Super Edition.
Where Vivo works with Zeiss, Oppo with Hasselblad and Xiaomi with Leica, Honor has teamed up with ARRI, the German maker of the Alexa cameras used on a large share of film sets.
This page separates what the brand has confirmed from what databases such as GSMArena report, and from what is still unknown. Our newsroom has not handled the phone, and no independent review has been published yet.
Verdict in brief: an outsized spec sheet, a European release with no date
Awaiting review — On paper, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max ticks almost every box: twin 200MP sensors, ARRI colour science, Qualcomm’s top chip, 8,800 mAh and a triple water-resistance rating. Two things are missing before it can be recommended: independent reviews and a price in euros.
- Who it is for: Mobile videographers and photographers who want a filming tool in their pocket, and heavy users looking for two days of battery life.
- Avoid if: You want a light, compact phone, or something you can buy today with a local warranty and Google services installed out of the box.
What looks promising:
- Two stabilised 200MP sensors, including a large-format periscope telephoto
- ARRI Cinema mode in 10-bit LogC3, up to 4K at 60 fps
- 8,800 mAh battery, 100W wired and 80W wireless charging
- 6.8-inch LTPO display with low reflectance
- IP68, IP69 and IP69K water and dust resistance
Still to be confirmed:
- Release date and price in France and the rest of Europe
- Battery capacity of the international version
- Real-world photo and video quality, since no reviews are out
- Length of software support outside China

Three figures stand out. The 200MP telephoto sits on a 1/1.4-inch sensor, larger than the main sensor in many rivals. The 8,800 mAh battery is close to 80% bigger than a typical 5,000 mAh flagship cell. And the 233 g are a reminder that all of this comes with weight.
Honor Magic 9 Pro Max design: metal, 233 g and an ARRI-inspired turret
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max drops the glass back for an all-metal unibody shell. To let radio signals through regardless, the brand describes a dual micro-slot antenna cut into the frame. Metal survives drops better than glass, but it does scratch.
The camera block is what catches the eye. Its layout, according to Honor, echoes the three-lens turrets of the ARRIFLEX cameras that appeared in 1937. The module is raised so that fingers do not stray over the lenses.
A big phone, best suited to big hands
According to GSMArena, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max measures 161.6 × 77 × 8.6 mm and weighs 233 g. That is the footprint of an iPhone Pro Max or a Galaxy Ultra, with a few extra grams. The standard Magic 9, with its roughly 6.3-inch display, will be easier to handle.
Two physical keys join the usual buttons: a camera shutter and a key dedicated to artificial intelligence. Unlocking combines 3D face recognition with an ultrasonic fingerprint reader. Three colours are planned: black, silver and green.
IP68, IP69 and IP69K: dust and water are not a worry
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max carries three ratings at once. IP68 covers immersion, while IP69 and IP69K cover high-pressure jets of hot water. For readers in West and Central Africa, that means real peace of mind against dry-season dust and tropical downpours. Water damage is still rarely covered by warranty, though.
Display: 6.8-inch LTPO and a claimed 10,000-nit peak
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max uses a 6.8-inch LTPO OLED panel. Its refresh rate moves between 1 and 120Hz depending on what is on screen, which saves power on a static page. GSMArena lists a resolution of 1,320 × 2,868 pixels, or about 464 pixels per inch. That is very sharp.
Honor quotes a peak brightness of 10,000 nits. That figure applies to tiny areas of an HDR image, for a brief moment. The number that matters in sunlight, the high-brightness mode, is around 2,000 nits according to GSMArena. That is more than enough to read a message under a midday sun in Yaoundé.
An anti-reflective coating and toughened glass
The most interesting part may lie elsewhere. The brand announces an anti-reflective treatment that brings reflectance down to 1.5%. Outdoors, cutting reflections often matters more than pushing brightness.
Protection comes from Honor’s own NanoCrystal Shield. Gizmochina mentions a silicon nitride coating made of 5,600 layers, which Honor says is far more resistant to scratches and drops than ordinary glass. No independent lab has verified that yet. PWM dimming at 4,320Hz should keep flicker in check.
Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and two in-house chips
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max runs on the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, Qualcomm’s fastest chip, built on a 2 nm process. Its two prime cores reach 5 GHz, a first for a phone. Honor claims more than 5.5 million points on AnTuTu, and Kimovil records a score of 5,522,833 points on version 12 of the benchmark. Those results still need to be backed up by independent measurements.
No current app will trouble this chip. The real question is heat, in a metal body that conducts warmth straight to the hand.
Memory, storage and connectivity
There are four configurations: 12GB + 256GB, 12GB + 512GB, 16GB + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB, with LPDDR5X memory and UFS 4.1 storage. There is no microSD slot. If you plan to shoot in LogC3, 512GB is the sensible minimum.
Two Honor-designed components round things off. The H1 imaging chip, built on a 6 nm process, handles photo and video processing. The C3 radio chip is meant to improve reception in poorly covered areas, an argument that will resonate in many neighbourhoods across Central Africa. Bluetooth 6.3, NFC and an infrared port are on board as well. GSMArena also mentions Wi-Fi 8, which the brand did not detail in its press release.
Another oddity: four lines in a single phone. The handset takes two nano-SIM cards and two eSIM profiles, two of which can be active at the same time. Handy for juggling an MTN number, an Orange number and a European line.
Camera: the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max camera bets on two 200MP sensors
This is the heart of the project. The rear block of the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max brings together three modules, backed by laser autofocus and a colour spectrum sensor:

