The MacBook Neo is the cheapest new Mac Apple sells: €799 (about 524,000 FCFA) since June, up from €699 when it reached shops on 11 March 2026. Inside a 1.23 kg aluminium shell sits the A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro, behind a 13-inch screen rated at 500 nits. Published reviews describe a laptop that is a pleasure for writing, revising and watching series, held back by 8 GB of soldered memory and a USB port from another age. Students will like it, and so will anyone leaving Windows on a tight budget. Video editors won’t.

Introduction: a Mac with an iPhone chip, €100 dearer than it was in spring

On 4 March 2026, Apple did something many had stopped expecting and announced a laptop below the €700 mark. Delivered a week later, the MacBook Neo follows a recipe the brand had never tried, because it runs on a phone chip, the A18 Pro, instead of one from the M series. Everything else is house tradition.

The pricing honeymoon lasted less than four months. On 25 June, Apple raised almost all of its prices and blamed the memory shortage, a story we told in our piece on the RAM crunch and soaring DDR5 prices. The 256 GB model went from €699 to €799, the 512 GB version from €799 to €899 (about 590,000 FCFA).

Sales did not wait: as early as 20 March, Tim Cook was celebrating a record number of Macs sold to people who had never owned one.

What remains to be seen is whether a computer with 8 GB of memory is still worth €799 at the end of 2026, when the MacBook Air M5 starts at 16 GB and a second-generation Neo is already doing the rounds of the rumour sites.

Verdict in brief: where we land on the MacBook Neo

Wanda-techs was not sent a MacBook Neo. What follows cross-checks Apple’s spec sheet against the reviews by Mac4ever, Tom’s Guide, The Verge, PCMag, the Fnac lab and Que Choisir.

Verdict in 30 seconds

8.0/10Good value

For whom University and secondary-school students, first-time Mac buyers and families after a simple computer for office work, the web and video.

Avoid if You edit 4K video, you develop with Docker or you plan to keep the machine for more than five years.

Read that table with three figures in mind. The 8 GB of memory come first, because they are soldered and will set the date on which the MacBook Neo starts to feel slow. Then the panel’s 500 nits: at this price, Windows rivals often stop at 250 or 300. And the 36.5 Wh battery, a modest number that the chip’s frugality more than makes up for.

MacBook Neo design: aluminium, colour and no fan at all

No plastic anywhere. CNET makes the point: where cheap laptops mix metal with moulded shells, the MacBook Neo borrows the all-aluminium build of the Air and the Pro, 29.75 cm wide and 1.27 cm thick.

The scales read 1.23 kg, exactly the weight of the 13-inch MacBook Air. In a backpack, on the back of a motorbike taxi in Douala, that is still next to nothing.

Four colours, keyboard to match

Silver, blush pink, citrus yellow, indigo. Apple had not dared a palette like this on a laptop since the iBook, and the keys pick up the tint of the shell. The other thing you notice is the missing notch: the camera lives in a bezel slightly thicker than the Air’s.

A case that opens with eight screws

iFixit gives it 6 out of 10 and calls it the most repairable MacBook in fourteen years. The bottom cover is held by eight Pentalobe screws and lifts off by hand. The battery is no longer glued in. It is screwed to a tray, at the cost of eighteen screws to undo. USB-C ports and speakers come out as separate parts.

Memory and storage stay soldered to the logic board. Choosing between 256 and 512 GB is therefore final.

Display: 500 nits delivered, reflections included, True Tone missing

The 13-inch IPS panel shows 2,408 x 1,506 pixels, or 219 pixels per inch. Apple promises 500 nits and independent measurements confirm the claim or come close: 522 cd/m² at Que Choisir, 480 nits recorded by Tom’s Guide.

Colour accuracy is excellent within the sRGB space. Tom’s Guide measures a Delta E of 0.22, invisible to the eye, with 110% of sRGB covered. The wide P3 gamut is another matter, filled to only 78.6%. Enough for Instagram. Too little for grading HDR video.

