The MacBook Air M5 has been on sale since 11 March 2026 and now costs €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA) in its 13-inch size, €200 more than at launch. For that money Apple supplies 16 GB of memory, 512 GB of storage, Wi-Fi 7 and a chip that gets through a desktop tower’s workload without a single fan. Published reviews describe a long-lasting, silent machine, almost boring in how dependable it is. Nine buyers out of ten will be happy with it, provided they accept a panel still stuck at 60 Hz and a charger sold separately.
Introduction: Apple’s default laptop, caught out by the cost of memory
Apple unveiled the MacBook Air M5 on 3 March 2026 with a plain press release. Pre-orders the next day, deliveries on the 11th. No stage, no glossy film. The pitch fitted on one line: same body, same €1,199 price (about 786,000 FCFA), but an M5 chip in place of the M4 and base storage doubled from 256 to 512 GB.
The bargain held for three and a half months. On 25 June, the company put up prices on nearly every Mac, pointing to the cost of memory chips, a runaway market we covered in our article on the RAM shortage. The 13-inch gained €200 overnight. So did the 15-inch, now €1,699 (about 1,114,000 FCFA).
Meanwhile the range shifted at the bottom. The MacBook Neo, listed at €799 (about 524,000 FCFA), has become the way in, with an iPhone chip and 8 GB of memory. The MacBook Air M5 is therefore no longer the affordable Mac. It is the middle child, and the 9 September keynote changed nothing there: Apple talked phones that day, and left computers alone.
Verdict at a glance: what we make of the MacBook Air M5
No unit has come through our office. The assessment below rests on the specifications Apple has published and on reviews by Mac4Ever, Les Numériques, Tom’s Guide, Tom’s Hardware, Macworld, Six Colors and Que Choisir.
Verdict in 30 seconds
The MacBook Air M5 is still the easiest laptop to recommend in 2026: fast, mute, long-lasting and properly equipped from the base model up. Its 60 Hz screen and 2022 chassis are starting to show their age, and the June increase has eaten into its value for money.
For whom University students, freelancers, employees who work on the move and occasional creators who want a machine to keep for several years.
Avoid if You edit 4K video every day, you game a lot or you already own a MacBook Air M3 or M4.

Some rows of that sheet deserve a second look. The starting 512 GB, for one: the previous model made you pay extra to avoid running out of room within a year. The 53.8 Wh battery is another, unchanged. And the weight. At 1.23 kg, the MacBook Air M5 slips into a bag between two ring binders and you forget it is there.
MacBook Air M5 design: four years untouched, and it still works
Put it next to a 2022 Air M2 and you will not find a difference. Same flat-edged aluminium shell, same 1.13 cm thickness, same notch at the top of the screen to house the camera. Macworld counts this among its complaints, and the irritation is understandable. Four generations in one suit is a long time.
The suit still fits, mind you. The 30.41 by 21.5 cm footprint sits as happily on a train tray table as on a lecture-hall desk. Four finishes to choose from: sky blue, silver, starlight and midnight.
Having no fan has one consequence that rarely gets a mention. With no air being drawn in, dust stays out of the machine. On a desk in Douala in the dry season, or during the harmattan in Ouagadougou, that is a real plus for longevity. The MacBook Air M5 carries no rating against water or sand all the same.
MacBook Air M5 15-inch or 13-inch: which one to carry every day?
The big model measures 15.3 inches, weighs 1.51 kg and costs €300 more. It gets the 10-core graphics variant of the chip as standard, and six speakers where the small one has four. Bigger battery (66.5 Wh), identical claimed endurance. Parked on a desk with no external monitor, it is easier on the eyes. Lugged around daily on a motorbike taxi or a commuter train, it is 280 grams too heavy, and the 13-inch keeps our preference.
Display: an accurate, bright panel locked at 60 Hz
This is where the MacBook Air M5 shows its age. The 13.6-inch IPS panel displays 2,560 x 1,664 pixels, covers the P3 colour space and adjusts its colour temperature with True Tone. Nothing has changed since 2022.
The measurements remain flattering. Les Numériques, quoted by Mac4Ever, records a peak of 515 cd/m² and an average colour deviation of 1.4, which means colours come out right with no tweaking.
Two things grate. The refresh rate, frozen at 60 Hz when every iPhone Pro has scrolled at 120 for years. And the reflections: the Les Numériques lab measures a reflectance of 55.6%, a high figure. On a café terrace with the sun behind you, the screen of the MacBook Air M5 mostly shows your shirt.
Performance: a nimble M5 chip that tires on long hauls
The M5 lines up ten processing cores, four fast and six frugal, backed by eight graphics cores on the base 13-inch. Tom’s Hardware records 4,168 points single-core and 17,067 multi-core in Geekbench 6. Mac4Ever obtains 17,276 points, against 14,921 for an Air M4.
In plain terms: a gain of 11 to 16% depending on the outlet, and only 7% according to Les Numériques across its panel of applications. Nobody will feel that when opening a spreadsheet. Graphics improve more, by about 31% at Six Colors. Coming from an M1, the jump is of another order: the same site measures 75% better on a single core.
