MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5: with €600 between them on Apple’s price list, €799 (about 524,000 FCFA) against €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA), our advice is the Air for anyone who keeps a computer for more than four years, and the Neo for people who write, revise and watch series. The first takes five rounds out of seven. The second wins the one that weighs most when money is tight. Neither machine has passed through our hands: everything here rests on published reviews.

Introduction: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, two laptops launched on the same day

They reached the shops together on 11 March 2026 and they weigh the same to the gram: 1.23 kg. The resemblance stops there. One runs on an iPhone chip with 8GB of memory, the other on an M5 with twice as much.

On 25 June, Apple raised almost all its Mac prices, blaming the cost of memory. The small model went up by €100, the big one by €200. Where that leaves us in October: €799 (about 524,000 FCFA) for the Neo, €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA) for the 13-inch Air. The 9 September keynote, all about phones, changed nothing.

We are not copying out the specifications here. They live in our MacBook Neo spec sheet and in the one for the MacBook Air M5. This MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 answers a different question: what does a day, then a month, look like with each of them? What grates. What reassures. What you end up no longer seeing.

The impressions reported here come from Mac4Ever, Tom’s Guide, The Verge, Macworld, Tom’s Hardware, Les Numériques and Que Choisir, credited round by round through this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5.

Verdict in brief: the Air to last, the Neo to pay less

Five rounds to two. In this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 contest, the dearer laptop wins wherever use stretches over years: memory, ports, stamina, artificial intelligence. The cheaper one takes price, obviously, and design by a short head. Overall scores are those of our spec sheets, 8.6 out of 10 for the Air and 8 for the Neo.

Verdict in 30 seconds

8.6/10Our pick

The MacBook Air M5 wins this duel because it asks for no compromise day to day: 16GB of memory, a backlit keyboard, MagSafe and a working day finished with charge to spare. It costs €600 more than the Neo at list price, about €500 on promotion.

For whom Students on technical or creative courses, freelancers and anyone who keeps a computer for five years or more.

Avoid if Your budget stops at €900 or your use comes down to office work, the web and video.

Design: the same weight in the bag, a different look on the desk

Slipped into a backpack between a ring binder and a water bottle, they cannot be told apart: 1.23 kg each. The Air is thinner, 1.13 cm against 1.27 cm, and nobody will feel that while climbing onto a coach bound for Bafoussam.

On a library table, the Neo gets noticed. Citrus yellow, blush pink, indigo or silver, with keys tinted to match the shell. Its sibling stays in a suit, offered in sky blue, silver, starlight or midnight, in a chassis that Macworld criticises Apple for leaving untouched since 2022.

What really separates them is inside. iFixit gives the Neo 6 out of 10: eight screws to remove the bottom cover, a battery screwed in rather than glued. The day it wears out, a neighbourhood repair shop will be able to swap it without a heat gun. When the nearest authorised service centre is a flight away, that argument lands. Both shells are aluminium and fanless, hence silent; only the Air keeps a notch at the top of its screen.

This round of MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 goes to the Neo, narrowly. At equal weight it dares to use colour and opens up more easily, while its elder has little more than a millimetre of thinness to show for itself. Dimensions are in the MacBook Neo technical sheet.

Display: next to a big window, both hand you back the room

Sit near a window in the early afternoon. On either one, the glossy glass shows as much of the surroundings as of your document. Bloomberg finds the Neo tiresome beside a sunlit pane, and Les Numériques, quoted by Mac4Ever, measures high reflectance on the Air, 55.6%.

In this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, brightness settles nothing: 522 cd/m² recorded by Que Choisir on the small one, 515 by Les Numériques on the big one. Well played by the cheaper machine.

The gap shows in the evening. Under a yellow bulb, the Air warms its whites by itself thanks to True Tone and sets its own intensity. The Neo has neither, and no ambient light sensor at all: walking from the lecture hall out into the courtyard, you raise the brightness by hand. You get used to it. After a month, that repeated gesture still reminds you that you bought the entry-level model.

For photo editing the difference turns serious. The Neo’s panel is very accurate in sRGB but fills only 78.6% of the P3 gamut according to Tom’s Guide, whereas the Air’s covers it. Preparing a wedding’s photos for print is a job for the Air. For Instagram, PDFs or Netflix, there is nothing to see between them.

Both panels top out at 60Hz. With 0.6 inch more diagonal, P3 and True Tone, the round goes to the Air despite its notch. A narrow win.

