The Honor Magic 9 is the compact model in Honor’s new flagship range, unveiled in China on 28 September 2026. Inside a 6.37-inch body it packs an 8,000 mAh battery and two 200MP camera sensors tuned with ARRI, the cinema camera maker. It is aimed at people who do not want a very large screen but refuse to give up zoom or stamina. For now it is only sold in China, from 4,999 yuan, about €642 (about 421,000 FCFA).
Introduction: the Honor Magic 9, a small phone that gives nothing up
Honor has reshuffled its range this year. The family has three phones: the Honor Magic 9 Pro Max, the 6.8-inch flagship, a fan-cooled Super Edition, and the standard model covered here. The brand writes Magic9, with no space.
Most manufacturers keep their best sensors for their biggest phones. With the Honor Magic 9, the brand does the opposite: its most compact handset gets a 200MP periscope, triple water-resistance certification and a tablet-sized battery.
This page separates what is confirmed from what is not. Our newsroom has not handled the device, and independent reviews are still scarce five days after the launch.
Verdict in brief: a very complete compact, but China-only for now
Awaiting review — On paper, this is one of the best-equipped compact phones of 2026: two 200MP sensors, 8,000 mAh and top-tier water resistance. What remains to be checked is the real quality of the photos, how hot it runs in such a small body, and above all the price and date of any European release.
- Who it is for: Anyone who wants a phone under 6.4 inches with no compromise on zoom, battery life and water resistance.
- Avoid if: You want to buy right now with a local warranty and Google services installed out of the box, or you are after a light phone.
What looks promising:
- Two 200MP sensors, including a 3.5x periscope
- 8,000 mAh battery in a 6.37-inch body
- IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings
- A restrained Chinese price given the hardware
Still to be confirmed:
- European release and pricing
- 209g weight, high for a compact
- LTPS panel, less frugal than an LTPO one
- Previous-generation chip

Three numbers sum up the Honor Magic 9. First, 8,000 mAh: that is the capacity of a large phone, slipped into a 6.37-inch one. Then the 200MP of the telephoto, when compact rivals often settle for 50MP on that module. And finally 209g, a reminder that all of this weighs something.
Honor has not issued an international press release for this model. Several figures therefore come from the specialist press, such as the exact screen resolution or the update policy outside China.
Design of the Honor Magic 9: sculpted glass, 8.49mm and 209g
The back of the Honor Magic 9 is a single piece of glass, shaped using a process the brand calls cold sculpting. The circular camera island borrows the look of cinema cameras, a nod to the ARRI partnership. Four colours are offered in China: yellow, olive green, white and black.
Compact, but no featherweight
At 8.49mm thick and 209g, the phone weighs as much as plenty of 6.7-inch models. That is the cost of the battery and the periscope. One-handed use should stay comfortable, but this is not a light phone.
Water resistance: three certifications
The Honor Magic 9 stacks IP68, IP69 and IP69K ratings. The first covers immersion, the other two cover high-pressure jets of hot water. Between the rainy season, laterite dust and motorbike rides, that is a real selling point.
The ultrasonic fingerprint reader, under the screen, stays reliable with damp fingers. Two buttons join the usual keys: one for the artificial intelligence assistant and a camera shutter.
Display: a 6.37-inch OLED and a claimed 10,000-nit peak
The Honor Magic 9 has a flat 6.37-inch OLED panel at 1.5K resolution, or 2,664 x 1,236 pixels according to the specialist press. It runs at up to 120Hz and supports Dolby Vision. The 0.95mm bezels are among the thinnest on the market.
A brightness figure to read with caution
Honor quotes a 10,000-nit peak, on a very small area of the image. The useful value is brightness across the whole panel: 2,000 nits. That is more than enough to read a message in full sun in Douala or Dakar.
LTPS rather than LTPO: the trade-off
The panel is an LTPS type, whereas the Pro Max gets an LTPO one. An LTPO panel adjusts its refresh rate in fine steps to save power, while an LTPS panel switches between a few fixed levels. With 8,000 mAh on board, the effect on battery life should stay limited.
Good news for sensitive eyes: PWM dimming reaches 3,840Hz, which reduces flicker at low brightness.
Performance: a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, not the very latest chip
The Honor Magic 9 runs on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, built on a 3nm process, with cores clocked at up to 4.6GHz and an Adreno 840 graphics processor. It is the flagship chip of the previous generation. The Pro Max moves on to the 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6.
A sensible choice
Is that a worry? No. This chip still powers phones sold for more than €1,000 in France, such as the Poco F9 Ultra. It runs every current game at maximum settings. Above all, the choice lets Honor hold its price.