An SSD that doubles the stakes
The change you notice most on the MacBook Air M5 is hidden in the storage. Tom’s Guide measures roughly 6,700 MB/s in reads and 6,500 MB/s in writes on the 15-inch, double the outgoing model. Copying 30 GB of rushes or opening a ten-year photo library goes faster. A quick drive also helps when the 16 GB overflow and the system writes temporarily to the SSD.
Without a fan, the heat eventually sends its bill
Silence has a cost. During a Cinebench 2026 endurance run, Tom’s Hardware watched the score fall from 3,415 points to a little over 2,300 once the chip was hot, a third of the power gone. The shell then climbs to about 42 °C underneath and nearly 41 °C in the middle of the keyboard. Warm, never scorching.
And for gaming?
Let’s be frank: the MacBook Air M5 is no gaming machine. Tom’s Guide gets 27 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 and 19 in Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Too few. Resident Evil 4 Remake reaches 60 frames per second thanks to MetalFX upscaling, and Macworld notes that thermal throttling kicks in after ten minutes of sustained play. For everything else, a handheld like the ROG Xbox Ally X will serve you better and cost less.
Keyboard, trackpad and ports: two sockets and not one more
The backlit Magic Keyboard has not moved, and nobody is complaining. Tom’s Hardware files typing comfort and the trackpad under strengths. That Force Touch pad clicks the same way across its whole surface, and the Touch ID button unlocks the session with one finger. No objections.
Connectivity on the MacBook Air M5 is the stingy part. Two Thunderbolt 4 ports at 40 Gbit/s, a MagSafe 3 charging connector and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. No SD card reader for the photographer, no HDMI for the meeting-room projector, no USB-A for a colleague’s flash drive. A multiport adapter quickly becomes a compulsory companion. One good point even so: two external monitors up to 6K are supported, where the Air M1 and M2 accepted only one.
Wireless moves forward thanks to the Apple-designed N1 chip: Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. For video calls, the 12 MP camera reframes automatically on your face. Three microphones and four speakers complete the set, the latter judged disappointing by Macworld.
MacBook Air M5 battery life: a working day, charger optional
Apple promises up to 18 hours of video and 15 hours of web browsing. For once, the labs are not far off. Tom’s Guide logs 15 h 28 in its browsing protocol with the 13-inch. Macworld passes 18 hours playing a video file, brightness set to 150 nits. Les Numériques, stricter, stops at 13 hours of streaming.
That covers a day of classes or office work, with something left for the evening. And during a six-hour power cut in Yaoundé or Conakry, the MacBook Air M5 keeps running while the rest of the house waits for the electricity to return.
Charging: the cable is there, the wall plug is not
Here is this generation’s nasty surprise in Europe. Open the box and you find the computer and a two-metre USB-C to MagSafe cable. Full stop. Le Journal du Geek ties the decision to the European common-charger rules, extended to laptops at the end of April 2026.
You need an adapter of at least 30 W for the 13-inch, and 70 W to benefit from fast charging. Apple sells its own for €45 (about 30,000 FCFA) at 30 W and €65 (about 43,000 FCFA) at 70 W. Any USB-C Power Delivery brick from a reputable brand will do, often at half the price.
Good to know: both Thunderbolt ports also accept a charge. A USB-C power bank rated at 30 W or more can therefore hand the MacBook Air M5 a few extra hours during an outage or a long bus journey.
Software: macOS 27 Golden Gate, and a Siri AI the European iPhone is denied
Delivered in March with macOS Tahoe, the MacBook Air M5 moves to macOS 27 Golden Gate free of charge, available since 14 September 2026. That release drops Intel-based Macs for good.
The headline act is Siri AI, the new assistant built on a derivative of Gemini according to Consomac. It acts inside applications and turns up in Spotlight. A delicious detail: it works on the Mac in the European Union while it remains blocked on phones, as we explain in our profile of the iPhone 18 Pro.
There is a snag. As of 5 October, Siri AI speaks English only. iPhoneSoft explains how to switch it on from France by setting the system to English, and Apple says French will arrive at the end of October. We will wait and see. According to Applesfera, Macs fitted with 8 GB will only be entitled to a cut-down version. With 16 GB, the MacBook Air M5 is on the right side of the fence. The Neo is not.
Apple makes no commitment on how long support will last. The 2020 MacBook Air M1 is nonetheless getting macOS 27, six years after its release. Think about your software too: Windows only runs in a virtual machine on Apple silicon Macs, and some accounting or CAD tools do not exist on macOS.
What it is good for: office work, studies, editing, development
Office work and studies
This is its territory. Heavy spreadsheets, forty tabs, a video conference and music in the background: the MacBook Air M5 does not flinch, and it stays mute in a university library. Its 16 GB keep you safe for the length of a master’s degree. A law or literature student may hesitate with the Neo. In engineering or architecture school, the Air is the sensible minimum.
Photo and video editing
On the MacBook Air M5, Lightroom, Photoshop or CapCut run comfortably. Tom’s Guide converts a 4K video to 1080p in 4 min 34 s with Handbrake, twenty seconds better than the M4. A creator who posts two short videos a week will be well served. One who edits 4K documentaries will run into the drop in power when hot, and into the 512 GB, which fill quickly.
