WhatsApp Web won’t connect: how to fix the ‘Phone not connected’ error
When you try to open WhatsApp Web, you may encounter the message “Phone not connected,” which prevents any synchronization. It is one of the most common issues faced by users, and it can have several causes: unstable connection, phone settings, a browser blocking cookies, or network restrictions. In this article, we explain exactly where this error comes from, based on verifiable sources, and we propose simple and reliable steps to quickly restore the connection between your phone and WhatsApp Web.
Why WhatsApp Web shows “Phone not connected”
1) WhatsApp Web is an extension of the mobile app
WhatsApp Web works as an extension that relies on your phone: if the mobile app does not have an Internet connection or is offline, the Web version cannot synchronize messages.

2) Unstable or missing Internet connection (phone or PC)
The most common case is a weak or interrupted connection on the phone (or, secondarily, on the computer). Official recommendations include: checking the network, turning Wi-Fi or mobile data on and off, and restarting the phone or router.
3) Phone settings: battery saver / background data
If the system (Android or iOS) restricts WhatsApp’s background activity (power management, “data saver,” or automatic app closing), the app may lose its connection and trigger the error on the Web version. We recommend disabling these restrictions for WhatsApp.
4) Browser-related issues: cookies, cache, extensions, or private mode
Corrupted cookies, outdated cache, or a browser extension blocking the site can prevent the session from being established or maintained. Testing in a private/incognito window or clearing cookies and cache often resolves the problem.
5) VPN, firewall, or network filtering (company network / public Wi-Fi)
Some network rules may block the domains required for WhatsApp Web to work. On managed networks, it may be necessary to allow the WhatsApp domain.
6) Linked device limits / server bug
WhatsApp allows a limited number of linked devices, and synchronization issues may sometimes occur on the server side. If there is a widespread service outage, you will need to wait for WhatsApp/Meta to fix it.

Clear and ordered steps to reconnect WhatsApp Web
- Check WhatsApp on your phone: send a test message from your phone. If it fails, fix the issue on the phone first.
- Check Internet (phone + PC): open a web page on each device. If one device has no Internet access, fix the connection (reset Wi-Fi, switch data connection, restart the router).
- Check for service outages: if WhatsApp is experiencing a service outage, no local fix will help check outage reports or the official help page.
- Disable battery saver / background restrictions for WhatsApp: go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Battery (or Data) → allow background activity or disable battery optimization for WhatsApp. This often fixes disconnection issues.
- Check background data permissions / Data Saver: if Data Saver is enabled, allow WhatsApp to use background data.
- Update WhatsApp: install the latest version via the Play Store or App Store. Older versions can cause compatibility issues.
- Refresh the web page (F5) and check the exact message displayed. Sometimes the issue is temporary.
- Log out and reconnect WhatsApp Web: On the web page: open the menu → Log out.On your phone: WhatsApp → Menu → Linked devices → Link a device → scan the QR code. This renews the session.
- Test in private browsing: open an incognito window and go to https://web.whatsapp.com. If it works there, the issue likely comes from your browser’s cache or extensions.
- Clear cookies and cache (if private mode worked): delete cookies or site data for web.whatsapp.com, or choose “Clear browsing data.” Then reload the page and reconnect.
- Disable extensions / VPN / proxy: temporarily disable browser extensions (ad blockers, privacy shields) and/or disable VPN to test. If the network is managed, ask the IT administrator to allow web.whatsapp.com.
- Check firewall / DNS filtering: on Windows, macOS, or your router, firewall rules or custom DNS may block access. Try another network (for example, a mobile hotspot) to isolate the issue. If it still doesn’t work:
- Restart your phone and computer (simple but often effective).
- Remove the linked device and link it again: on your phone, go to Linked devices, remove the session linked to the computer, then reconnect by scanning the QR code again.
- Contact WhatsApp support if none of the previous steps resolve the issue (or if there is a server bug). See the contact/support page on the official website.
