When Google unveiled the Googlebooks, the target was clear: the MacBook. The same price range, the same promise of a simple, light, quiet laptop perfectly linked to its phone. Several outlets saw it as Android’s answer to Apple’s ecosystem. But a promise is not the same as everyday use. Once on your desk, which one is actually more useful?

The full details are in our articles on Googlebook OS and macOS 27 Golden Gate. Here we compare life with each of them, drawing on the first published hands-on reports and on long experience with macOS. Since Googlebooks have only been on sale since 5 October, no lab battery tests are available yet.

8.4/10Our pick

macOS 27 keeps the edge: full professional software, an entry-level Mac cheaper than any Googlebook and perfect integration with the iPhone. Googlebook OS only takes over with an Android phone, where its smartphone integration has no equivalent on the Mac.

For whom macOS 27: iPhone owners, creatives, students and professionals. Googlebook OS: Android users who work mostly in Chrome.

Avoid if Choose a Googlebook instead if you have a recent Android smartphone and all your tools are online.

Two systems that bet on simplicity

This is the most striking common ground. Neither Googlebook OS nor macOS asks you to spend an hour in the settings. No trial software to uninstall, no third-party antivirus, updates that happen in the background. In both cases you open the laptop and get to work.

The difference lies in how it feels. macOS has been consistent for years: Apple’s apps and most third-party software follow the same conventions, and the Liquid Glass interface has been made more legible in version 27. Googlebook OS is younger. Web apps and Chrome are perfectly at home, but some Android apps are still phone apps placed on a big screen, and it shows.

Your phone often decides for you

This is the question to ask before any other. With an iPhone, the Mac offers AirDrop, a shared clipboard, calls and texts from the computer, and picking up a task started on the phone. Everything works without setup. The only downside in France: iPhone Mirroring, which lets you use the phone from the Mac, is still not available in the European Union.

With an Android smartphone running Android 17, the Googlebook takes that role and goes even further: the phone’s files appear in the file manager, its apps open in a laptop window without being installed, and the whole setup carries over at first startup. A Mac offers almost nothing with Android.

Put simply, owning an iPhone and buying a Googlebook, or the reverse, means giving up the main appeal of the machine.

Software: a clear edge for the Mac

On a Mac, Word, Excel and PowerPoint come in their full versions, with macros and add-ins. The same goes for Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere, and for Apple’s own tools such as Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro. Developers get a real Unix system and all their tools.

On a Googlebook, Office runs on the web or through Android apps, and Adobe offers adapted versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and Premiere, but not the desktop versions. Early feedback is positive for everyday use, more reserved as soon as advanced features are needed. The built-in Linux environment helps web developers, without replacing a Mac for building iPhone apps, for example.

Neither runs Windows software. On a Mac, a virtual machine or CrossOver offers a way out. On a Googlebook, there is no official one.

Artificial intelligence: Google is ahead in France

Here the Googlebook scores points. Gemini is built in everywhere, works in French and is used with a simple mouse movement thanks to Magic Pointer. Just bear in mind that everything goes through the cloud, and that keeping Google AI Pro beyond the first year costs €21.99 a month (about 14,400 FCFA).

On the Mac, Siri AI is more powerful on paper, since it acts inside apps and handles some requests on the machine. But when macOS 27 launched, it only spoke English in France, with French announced for October. It also requires an M3 chip and 12GB of memory: the MacBook Neo does not qualify.

Entry price: Apple wins, for once

The MacBook Neo starts at €799 (about 524,000 FCFA), without Siri AI but with the rest of macOS 27. The cheapest Googlebook, the HP Googlebook 14, costs €1,099.99 (about 721,500 FCFA). To get Siri AI you need a MacBook Air M5, whose price matches the high-end Googlebooks.

Over time, Google announces up to 10 years of updates depending on the model. Apple gives no official period, but in practice a Mac receives six to eight years of new macOS versions, followed by security fixes. The gap is smaller than it seems.

Gaming

Neither is a gaming machine. The Mac has a larger native catalogue, more and more recent games are ported to it, and Apple pushes developers with its conversion tools. The Googlebook relies on Android games and cloud gaming, with GeForce NOW still described as “coming” by NVIDIA. For serious gaming, neither replaces a PC running Windows 11.

Our verdict by profile

You have an iPhone

Get a Mac. The MacBook Neo is enough for office work and coursework, the MacBook Air M5 if you want Siri AI and more power.

You have a recent Android smartphone

The Googlebook becomes very attractive, especially if you work in Chrome and Google Workspace. This is its home turf.

Student

The MacBook Neo is cheaper and runs all course software. The Googlebook suits you if everything happens online and you are on Android.

Creative (photo, video, music)

The Mac, without hesitation, for the full versions of the software and Apple’s own tools.

You want the most useful AI assistant in French today

The Googlebook, until Siri AI gets its French version.

Pros and cons

Googlebook OS

  • Pros: Gemini in French everywhere, full integration with Android, Play Store apps, up to 10 years of updates.
  • Cons: lighter versions of pro software, no Googlebook under €1,099, AI dependent on the cloud and on a subscription after a year, continuity features lost with an iPhone.

macOS 27 Golden Gate

  • Pros: full software, a consistent and stable system, perfect integration with the iPhone, entry-level Mac at €799.
  • Cons: Siri AI in English at launch and limited to M3 chips and newer, almost nothing with Android, iPhone Mirroring missing in the EU.