Development and local AI
For web, mobile or Flutter development, the base configuration is enough, iOS simulator included. Apple claims the M5 handles AI tasks up to four times faster than the M4. You still need room in memory: for local language models or several Docker containers, the 24 GB version earns its surcharge.
MacBook Air M5 price and availability in France and Africa
Since 25 June 2026, Apple France’s official price list, shown on the product page, reads as follows for the most common configurations.
- 13-inch, 16 GB and 512 GB: €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA).
- 13-inch, 24 GB and 1 TB: €1,949 (about 1,278,000 FCFA).
- 15-inch: from €1,699 (about 1,114,000 FCFA).
Nobody is obliged to pay that much for the MacBook Air M5. Retailers never really followed the increase: Clubic flagged the base model at €1,199 on Amazon in late July, and Consomac found it at €1,249 (about 819,000 FCFA) at Darty and Fnac in early September. Our advice: do not go above €1,250 for the entry model, because the promotions keep coming back.

In West and Central Africa: imports, keyboard and warranty
Apple operates no store under its own name in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. There, the MacBook Air M5 is bought from authorised resellers, where any exist, or from importers who add shipping, customs and their margin. Expect to pay noticeably more than the converted French price, and demand an invoice. Before settling up, look at the keyboard layout (AZERTY on a French model, QWERTY on a unit that came from Dubai or the United States) and enter the serial number on Apple’s support site. The one-year manufacturer warranty in principle follows Mac laptops from one country to another, but it can only be exercised at an authorised service centre, a rare thing in the sub-region. Having a relative bring one back from France often remains the cheapest solution.
Pros and cons
Pros
- A base configuration that is generous at last: 16 GB of memory, 512 GB of storage.
- Full-day endurance confirmed by several labs.
- Complete silence and little sensitivity to dust, for want of a fan.
- SSD above 6,000 MB/s, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
- Siri AI usable on the Mac in Europe, and long software support from Apple.
Cons
- 60 Hz screen without HDR, with marked reflections.
- No power adapter in the box in France.
- Power down by about a third on prolonged computation.
- Just two ports, neither HDMI nor a card reader.
- Soldered memory and storage, with expensive upgrades.
Alternatives to the MacBook Air M5
Valve Steam Deck OLED
The closest competitor to the MacBook Air M5 comes from the same stable. The Neo costs €600 less and is enough for writing, browsing and attending classes. At the other end, the 14-inch MacBook Pro M5, at €2,199 (about 1,442,000 FCFA), adds a fan, a 120 Hz mini-LED screen and an HDMI port. And if the leisure budget goes to video games first, a Steam Deck OLED alongside a more modest computer makes more sense.
Conclusion: should you buy the MacBook Air M5?
Yes, in most cases. The MacBook Air M5 does nothing spectacular, and that is precisely what is asked of it: start quickly, last the day, never make itself heard. Its base equipment no longer forces you to tick options, the great flaw of earlier generations.
An Air M3 or M4 owner has no reason to move. From an M1, an 8 GB M2 or an old Intel model deprived of macOS 27, the change will be felt within the first hour. Buy it on promotion, add a 70 W charger, and forget about it until 2031.
Our pick
MacBook Air M5 13-inch, 16 GB and 512 GB: the base configuration, to be picked up for around €1,200 to €1,250 (roughly 786,000 to 820,000 FCFA) from a retailer and not at the official price.
Frequently asked questions
What is the MacBook Air M5 price in France and in FCFA?
The official price of the MacBook Air M5 at Apple France is €1,399 (about 918,000 FCFA) for the 13-inch and €1,699 (about 1,114,000 FCFA) for the 15-inch, since the increase of 25 June 2026. At Amazon, Darty or Fnac, the entry model regularly drops to between €1,199 and €1,249. In French-speaking Africa, budget for more because of shipping and customs.
What are the specs of the base MacBook Air M5?
The entry model carries an Apple M5 chip with 10 processing cores and 8 graphics cores, 16 GB of unified memory and a 512 GB SSD. The Liquid Retina screen measures 13.6 inches, with 2,560 x 1,664 pixels and 500 nits. Add two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3, Wi-Fi 7 and Touch ID. The 53.8 Wh battery is rated for 18 hours of video. Weight: 1.23 kg.
MacBook Air M5 or MacBook Neo: which should you choose?
The Neo, at €799, suits a secondary-school pupil or a student who writes, browses and watches videos, but its 8 GB of memory will limit Siri AI and age quickly. The Air costs €600 more at the official price, €400 to €450 on promotion. It brings double the memory and storage, a backlit keyboard, MagSafe and support for two displays. For four years and beyond, we take the Air.
Is a charger included with the MacBook Air M5?
No, neither in France nor anywhere else in the European Union. All the packaging contains besides the laptop is a two-metre USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. You have to add a USB-C adapter of at least 30 W for the 13-inch, and of 70 W to get fast charging. Apple charges €45 for its 30 W model and €65 for the 70 W one.