There is neither True Tone nor an ambient light sensor, so the picture does not adapt to the lighting of the room by itself. The glass also throws reflections back: Bloomberg finds the laptop tiresome to use next to a sunny window, while The Verge considers it bright enough outdoors as long as the sun is not beating straight on the panel.

Refresh rate of 60 Hz, obviously. The MacBook Neo drives a single external monitor, at 4K and 60 Hz at most.

Performance: the A18 Pro keeps up, the 8 GB much less so

The A18 Pro has six processing cores, two fast and four frugal, a five-core graphics unit and a sixteen-core neural engine. Apple says it is up to 50% faster than a PC with an Intel Core Ultra 5 in everyday use. A press-release figure.

What the published benchmarks say

In Geekbench 6, Tom’s Guide gets 3,535 points on one core and 8,920 across all of them; Mac4ever hovers around 3,400 single-core. Each click therefore answers as fast as on a far more expensive Mac, and The Verge places the whole package level with a MacBook Air M1.

Once the load drags on, the pecking order returns. Converting a twelve-minute 4K video to 1080p in Handbrake takes 9 min 57 s at Tom’s Guide, roughly twice as long as an Air M5 needs. The SSD tops out near 1,700 MB/s in reads according to Mac4ever, and the case stays lukewarm despite having no fan.

Eight gigabytes, the real ceiling

A Mac4ever journalist handed the MacBook Neo a complete working day, with Mail, Slack, WhatsApp, Telegram, Apple Music and around fifteen Safari tabs. Memory in use swung between 6 and 7 GB. He reports slight hesitations, then apps that had to be closed to keep a video call smooth.

So it copes. Today.

The trouble lies ahead. macOS asks for more memory with every release and on-device artificial intelligence devours it. In three or four years, those 8 GB will slow the machine down long before the chip does.

Can you game on the MacBook Neo?

Yes, provided you choose your titles. YouTuber Andrew Tsai tried ten games, a tally picked up by TechRadar: Resident Evil 2 reaches 60 frames per second at 1080p, Control gets close to 50 on low settings, Minecraft goes past 200. Cyberpunk 2077 becomes more or less playable at 720p with everything on minimum.

Windows games launched through CrossOver are a different story. Counter-Strike 2 crawls at 5 frames per second and Resident Evil Requiem at 15, with memory full almost at once. If gaming really matters to you, a handheld console like the Steam Deck OLED will do better for less money.

Keyboard, trackpad and ports: where Apple counted its pennies

This is the savings chapter, and you can feel them. The Magic Keyboard has no backlight on either version. In a darkened lecture hall, or on an evening when the power is out, you will type by the glow of the screen.

Touch ID is missing from the €799 model, which means typing the password at every wake-up and every purchase. The fingerprint sensor only comes with 512 GB.

The trackpad is mechanical: it physically travels down instead of faking the click with a vibration. Mac4ever still rates it the best mechanical pad on the market.

Two USB-C ports that are not equals

Here is the most irritating flaw of the MacBook Neo. The two sockets look alike, yet one runs at USB 3 speed, 10 Gbit/s with DisplayPort video output, and the other at USB 2, 480 Mbit/s, a standard a quarter of a century old. Plug an external SSD into the wrong side and copying a big film will take long minutes.

  • Both ports take a charge, but there is no MagSafe: catch the cable with your foot and the computer follows.
  • No Thunderbolt, so no high-speed dock and no external graphics enclosure.
  • A 3.5 mm headphone jack is there; an SD card reader and HDMI are not.
  • Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6 on the wireless side, with no cellular option.

For video calls, the FaceTime HD camera records in 1080p with two directional microphones. The two side-firing speakers produce a surprisingly wide soundstage according to Mac4ever, with treble that can turn harsh.

MacBook Neo battery life: one day of lectures, not two

Apple quotes up to 16 hours of video streaming and 11 hours of web browsing. Automated tests are flattering: 15 h 35 at PCMag, 13 h 57 of 4K video at Mac4ever, 13 h 28 in the Tom’s Guide browsing test at 150 nits. The Fnac lab, with a harsher protocol, stops at 10 h 22.

