A Galaxy A15 problem does not always mean a repair, whether it is a black screen, an unresponsive touchscreen, charging or battery drain. For a black or frozen screen, the likeliest cause is a software crash or an empty battery. Plug the phone in, then hold the side key and Volume down for more than 7 seconds.

Galaxy A15 problems: common symptoms and causes

  • Black or frozen screen: software crash, empty battery.
  • Touchscreen not responding: screen protector, accessibility options (TalkBack, Magnification), moisture, software bug, damaged display.
  • Not charging: moisture in the port, cable or charger, debris, damaged port.
  • Overheating: heavy use, demanding apps, hot surroundings, a dubious cable.
  • Fast battery drain: background apps, worn battery.

Before you start

This guide covers the Galaxy A15 4G (SM-A155F) and 5G (SM-A156B). Menu labels in One UI, Samsung’s interface, vary with the version. Install Samsung Members, Samsung’s support app, to run the diagnostics.

Warning: a factory reset erases your personal data, apps, messages, contacts and photos. Back up before you start. The FRP lock (an anti-theft protection tied to your Google account) will then ask for your Google account password.

Warning: never puncture, bend or heat a lithium battery. A swollen battery will not recharge and goes to a collection point; work on a non-flammable surface. Do not charge a phone that is very hot or wet, and have the battery replaced by an authorized service center.

Warning: opening the device can void the warranty, so check the warranty end date first. The battery is covered for 1 year against manufacturing defects. A repair outside an authorized center means non-original parts.

Solution 1: Samsung A15 black or frozen screen

Good to know: we found no Samsung page about the A15 black screen. This procedure follows the one for other Galaxy phones, with no guarantee for this model.

  1. Plug the phone into its charger.
  2. Leave it charging.
  3. Hold the side key and Volume down for more than 7 seconds.
  4. Release the keys when the phone restarts.

The phone should restart and respond again.

Tip: keep both keys pressed even if nothing shows on the screen during those 7 seconds, because a shorter press does not trigger the restart.

Solution 2: Samsung A15 touchscreen not working

If the screen does not respond at all, start with the forced restart from solution 1, because the settings below need touch.

  1. Wipe the screen with a soft, dry cloth.
  2. Remove the screen protector if it is not an original one.
  3. Test the touch again, especially near the edges.
  4. Open Settings > Display > Touch sensitivity.
  5. Turn the option on, which helps with a non-original protector or case.
  6. Open Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack, then turn off this screen reader.
  7. Open Settings > Accessibility > Visibility enhancements > Magnification > Magnification shortcut, then turn off the triple-tap shortcut.
  8. Open Settings > Accessibility > Interaction and dexterity.
  9. Set the touch and hold delay, the tap duration and the option that ignores repeated touches back to their defaults.
  10. Open Samsung Members > Support > Start > Touch screen.
  11. Follow the test instructions.

Touch should respond across the whole surface of the screen.

Settings checked and Touch screen test run: touch should respond across the whole screen.

Tip: in Samsung Members, you can stop the full scan and run just this one test.

Solution 3: Galaxy A15 not charging

A water drop icon means there is moisture in the USB port. Samsung then blocks charging to prevent corrosion, even without contact with water if the air is very humid. If there is no icon, go to step 8.

  1. Unplug the cable.
  2. Wipe the phone.
  3. Gently shake it 5 to 10 times, port facing down.
  4. Let it air-dry until it is completely dry.
  5. Restart the phone.
  6. If the icon stays, open Settings > Apps > Filter and sort and turn on Show system apps.
  7. Open USBSettings > Storage > Clear cache.
  8. Install the update via Settings > Software update > Download and install.
  9. Check that no debris is blocking the port.
  10. Try another Samsung-compatible cable and charger.

The phone should show that it is charging, with no water drop icon.

Warning: keep hair dryers away from the port and never push a metal object into it. Heat damages the battery, and metal damages the contacts.

If the charger is the culprit, here is an original 25 W Samsung charger, compatible with the Galaxy A15.

Solution 4: fast battery drain and overheating

Galaxy A15: the battery drains fast

  1. Open Samsung Members > Support > Phone diagnostics > Start > Battery status.
  2. Read the result: Normal, Weak or Bad.
  3. Open Settings > Battery and device care > Optimize now.
  4. Tap Done.
  5. Open Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Power saving > Background usage limits.
  6. Turn on Put unused apps to sleep.
  7. Lower the brightness.
  8. Turn off Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS and auto sync when you are not using them.

Battery life should improve. The usage breakdown stays visible since the last full charge or over 7 days. A Bad result means a trip to a Samsung service center.

Good to know: unexpected shutdowns, fast drain or poor performance in the cold are signs of wear, according to Samsung. Power saving also limits background network use, syncing and location.

Galaxy A15: the phone gets hot

Games, streaming, GPS, data restoring, large downloads and first-time setup all make the phone warm up. So do direct sun, poor ventilation or a weak signal.

  1. Unplug the phone if it is charging.
  2. Close the open apps.
  3. Let it cool down.
  4. Install the available software update.
  5. Try another Samsung-compatible cable and charger if the heat builds up while charging.

Take the case off too while it cools. The phone should return to a normal temperature.

Solution 5: network, Safe mode and reset

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or mobile network

This reset erases saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth devices and mobile network settings. Your apps and data stay in place.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Reset.
  2. Tap Reset mobile network settings.
  3. Tap Reset settings.
  4. Confirm with Reset.
  5. Enter your Wi-Fi password again.

The connection should come back. On some versions, the option may be called “Reset network settings”.

After the reset, enter your Wi-Fi password again: the connection should come back.

Safe mode

Safe mode helps you spot a faulty third-party app. These steps come from Samsung’s English documentation, so labels may differ on your A15. Uninstalling in step 5 removes the app concerned.

  1. Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen.
  2. Tap the power icon.
  3. Touch and hold Power off.
  4. Tap Safe mode.
  5. Uninstall recent third-party apps.
  6. Restart the phone to leave this mode.

The phone should restart normally, without the problem you saw.

Tip: remove apps one at a time, from the newest to the oldest. You find the culprit without uninstalling everything.

Factory reset

Warning: the next step erases your personal data, apps, messages, contacts and photos. Back up first with OneDrive or Smart Switch. Also note down your Google account password.

Good to know: you can remove the account before the reset, from Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts, by choosing the Google account and then Remove account.

  1. Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
  2. Tap Reset.
  3. Tap Delete all.
  4. Enter the Google password requested after the restart.

The phone should start up like new.

If the screen is unusable, the key method erases the same data. You start it with the phone off.

  1. Connect a USB cable.
  2. Hold Volume up and the Power key until the logo appears.
  3. Scroll to Wipe data/factory reset with Volume down.
  4. Confirm with the Power key.
  5. Choose Factory data reset.
  6. Finish with Reboot system now.

If nothing works

Stop if the forced restart, charging, Safe mode and the Samsung Members test all fail. Stop too if you see a cracked screen, a damaged port or a Bad battery diagnostic. Then contact a Samsung service center, or Samsung by chat or WhatsApp.

Have your proof of purchase ready (warranty). A repair is paid if there is damage or the warranty has expired. Back up before handing the phone in, using Samsung Cloud or Smart Switch.

For a battery replacement, allow about 1 hour on average and turn off the screen lock (fingerprint, PIN, pattern), since the technician inspects the device unlocked. The Samsung battery page explains the procedure. For another model from the brand, see the common Galaxy S20 FE problems.