Memory is LPDDR5X and storage is UFS 4.1. There are four configurations: 12 + 256GB, 12 + 512GB, 16 + 512GB and 16GB + 1TB. If you shoot in LogC3, aim for 512GB at the very least.
Heat, the main unknown
A small body sheds heat less easily than a large one. Nothing yet tells us how the Honor Magic 9 behaves over a long gaming session or in 35°C weather. For gamers, the brand in fact offers a different answer, with a fan.
Two in-house chips round things off: the H1 handles image processing, the C3 strengthens radio reception in poorly covered areas. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, NFC and an infrared blaster.
Camera: the Honor Magic 9 camera lines up two 200MP sensors
Photography is the heart of the Honor Magic 9. The rear island holds three modules, joined by a square front sensor:

- 200MP wide camera, 1/1.4-inch sensor, f/1.9 aperture, optical stabilisation;
- 200MP periscope telephoto, 1/1.56-inch sensor, f/2.6, 85mm equivalent, 3.5x optical zoom;
- 50MP ultra-wide, f/2.0;
- 55MP selfie camera in a square format, f/2.0.
A 200MP telephoto in a small phone
The periscope is the centrepiece of the Honor Magic 9. Its 1/1.56-inch sensor is large for a telephoto, which helps in low light. The 85mm focal length is that of portrait lenses. Honor quotes up to 120x digital zoom, a showroom figure: beyond 15x or 20x, expect a heavily processed image.
Both 200MP modules are stabilised and rated CIPA 7.5, according to the brand. The 50MP ultra-wide is more conventional.
Honor also sells an optical add-on, the G200, which clips in front of the periscope. It takes the focal length to 200mm and weighs 88g. Its price does not appear in the sources we read.
Video: what the ARRI partnership changes
ARRI makes the Alexa cameras, a fixture on film sets. On the Honor Magic 9, the partnership translates into a 10-bit LogC3 video mode, the recording curve those cameras use, and 87 ARRI Look renderings to apply. An ARRI Movie Live mode shoots in 2.39:1, the CinemaScope ratio.
A videographer can therefore grade footage the way they would from a professional camera. For a music video director in Abidjan or Yaoundé, the appeal is real. To film a birthday party, automatic mode will do. The same brand is exploring other ideas with its Robot Phone, which carries its camera on a motorised arm.
Selfie: a square 55MP sensor
The front sensor is square. It frames in 1:1, 16:9 or 9:16 without you having to turn the phone. That is handy for the vertical formats social networks favour.
Good to know — A megapixel count does not make a good photo. By default, a 200MP sensor combines its pixels to produce images with less detail but more light. Colour rendering and night processing can only be judged once independent reviews are in.
Battery and charging: the Honor Magic 9 battery reaches 8,000 mAh
Fitting 8,000 mAh into a 6.37-inch phone was unthinkable two years ago. Honor manages it with a silicon-carbon battery, which stores more energy in the same volume than a conventional lithium-ion cell.

Two days of use, on paper
With a 3nm chip and a modestly sized screen, two days of everyday use look within reach for the Honor Magic 9. That is our newsroom’s estimate, not a measurement: no independent endurance test is available yet.
For readers in Africa, that reserve matters more than a benchmark score: a 24-hour power cut will not drain a phone like this.
80W wired charging, 50W wireless
Charging goes up to 80W with a cable and 50W wirelessly, using the brand’s own stand. We found no official charging time. Given the capacity, count on close to an hour for a full charge.
That leaves the European version: several Chinese brands cut the capacity of the models they sell in Europe. Nothing says that will be the case here.
Software: MagicOS 11, Android 17 and the YOYO assistant
The Honor Magic 9 runs MagicOS 11, based on Android 17. The YOYO assistant has its own key on the side of the phone. It can chain several actions from a single request, edit a video clip or convert a file.
All of this applies to the Chinese version, which relies on local language models. Nothing indicates which features will be available in English or other languages.
The Chinese version ships without the Play Store or Google services preinstalled. Honor is not subject to any US restriction: the phones it sells in Europe come with Google out of the box. That is not true of models imported from China.
As for support, the brand promised seven years of updates on its previous European flagships. It has confirmed nothing for this model outside China.
Honor Magic 9 Super Edition: the fan-cooled variant with 11,000 mAh
The Super Edition is confirmed. Honor presented it on the same day. According to Notebookcheck, its list price starts at 4,999 yuan, about €642 (about 421,000 FCFA), the same as the standard model. The Chinese subsidy brings it down to 4,499 yuan for local buyers: the Super Edition is therefore no cheaper than the compact model.
Its flat OLED screen measures 6.81 inches. The chip is the same as in the standard model, but an active fan is added to the cooling system. The battery climbs to 11,000 mAh, with the same 80W wired and 50W wireless charging. The whole thing weighs 227g and is 8.1mm thick.