In real use with the brightness pushed up, count on less. Mac4ever’s typical day, split between office work, video calls and half an hour of gaming, drained the battery in about seven hours; the site reckons on eight to nine hours of pure office work with the screen dimmed.

A day at university without a charger is realistic. A Paris to Douala round trip without a socket is not.

Slow charging, but from any USB-C brick

With a 30 W adapter, The Verge needed 45 to 50 minutes to reach 50%, and Mac4ever counts two hours for a full refill. That is not fast. The advantage is elsewhere: the MacBook Neo is content with 20 W, in other words a recent phone charger or a USB-C power bank.

Good to know: no power adapter is supplied in France, only a 1.5 m USB-C cable. If you live with regular power cuts, a 20,000 mAh power bank delivering 20 W or more gives back roughly one full charge. Few Windows laptops can say the same.

Software: macOS 27 installs, the AI mostly runs on servers

Shipped with macOS Tahoe, the MacBook Neo accepts macOS 27 Golden Gate, released on 14 September 2026. That version drops Intel Macs and brings Siri AI, on-screen content analysis and a Safari that groups tabs by theme.

Compatibility is complete; the nuance concerns memory. According to Hipertextual, Apple requires 12 GB to run its large language model locally; with 8 GB, part of the requests would go to the company’s servers, with slower answers and a connection required. Apple has not spelled this point out.

In France, Siri AI is said to work on the Mac but in English only for now, according to several specialist sites.

Pages, Numbers, Keynote and iMovie come preinstalled and free. Paired with an iPhone, the MacBook Neo mirrors the phone’s screen and shares its clipboard.

On how long updates will last, Apple commits to nothing. The brand generally supports its Macs for six to seven years, but memory could cut that period short for the hungriest features.

What is the MacBook Neo built for?

Office work and studies: the MacBook Neo for students, on home ground

Word processing, spreadsheets, video calls, annotated PDFs, Netflix in the evening. All of that flies, and CNET even had Google Docs, Chrome tabs, ChatGPT and iMovie open side by side without a hitch. For a student in law, literature or management, the MacBook Neo does the job for an entire bachelor’s degree.

Video editing and creative work: in moderation

A 1080p edit for TikTok or YouTube in iMovie or CapCut, yes, as long as you close everything else. A multitrack 4K project in Final Cut or DaVinci Resolve, no: memory fills up and exports go on forever.

Development: for learning, less for earning a living

Python, JavaScript, VS Code and a terminal: no worries, the MacBook Neo is even a good machine for a coding school. Things go downhill with Docker, virtual machines or Android Studio, all greedy for memory. A professional developer will aim for 16 GB, and so for an Air.

MacBook Neo price and availability in France and in West and Central Africa

At Apple France, prices have not moved since the increase of 25 June:

  • 256 GB, without Touch ID: €799 (about 524,000 FCFA);
  • 512 GB, with Touch ID: €899 (about 590,000 FCFA).

Both versions keep 8 GB of memory, with no option. At full price, take the 512 GB: one hundred euros to double the storage and gain the fingerprint reader is the best-value upgrade in the Mac catalogue.

Prices seen at retailers

Hardly anyone pays €799 for the MacBook Neo. Carrefour offered it at €649 (about 426,000 FCFA) in August, Amazon at €699 (about 459,000 FCFA) at the end of August, and E.Leclerc listed the 512 GB version at €719 (about 472,000 FCFA). Apple’s Refurb Store has sold the refurbished model for €679 (about 445,000 FCFA) since July, and for €759 (about 498,000 FCFA) with 512 GB.

In Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal

Apple runs no shop of its own in French-speaking Africa, and we found no reliable public price in Douala, Abidjan or Dakar at the time of writing. The MacBook Neo gets there through authorised resellers and, above all, through imports: a relative’s suitcase, a freight forwarder or a shop that orders from Europe, each adding a margin of its own. Buying in France and claiming the VAT refund at the airport is often the cheapest route.

