You can’t recover a deleted Telegram account: Telegram’s official FAQ says deletion is final and that no restoration exists. The account is gone either because someone requested its deletion or because it was removed automatically after a period of inactivity. Allow 15 minutes to check its status, sign up again and find what still exists elsewhere.
Common symptoms and causes
- You requested deletion on Telegram’s deactivation page.
- The account was deleted automatically after a period of inactivity, together with all its cloud data (the data stored on Telegram’s servers).
- The login code no longer arrives, or your number is treated as a new account.
- A banned or limited account is a different case, covered in our guide on how to recover a banned Telegram account. For a block caused by content, see how to unblock a Telegram account restricted by content filtering.
Before you start
Keep the phone number of the account at hand, along with the Telegram app or a web browser.
Warning: deleting a Telegram account is irreversible. Chats, contacts and cloud data are lost.
Warning: the page used in Solution 1 is the one that erases an account. If yours still exists, back up your data first and do not confirm any deletion.
Paid recovery services and temporary phone numbers are not reliable.
Solution 1: check that the Telegram account is really deleted
This check goes through the official deletion page. Its login code arrives inside the Telegram app, not by SMS.
Warning: the next step can erase data. Stop as soon as the code arrives: going further on this page deletes the account, its messages and its contacts.
- Open telegram.org/deactivate in a browser, preferably not on your phone.
- Enter your number in international format, with the country code.
- Check whether a code arrives in the Telegram app.
If a code arrives, the account still exists: close the page without going further. No code? That points to a deleted account or one with no active session, but it doesn’t prove it on its own.
Solution 2: sign up for a new Telegram account with the same number
The same number lets you register again, but Telegram then treats you as a new user.
- Open the Telegram app on your phone or computer.
- Enter the number of your old account.
- Complete the sign-up.
You land on a blank account: no history, no contacts, no groups. Contacts who saved your number get a notification that you joined Telegram.

Solution 3: recover what is left of a deleted Telegram account
Deletion wipes your data, not the copies other people hold. The people you wrote to keep the messages you sent them.
- Write to the contacts concerned and ask them to send back the messages you need.
- Ask a member of your former groups, who keeps their own copy of the conversation.
- Ask an administrator what happened to the groups you created: they stay without a creator and their administrators keep their rights.
- Look on your Mac for an old export made with Telegram Lite, if you ever made one.
You only get back what others kept and what you had exported.
Good to know: the official FAQ doesn’t offer an export in the settings, and its pages don’t confirm export from Telegram Desktop.
Solution 4: prevent automatic deletion of your Telegram account
These settings are made on an active account, old or new.
- Open Settings > Privacy and Security.
- Look for the account self-destruct setting: according to third-party guides, it offers 1, 3, 6 or 12 months, which Telegram doesn’t confirm in its FAQ.
- Choose a period longer than any absence you can foresee.
- Open Settings > Privacy and Security > 2-Step Verification.
- Create a password, which is added to the SMS code at login.
- Add a recovery email address if you wish.
- Write to
@EURegulationto request a full copy of the data Telegram keeps (GDPR right). - Export your data and chats with Telegram Lite if you use a Mac.
The period shown should match your choice, and a new login should ask for the SMS code and then the password.
Good to know: the official FAQs disagree on the default period, 18 months in English and Italian against 6 months in French. Trust the period displayed on your own account.
Tip: to erase data without deleting the account, look in Settings > Privacy and Security (Data Settings on iPhone): Telegram lets you delete synced contacts and cloud drafts there. Calls are deleted separately.
If nothing works
Stop searching: no procedure restores a deleted account, and according to the FAQ support can’t do it either. Start again from a new account and turn down any paid recovery offer.
For a login or sign-up question, contact only the official channels: Settings > Ask a question in the app, where volunteers answer, or the form at telegram.org/support. Have your phone number ready.
If the new account can’t message your contacts, see our guide on problems sending messages on Telegram.

Frequently asked questions
Can you recover a deleted Telegram account?
No, deletion can’t be undone. Signing up again, even with the same number, creates a new user with no history, no contacts and no groups. Support can’t restore the account.
What happens to your messages after a Telegram account is deleted?
They disappear from your account, along with your contacts, but not from your correspondents’ accounts. The people you wrote to keep the messages you sent them. Groups and channels you created stay in place without a creator, and their administrators keep their rights.
How long before Telegram deletes an inactive account?
The default period is 18 months according to the English and Italian FAQs, while the French FAQ says 6 months. The period can be changed in the settings. Check the value shown on your account, because it is the only one that matters for you.
How do you change the Telegram account self-destruct period?
The setting is in the account settings, according to the official FAQ, which doesn’t give the exact path. Third-party guides place it under Settings > Privacy and Security, with choices of 1, 3, 6 or 12 months. Telegram doesn’t confirm these labels or periods.
How do you back up your Telegram data before deleting your account?
Write to @EURegulation to request a full copy of the data Telegram holds. The French FAQ also says Telegram Lite for macOS can export your data and chats. Do it before deletion: afterwards, no restoration exists.