The trade-off is in the cameras: the telephoto drops to 50MP at 3x and the ultra-wide to 12MP. According to Notebookcheck, Honor has announced no sales outside China for this variant.
Honor Magic 9 price and availability: China first, Europe in 2027?
The Honor Magic 9 price in China
Orders have been open in China since the launch. Here are the prices reported by the press at launch, before taxes and import costs:
- 12 + 256GB: 4,999 yuan, about €642 (about 421,000 FCFA);
- 12 + 512GB: 5,499 yuan, about €706 (about 463,000 FCFA);
- 16 + 512GB: 5,999 yuan, about €770 (about 505,000 FCFA);
- 16GB + 1TB: 6,999 yuan, about €899 (about 590,000 FCFA).
China’s state subsidy takes 500 yuan off these prices for local buyers. Gizmochina notes that the 16 + 512GB version therefore lands at the entry price of its direct rivals, including the Vivo X500, with more memory and twice the storage.
Honor Magic 9 release date in France and Europe
The Honor Magic 9 has no official price in France or elsewhere in Europe as of 3 October 2026. There are only two clues. The first: Honor France’s new products page lists the Magic9 series as coming soon, with an official launch in January 2027. The page does not say which models are concerned.
The second calls for caution. The brand’s international press release mentions only the Pro Max, for which launches in Europe, the Middle East, Africa and South-East Asia are due to be announced soon. The standard model is not in it. Last year, to our knowledge, only the Magic 8 Pro was sold in Europe, at €1,299 (about 852,000 FCFA).
If the compact does reach Europe, you will have to add VAT, retailer margins and the rising cost of components, which we explain in our article on the RAM shortage. A price of around €900 to €1,000 (about 590,000 to 656,000 FCFA) seems plausible to us. That is our newsroom’s estimate, not information from the brand.
No product page exists so far at the big French retailers, Amazon.fr, Fnac, Darty or Cdiscount.
West and Central Africa: imports, warranty and networks
In Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal, the Honor Magic 9 is not officially distributed. It will arrive first through importers, in its Chinese version: a warranty limited to the seller’s own, no Google services out of the box, and no guarantee that the interface will be offered in your language.
Also check the 4G and 5G bands of the exact model number before you buy. Chinese versions do not always cover every frequency used by Orange, MTN or Moov. Ask the reseller for the list.

Alternatives to the Honor Magic 9
Honor Magic 9 Pro Max
Vivo X500
Xiaomi 18 Pro
The Pro Max is the one to get if you want the latest chip, a 6.8-inch LTPO screen and 8,800 mAh, at the cost of 233g on the scales. The Vivo X500 and the Xiaomi 18 Pro are its natural competitors in China. If you are torn between this and a foldable, also look at the Honor Magic V6, already on sale in France.
Conclusion: should you wait for the Honor Magic 9?
On paper, the answer is yes for anyone looking for a compact phone. No rival of this size combines a 200MP periscope, 8,000 mAh and triple water-resistance certification.
Two reasons argue for patience, though. Nobody has yet independently measured the photo quality, heat or endurance of the Honor Magic 9. And nothing guarantees that this model will be sold in Europe.
Good to know — If your current phone is still holding up, wait for January 2027 and the European announcement of the series. You will then know whether the compact is along for the ride, and at what price.
Frequently asked questions
How much does the Honor Magic 9 cost?
In China, the Honor Magic 9 starts at 4,999 yuan for 12 + 256GB, about €642 (about 421,000 FCFA). The 16 + 512GB version costs 5,999 yuan, about €770 (about 505,000 FCFA), and the 1TB version reaches 6,999 yuan, about €899 (about 590,000 FCFA). No price has been announced in Europe.
When does the Honor Magic 9 come out in Europe?
There is no firm date for this model. Honor’s French website lists the Magic9 series for January 2027, without specifying which models are concerned. The brand’s international press release only names the Pro Max for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. So the compact model may well stay in China. We will update this page as soon as there is an official announcement.
Is the Honor Magic 9 waterproof?
Yes. It holds three certifications: IP68 for immersion in fresh water, IP69 and IP69K for high-pressure jets of hot water. That is the highest level on the consumer market. These ratings are measured in a lab on a new device, however. Sea water and ageing seals reduce the protection, and the warranty does not cover corrosion.
What is the difference between the Honor Magic 9 and the Magic 9 Pro Max?
The standard model measures 6.37 inches, against 6.8 inches for the Pro Max. It uses a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 and an LTPS panel, while the Pro Max moves to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and an LTPO panel. The battery is 8,000 mAh instead of 8,800 mAh, charging 80W instead of 100W. The compact weighs 209g, the larger model 233g.
