Which one to choose between the Huawei P60 Pro and the Honor Magic 5 Pro?

Officialized in China recently, the Huawei P60 Pro comes with many improvements over its predecessor. It will surely waste no time in becoming one of the best smartphones of this year 2023, be it in terms of design, display, camera, performance or even battery.

For its part, Honor stands out with a new outstanding product: the Magic 5 Pro that was announced last month. Each of these smartphones is sure to blow your mind, but which one is better? By taking a closer look at the two devices, this comparison guide will give you some answers.

Huawei P60 Pro and Honor Magic 5 Pro design

The Magic 5 Pro comes in blue, purple, orange, black and green. Only the last two colors are offered in France. Its dimensions are 162.9 x 76.7 x 8.8 mm with a weight of 219 g. Its design includes a glass front panel as well as a glass or eco-friendly leather back.

Honor’s device is IP68 certified dust and water resistant (up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes). The fingerprint reader is integrated under the slab of the phone. The front panel of the Magic 5 Pro features a large punch located in the upper left corner of the slab and housing two front cameras for selfies.

Huawei’s phone measures 161 x 74.5 x 8.3 mm and it weighs 200 g. It is available in emerald green, black, white and purple colors. It also has IP68 certification and is less long, less wide, less thick and less heavy than its rival.

Display Huawei P60 Pro vs Honor Magic 5 Pro

Huawei’s phone packs a 6.67-inch LTPO OLED display. It is a screen protected by Kunlun glass and offers a resolution of 2,700 x 1,220 pixels at 444 dpi, as well as a refresh rate of 120 Hz.

As for the Magic 5 Pro, it comes with a 6.81-inch display that is based on AMOLED LTPO technology. This HDR10+ screen, offers a Full HD+(1080p) display with a resolution of 1,312 x 2,848 at 460 dpi, an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz and a maximum brightness of 1,800 nits.

The display on both devices is fairly smooth. However, the Magic 5 Pro’s display has a larger size, better resolution and is based on newer technology. So the Magic 5 Pro’s screen is better than the Huawei P60 Pro’s, which makes perfect sense.

Since at the time of writing this article, the screen of the Magic 5 Pro has already been tested by the experts at DXOMARK. Honor’s smartphone was ranked at the top of the list with a score of 151 points for its screen. It is therefore considered the phone that offers the best display in the mobile sector.

The Huawei P 60 Pro is more powerful than the Magic 5 Pro?

The Huawei P60 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 processor coupled with an Adreno 730 GPU, and is offered by its manufacturer in 8GB RAM / 256GB storage and 12GB RAM / 512GB storage models.

The capacity of its internal memory can be expanded via micro SD because the device has a slot for the memory card (hybrid slot, also housing the second SIM)

The P60 Pro runs under an operating system HarmonyOS 3.1 (for models marketed in China) or EMUI (for Europe). It is still necessary to specify that the new product of Huawei does not support 5G. It is limited to 4G and does not inherit the services of Google like the Play Store.

The Magic 5 Pro is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, which is an eight-core processor assisted by an Adreno 740 GPU. It comes in 8GB RAM / 256GB, 12GB RAM/ 256GB, 12GB RAM / 512GB and 16GB RAM / 512GB models.

Only the 12GB RAM + 512GB storage variant will be available in Europe. The memory technology used on the Magic 5 Pro is UFS 4.0. Honor’s smartphone supports 5G and features Android 13 with MagicOS 7.1 interface.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in the Magic 5 Pro is an improved version of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 in the Huawei P60 Pro. In addition, Honor’s device benefits from more RAM than that available on the Huawei P60 Pro.

So, even if the two phones are equivalent in terms of internal storage, it is clear that the Huawei P60 Pro is no match for the Honor Magic 5 Pro in terms of performance.

Camera duel between the Huawei P60 Pro and the Honor Magic 5 Pro

The Huawei P60 Pro’s camera block includes a 48MP main camera, a 13MP ultra-wide angle sensor and a 48MP telephoto lens. For selfies, the front panel of the device houses a 13MP front camera.

The Magic 5 Pro has a 3 camera system on the back with 50 MP each. There is a wide angle sensor playing the role of main camera, an ultra wide angle sensor and a telephoto lens supporting an optical zoom of up to 3.5x. For selfies, the device has a 12 MP front camera associated with a 3D TOF depth sensor.

The Magic 5 Pro is considered as the cell phone that offers the best camera of the moment. Indeed, it was ranked 1st on DXOMARK with a score of 152 points for its camera surpassing the Pixel 7 Pro which is at 147 points in 3rd place or the Huawei P50 which is in 7th place with a score of 143 points.

For its part, the Huawei P60 Pro has not yet been tested on DXOMARK. However, if it comes with improvements compared to its predecessor, then it is clear that it will be rated with a score better than the 143 points. Regardless, the Magic 5 Pro is so far better than the P60 Pro in terms of camera.

Battery and charging

The Magic 5 Pro has a non-removable Li-Po battery. It has a capacity of 5,100 mAh (for the model marketed internationally) or 5,450 mAh for the version available only in China. Honor’s device supports 66W wired fast charging, 50W wireless charging and reverse charging (5W wired and wireless).

The Huawei P60 Pro is equipped with a 4,815 mAh Li-Po battery. It is compatible with 88W wired charging as well as 50W wireless charging.

Price and availability of the Magic 5 Pro and the Huawei P60 Pro

The Huawei P60 Pro was officially presented in China on March 23. Its starting price is set at 6,988 yuan (about €940 excluding VAT) for the 8GB RAM / 256GB version and 7,988 yuan (about €1,075 excluding VAT) for the 12GB RAM / 512GB model. The Huawei P60 Pro will be official in Europe on May 9, 2023.

The Magic 5 Pro was made official on February 27, 2023 at the WMC. For now, it is available in China but a launch is planned in Europe. The Magic 5 Pro has an international starting price of €1,199 (for the 12+512GB variant).

The exact release date of the Magic 5 Pro in Europe has not yet been confirmed by Honor. Nevertheless, you can register on the manufacturer’s website to be informed in real time of the launch of the device in France or in the European zone. As for the Chinese version of the phone, here are the different variants with the corresponding prices:

  • 8 GB / 256 GB: 5 199 yuan (about 700 € HT)
  • 12 GB / 256 GB: 5,699 yuan (about 767 € HT)
  • 16 GB / 512 GB: 6 199 yuan (about € 834 HT)

Verdict Huawei P60 Pro vs Honor Magic 5 Pro

Both devices approach a very attractive design, but that’s not all. The Magic 5 Pro emerges from this comparison as the device with the best display, the best performance, the most powerful battery and the most interesting recharging features. So it has more strengths than its rival.

Moreover, the Honor Magic 5 Pro is priced more affordably than its competitor. For its part, the P60 Pro supports a faster charge than the one compatible with Honor’s phone. So, if you have to choose between the two phones, we’d advise you to go for the Honor Magic 5 Pro, which will soon be available in the European zone.