Before paying, check the keyboard layout (French AZERTY, or QWERTY if the unit comes from the United States or Dubai), the invoice, and whether an Apple authorised service centre exists in your country: a one-year warranty is worthless if nobody can honour it locally. No SIM card or eSIM here, so the computer will depend on Wi-Fi or on your phone’s hotspot.

Pros and cons

Strong points

  • Aluminium build and total silence, both rare at this price.
  • Bright display, well calibrated in sRGB.
  • Responsive A18 Pro chip on day-to-day tasks.
  • A day of endurance, and it can be topped up from a power bank.
  • Screwed-in battery and accessible parts, a first at Apple in a long while.

Weak points

  • 8 GB of soldered memory, with no higher configuration.
  • One USB 2 port out of two, neither MagSafe nor Thunderbolt.
  • Keyboard without backlight, Touch ID restricted to the 512 GB model.
  • Neither True Tone nor a light sensor, pronounced reflections.
  • A €100 rise in June and no charger in the box.

MacBook Neo or MacBook Air M5: is the €600 gap justified?

Its only direct rival wears the same logo. At €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA), the Air M5 offers twice the memory and storage, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe, a backlit keyboard with Touch ID, Wi-Fi 7 and a chip twice as fast in multi-core work. If you keep your computers for six or seven years, the difference pays for itself. The two other suggestions, the ROG Xbox Ally X and the Steam Deck OLED, are handheld gaming PCs: no good as work tools, but they run the games the Mac refuses.

Conclusion: should you buy the MacBook Neo in October 2026?

Yes, if you know what you are buying. At €650 or €700 on promotion, no Windows laptop brings together this build, this screen and this stamina. At €799 the deal is less obvious, and the 512 GB version becomes the smarter sum.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman mentions a second-generation Neo for the first half of 2027, with the A19 Pro chip from the iPhone 17 Pro and 12 GB of memory. Le Journal du Geek fears a starting price between €899 and €1,000. Nothing official. If you need a computer for this academic year, don’t wait for a rumour.

Our pick

MacBook Neo 512 GB: the better balanced of the two models thanks to Touch ID and doubled storage, for students and first-time Mac buyers, to be bought at around €720 to €800 (about 472,000 to 524,000 FCFA) on promotion instead of €899.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the MacBook Neo cost in France?

Apple sells it for €799 (about 524,000 FCFA) with 256 GB of storage and €899 (about 590,000 FCFA) with 512 GB and Touch ID. Those prices date from 25 June 2026: at launch, both versions cost €100 less. At retailers, the base model was spotted between €649 and €719 over the summer. Apple’s own refurbished units start at €679.

Are the MacBook Neo’s 8 GB of memory enough?

For office work, the web, video calls and streaming, yes. Published reviews show a fluid machine with ten or so apps open, despite small hesitations when memory fills up. For 4K editing, virtual machines or Docker, it is too tight. Since the memory is soldered, no upgrade is possible: if you have doubts about your needs four years from now, look at a 16 GB model.

Does the MacBook Neo come with a charger?

Not in France: the box holds the computer and a 1.5 m USB-C cable, with no power adapter. The laptop accepts any USB-C brick of at least 20 W, including the one from a recent smartphone, and charges through either of its two ports. With 30 W, allow about two hours for a full charge, according to Mac4ever. A USB-C power bank also does the trick on the move.

Should you wait for the 12 GB MacBook Neo 2?

Bloomberg reports a second generation for the first half of 2027, with an A19 Pro chip and 12 GB of memory. Apple has confirmed nothing, and several observers expect a higher starting price, with the 256 GB version possibly disappearing. If you need a computer now, the current model on promotion remains a good buy. If nothing is urgent, waiting makes sense.

Apple lists the full specifications of the MacBook Neo on its French site. Still undecided? Read our MacBook Air M5 profile.