Performance: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 on a day packed with video calls

A click, a window opening, a tab loading: there you will notice nothing. On a single core, Tom’s Guide logs 3,535 points for the Neo in Geekbench 6 and Tom’s Hardware 4,168 for the Air. The Verge places the small one level with a MacBook Air M1, which is very comfortable for writing a dissertation.

They part ways around 3 pm, when everything is open at once. A Mac4Ever journalist spent a whole day on the Neo with his mail, Slack, WhatsApp, music and some fifteen tabs. He saw 6 to 7GB in use out of 8 and had to quit apps so that his video call stayed smooth. That is daily life with 8GB: it works, provided you tidy up behind you. With 16GB, the Air asks for no housekeeping.

Another situation: exporting a video before leaving the room. To convert a twelve-minute 4K file in Handbrake, Tom’s Guide clocks 9 min 57 s on the Neo and 4 min 34 s on the Air.

Apple’s pricier laptop has its weak spot all the same. With no fan, it loses about a third of its power when a computation drags on, according to the stress test run by Tom’s Hardware, and its shell climbs towards 42°C. Thirty minutes of gaming are enough to see it: Macworld notes the throttling after ten minutes, and Cyberpunk 2077 tops out at 27 frames per second at Tom’s Guide. Neither is a console.

In three or four years, soldered memory will date the Neo long before its chip does. This round of MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 goes to the Air, no argument. All the scores are in our MacBook Air M5 spec sheet.

Keyboard and ports: the Neo’s savings seen from a darkened lecture hall

The projector comes on, the room goes dark, and you grope for the right key. The Neo’s keyboard is not backlit on any version. Same scene at home on a load-shedding evening, typing by the glow of the screen. The Air’s lights up and you never think about it again.

Second irritation, a sneakier one. On the €799 Neo there is no fingerprint reader. The password gets typed at every wake and every purchase. Touch ID only comes with the 512GB version, sold at €899 (about 590,000 FCFA). The Air has it as standard.

Then come the ports. The Neo has two that look identical and do different jobs: one transfers at 10 Gbit/s and sends a picture to a monitor, the other is stuck at USB 2. Plug your external drive into the wrong side and the evening backup lasts as long as dinner.

No MagSafe either. If someone trips over the cable, the computer follows. On the Air the magnetic connector pops off, both Thunderbolt ports stay free and two monitors can be connected instead of one.

On video calls, the Air reframes your face with its 12MP camera while the Neo films in 1080p. On sound, a surprise: Mac4Ever finds the Neo’s two speakers unexpectedly full, whereas Macworld says it is disappointed by the Air’s four.

A clear win for the Air. In this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, it is the round where the €600 shows best, every day, with no benchmark needed.

Battery life: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, a day far from any socket

Out the door at 7 am, classes or meetings until 6 pm, charger forgotten on the bed. Both hold. The margin differs.

Tom’s Guide’s automated browsing tests give the Neo 13 hours 28 minutes and the Air 15 hours 28, a two-hour gap. Such protocols flatter. Mac4Ever put the Neo through a real day, with office work, video calls and half an hour of gaming: flat battery after about seven hours.

For the Air, Les Numériques records 13 hours of streaming and Macworld passes 18 hours playing a video file. Translated into a working day, that means getting home in the evening with enough left for a film. During a six-hour power cut it carries on without a thought. So does the Neo, provided it left the house full.

Charging reverses the roles a little. The Neo is happy with 20W: a recent phone’s charger or a USB-C power bank will do, which matters when the electricity only comes back for two hours. Fast it is not: 45 to 50 minutes to climb back to 50% at The Verge. The Air demands 30W at least and 70W for its fast charge.

Round to the Air, which combines the better stamina and the magnetic cable. Our spec sheets give it 9.5 out of 10 on this chapter of MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, against 8.5 for the Neo.

Good to know — No power adapter comes with either Mac in France. Apple sells its own 30W one for €45 (about 30,000 FCFA); a USB-C Power Delivery charger from a reputable brand often costs half as much. You need 20W at least for the Neo, 30W for the Air.

macOS 27 and Siri AI: the same system today, a different future

The same macOS 27 Golden Gate has run on both since 14 September, with the same apps. The Neo is a complete Mac.

What sets this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 apart on the software side is called Siri AI, the new assistant. As of 5 October it speaks only English on the Mac, and Apple promises French by the end of the month. For French-speaking users, a draw in frustration.

Then memory comes back into the conversation. Applesfera writes that 8GB Macs will only get a cut-down version of the assistant, and Hipertextual suggests that some requests would go off to Apple’s servers. The company has detailed nothing. If this is confirmed, the Neo will answer more slowly and need a connection for tasks the Air handles alone. With a capped data plan or temperamental 4G in Bertoua, the nuance is anything but theoretical.