- Wide: 200MP, 1/1.28-inch sensor, f/1.57 aperture, gimbal-style optical stabilisation over 3 degrees, 23 mm equivalent.
- Periscope telephoto: 200MP, 1/1.4-inch sensor, f/2.6 aperture, optical stabilisation, 3.5x optical zoom (85 mm) according to GSMArena.
- Ultra-wide: 50MP, f/2.0 aperture, 122-degree field of view.
- Selfie: 55MP in a square format, paired with a 3D depth sensor.
Two large-format sensors and a zoom that can be extended
On a smartphone, the telephoto is often the poor relation: a small sensor and mediocre results as soon as the light drops. The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max goes the other way, with a 1/1.4-inch sensor behind the periscope. In theory, 85 mm portraits and concert shots should benefit directly.
To reach further, the brand sells two teleconverter lenses that screw on in front of the periscope. The G200 takes the focal length to 200 mm, the G500 to 500 mm. A video kit is also offered with SmallRig. Gizmochina quotes a Master Photographer bundle at 10,999 yuan, or about €1,412 (around 926,000 FCFA); what exactly it contains is something to check with the retailer.
ARRI and the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max: what the partnership changes for video
ARRI Cinema mode records at up to 4K and 60 frames per second, in 10-bit, with the LogC3 curve and the ARRI Wide Gamut 3 colour space. Those are the settings of the Alexa cameras. A shot filmed on the phone should therefore drop into a professional edit. Honor claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range, a manufacturer figure.
For those who would rather not grade, 14 ARRI looks are preinstalled and a library offers 87 in total. A system of four directional microphones takes care of sound capture. Outside the cinema mode, GSMArena lists 4K at up to 120 frames per second.
A square 55MP selfie sensor
On the front, the square 55MP sensor lets you frame in 1:1, 16:9 or 9:16 without turning the phone. The idea makes vertical video and group photos easier. Honor is exploring other avenues for mobile video too, such as the Honor Robot Phone and its camera on a motorised arm.
Battery and charging: the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max battery reaches 8,800 mAh
The silicon-carbon battery is rated at 8,800 mAh typical capacity and 8,600 mAh rated capacity. Honor cites an energy density of 1,000 Wh/L, thanks to 40% silicon in the anode. With no published measurements, two days of everyday use is a reasonable expectation.

For anyone who has to live with power cuts, that counts for a lot. Wired reverse charging goes up to 27W according to GSMArena, enough to revive a pair of earbuds or a second phone.
100W wired, 80W wireless
Wired charging reaches 100W, and wireless charging 80W with a stand sold separately. Honor gave no charging times in its international press release. Whether the charger is in the box will depend on the market.
Good to know — The 8,800 mAh figure applies to the Chinese version of the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max. The Magic 8 Pro lost part of its capacity when it reached Europe, at 6,270 mAh, because of battery transport rules. A similar cut on the new model is possible, but the brand has not confirmed it.
Software: MagicOS 11, Android 17 and the YOYO assistant
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max runs MagicOS 11, based on Android 17. Artificial intelligence is central to it, with three features put forward. YOYO Memory captures and files useful content so you can find it later. YOYO Tasks understands a request and chains several actions on your behalf. A dedicated key, finally, creates video clips ready to share. It remains to be seen which of these will be available outside China, and in which languages.
Updates and Google services
GSMArena reports seven major Android updates. The brand has not yet confirmed that for the international version.
The Chinese version ships without the Play Store or Google services preinstalled, and with plenty of local apps. Unlike Huawei, Honor is not under any restrictions: the models sold in Europe and Africa come with Google from the factory.
Honor Magic 9 Pro Max price and availability: China first