On support, Apple commits to no duration, and nothing guarantees that the hungry features of coming versions will be offered to an 8GB machine. The Air takes this round of MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, for the future more than for the present.

Price: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, €600 on the label and a bit less at the till

A reminder of Apple’s French price list: €799 for the 256GB Neo, €899 for its 512GB version with Touch ID, €1,399 for the 13-inch Air with 16GB and 512GB.

Hardly anyone pays those amounts. In France the Neo was seen at €649 (about 426,000 FCFA) at Carrefour and at €699 on Amazon in August, its 512GB version at €719 at E.Leclerc. The base Air appeared at €1,199 on Amazon in late July, then at €1,249 (about 819,000 FCFA) at Darty and Fnac in early September. We have spotted no new drop since our spec sheets went online on 3 October. In practice, the real gap in MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 sits around €500 to €550 (about 328,000 to 361,000 FCFA).

Do the sums honestly. The Neo you will not regret is the 512GB one with Touch ID, around €720 on promotion. Against it, the discounted Air asks about €500 more, or €85 a year over six years of use. Over three years, the calculation tips the other way.

From Douala, Abidjan or Dakar, the MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 bill changes. Apple runs no store of its own there: both laptops arrive through importers, with shipping, customs and margin, or in a relative’s suitcase. Insist on the invoice, look at the keyboard layout (AZERTY for a French unit, QWERTY if it comes from Dubai) and locate the nearest authorised service centre, because a one-year warranty is only worth something if someone can honour it. At resale, a 16GB Mac should find a buyer for longer than an 8GB model; that is our bet, not a measured market value.

Price goes to the Neo, by a wide margin. For many budgets, this is the round that decides. The promotions recorded this summer are detailed in our full verdict on the MacBook Neo.

Final verdict: MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, which one should you choose?

Choose the MacBook Neo if your computer is for writing, following classes, browsing and watching series, if you plan to keep it three or four years and if a €500 gap means a month’s rent or a plane ticket to you. Take the 512GB version, for Touch ID. And buy it on promotion.

Go for the MacBook Air M5 if you edit video, write code, retouch photos, or if you simply want to forget about your computer for six years. Its 16GB are insurance against slowdowns, against a cut-price Siri AI, against the urge to upgrade in 2029. Do not pay more than €1,250 for it.

One special case, if nothing is urgent. Bloomberg mentions, for the first half of 2027, a second-generation Neo with 12GB of memory and the chip from the iPhone 17 Pro. Nothing official.

To see this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 through, reread our detailed verdict on the MacBook Air M5 then the MacBook Neo sheet.

Our pick

MacBook Air M5 13-inch, 16GB and 512GB: the winner of this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 for anyone who keeps a machine a long time, to be targeted around €1,200 to €1,250 (about 786,000 to 820,000 FCFA) at a retailer. Under €800, the 512GB MacBook Neo on promotion remains a very good buy.

Frequently asked questions

MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5: which one for a student?

In law, literature or management, the Neo does the job for a whole bachelor’s degree: word processing, video calls and annotated PDFs give it no trouble in published reviews. In engineering, architecture or film school, heavy software calls for the Air’s 16GB. If the computer has to serve through a master’s and into a first job, the Air is the more cautious choice of the MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5 match.

Can you work all day with the MacBook Neo’s 8GB?

Yes, with a little discipline. During the full day described by Mac4Ever, mail, Slack, music and some fifteen tabs took up 6 to 7GB, and apps had to be closed to keep a video call smooth. 4K editing, Docker or virtual machines go beyond what the machine can take. That memory is soldered: no upgrade will be possible later.

MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5: what is the battery life difference day to day?

About two hours in Tom’s Guide’s browsing tests, with 13 hours 28 minutes for the Neo and 15 hours 28 for the Air. In mixed use, Mac4Ever drained the Neo in roughly seven hours, while reviews of the Air describe a working day finished with charge in reserve. The Neo keeps one asset: it recharges from a plain 20W phone charger.

Are the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air M5 sold with a charger?

Not in France. The Neo’s box contains a 1.5 m USB-C cable, the Air’s a two-metre USB-C to MagSafe cable, with no power adapter in either case. Budget €45 for Apple’s 30W charger, or markedly less from another brand. Outside Europe, have the seller confirm what is in the box.

Apple publishes the official specifications of the MacBook Neo and the MacBook Air on its French site. And you, in this MacBook Neo vs MacBook Air M5, which way do you lean? Tell us how you use yours in the comments.