- 16GB + 1TB: 8,499 yuan, or about €1,091 (around 716,000 FCFA).
Pre-orders have been open in China since the announcement. GSMArena puts the start of deliveries at 8 October 2026, a date the brand does not mention in its international press release. Once VAT and distributor margins are added, the European price will be higher.
Honor Magic 9 Pro Max release date in Europe
The Honor Magic 9 Pro Max has no official price in France or elsewhere in Europe to date. In its official press release, Honor states that launches in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, and South-East Asia will be announced soon.
The previous generation gives an idea of scale. The Magic 8 Pro reached Europe in January 2026, roughly three months after China, at €1,299 (around 852,000 FCFA). With component prices soaring, as we explain in our article on the RAM shortage, a price at least on that level looks likely.
West and Central Africa: imports, warranty and networks
Honor names the Middle East and Africa region among its next markets, without specifying countries. In the meantime, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max can only be had in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal by importing it from China or Dubai. The warranty is then limited to whatever the seller offers.
On the network side, Kimovil lists 4G bands B1, B3, B7, B8, B20 and B28 on the Chinese version, along with 5G band n78, the ones most operators in the region use. Even so, check the exact model number with the seller, and which languages the software offers.

Honor Magic 9 Pro Max alternatives
Honor Magic 9
Vivo X500 Pro Max
Oppo Find X10 Pro Max
The standard Magic 9 carries the same pair of 200MP sensors in a more compact body, with an 8,000 mAh battery and a Chinese starting price of 4,999 yuan, or about €642 (around 421,000 FCFA). Photo enthusiasts will also want to compare it with the Vivo X500 Pro Max and its Zeiss colour science, or with the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max and its Hasselblad partnership. On the Samsung side, the Galaxy S26 Ultra is the model these Chinese camera phones are up against.
Conclusion: should you wait for the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max?
On paper, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max is one of the most complete smartphones of this year-end. The twin 200MP sensors, the work done with ARRI and the 8,800 mAh battery add up to a coherent package, aimed at people who create images.
Our view stays cautious for two reasons. No independent review yet allows a judgement on the photos, the heat or the real battery life. And importing a Chinese version means going without a local warranty and factory-installed Google services. If your current phone is still holding up, wait for the European announcement.
Good to know — This page will be updated as soon as Honor announces the date and price for Europe, and again when the first reviews are published. The overall score and the detailed ratings will be added at that point.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max price?
In China, the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max starts at 6,499 yuan for 12GB + 256GB, or about €834 (around 547,000 FCFA), and rises to 8,499 yuan for 16GB + 1TB, or about €1,091 (around 716,000 FCFA). There is no official European price yet. Its predecessor, the Magic 8 Pro, launched at €1,299 (around 852,000 FCFA) in Europe.
When is the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max release date in Europe?
Honor has not given a date. The brand only says that launches in Europe, the Middle East and Africa will be announced soon. The previous model reached Europe about three months after its Chinese unveiling. At that pace, a release between December 2026 and early 2027 is conceivable. That is an estimate, not official information.
Is the Honor Magic9 Pro Max waterproof?
Yes. Honor announces a triple IP68, IP69 and IP69K rating. The phone therefore resists dust, immersion in fresh water and high-pressure jets of hot water. Sea water, soap and ageing seals can all reduce that protection.
How long does the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max battery last?
The Chinese version of the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max has an 8,800 mAh silicon-carbon battery, with 100W wired and 80W wireless charging. No independent measurement has been published yet, but that capacity points to two days of everyday use. The European version could get a smaller battery, as happened with the previous model.
Tell us in the comments what you expect from a phone at this price, and have a look at our Magic 9 page if the Pro Max format feels too imposing.
