iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: with €250 between them, the older model wins for most buyers, and nearly every review published since 18 September points the same way. The new phone holds its peak power for longer, sees a little better at night and lasts a few extra hours away from a socket. Day to day, those are gains you read in measurement tables far more than you feel them in the hand. If a 17 Pro already lives in your pocket, keep it.

Introduction: iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, a duel between twins

Lay them screen-down on a table, in the dark, and feel your way around. You won’t know which is which. That is the whole point of this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro comparison: Apple kept the 2025 body, changed part of what sits inside it, then added €150 to the price tag.

The new model was unveiled at Apple’s 9 September event and started shipping on the 18th; straight afterwards, its elder left Apple’s catalogue and now exists only in retailers’ stockrooms. Each already has its own page on the site: the one for the iPhone 18 Pro breaks down its pricing, while the one for the iPhone 17 Pro says what the phone is worth a year on.

What concerns us in this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro is the choice. What a day looks like with one or the other, what starts to grate after a month, what reassures you when the nearest charger or repair shop is a long way off. The usual caveat applies: neither phone has come through our newsroom. Everything that follows rests on Apple’s own data, on reviews from Clubic, Mac4ever, Phonandroid, The Verge and the test lab of the French retailer Fnac, and on user feedback relayed by the press.

Verdict in brief: iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro in thirty seconds

Our ruling is quick to sum up: the better phone of the two is not the better buy. The scores come straight from our product pages: 8.1 for the newcomer, 8.6 for the older model, lifted by its price cut.

Design: five grams, two shades and the same cases

Seven in the morning, one hand gripping the rail on the bus, the other unlocking the phone with a thumb. In that moment the two iPhones behave in exactly the same way, and for good reason: the 6.3-inch frame has not shifted by a tenth of a millimetre. It is one of the last high-end phones you can work one-handed without giving it a thought. On the back of a motorbike taxi, that argument carries weight.

In this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro match-up, you have to get the scales out to find a gap. The new phone comes in at 211 g, five more than its elder, because the camera unit has thickened to make room for the diaphragm. Five grams: the weight of an ordinary sheet of A4 paper.

Good news, spotted by Clubic: last year’s cases fit the 2026 model. Bad news for the ego, nobody will see that you have changed phones, unless you go for burgundy or glacier, the two new shades.

That leaves wear and tear. When it came out, the 17 Pro got people talking because of marks along the edges of its camera bar, mostly on the Deep Blue version. A year later, an iPhoneSoft writer who carried his without a case describes it as almost intact, which is one person’s account and in no way a measurement. On the 18 Pro, Mac4ever saw the new coating on the back pick up marks within the first few days.

Advantage 17 Pro, by a whisker. Lighter, better known, and the only one of the pair to wear a colour people recognise from a distance. Materials and exact dimensions are listed on our iPhone 17 Pro product page.

Display in full sun, where the twins part company

On paper, the iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro billing gives us nothing to separate: same OLED panel, same 120 Hz smoothness, same claimed peak of 3,000 nits outdoors. In a bedroom, an office or a train carriage you will not see any difference, and Fnac’s lab had already handed the 17 Pro’s screen its top mark.

Two details do change everyday life, though. The first is plain to see: the 18 Pro’s Dynamic Island has shrunk by roughly a quarter and now holds three Live Activities, one more than before. According to The Verge, the space that frees up is barely noticeable once the phone is in your hand. We have no trouble believing it.

The second appears in no advert. Mac4ever found that the new model’s panel loses a great deal of brightness after a few minutes once the surrounding air climbs past 30 °C, falling back to somewhere around 300 to 400 nits. In Paris in October, you will never notice. On a building site in Yaoundé in the early afternoon, it is a different story: to read a message or frame a photo, you will have to go looking for shade.

Nothing proves the 17 Pro is spared: none of the reviews we consulted measured it under the same conditions. Caution is in order.

This round of iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro ends level. If the screen is your number one criterion, do not pay €250 for it.

Performance: thirty minutes of gaming is enough to tell them apart

Open WhatsApp, Maps, the camera, an 80-page PDF. Neither phone flinches, and you would need a stopwatch to tell one from the other. Fnac’s lab had awarded the A19 Pro 10 out of 10 in every one of its scenarios.

The gap exists, and it has even been put into numbers. Gizmodo records 4,027 points in Geekbench’s single-core test for the A20 Pro against 3,258 for the chip before it, and 9to5Mac places the gain on the processor side at between 22 and 27%.

It is over the long haul that you feel it. Run a demanding game for half an hour, or export a 4K video: the 18 Pro’s vapour chamber, three times larger, ought to keep the chip cool for longer. Engadget, Gizmodo and Clubic all confirm that heat is carried away more effectively. Phonandroid still measures 45 °C on the back and notes that the small Pro throttles its power in games. Mac4ever is a good deal harsher, describing a phone that shut itself down more than ten times to cool off during three hours of filming, admittedly on a burgundy Pro Max.

Faster, then, but not immune to a hot spell. The older phone was given a vapour chamber of its own in 2025, and both Wired and Fnac praised the way it held up during long sessions.

The power round of this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro goes to the 18 Pro, and the figures leave no room for argument. For anyone who games seriously or edits video on the phone itself, that headroom means something. For messaging, it lies dormant. The full set of measurements is in the iPhone 18 Pro spec sheet.

Night photos and video: iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro at a concert

Saturday night, a packed venue, you are at the back and the stage is forty metres away. On the telephoto lens, disappointment: the two share the same 48 MP 4x zoom, and CNET had already observed on the 17 Pro that the 8x crop fills up with noise as soon as the light drops. From a distance and in the dark, it is a draw. Not a glorious one.

On the main sensor, the newcomer takes back control. Its aperture opens as wide as f/1.48 when the older phone’s stays fixed at f/1.78. Clubic puts the extra light at about 50% and notes a Night mode that kicks in less often, which means fewer blurred faces when your friends are moving about. Mac4ever, The Verge and Gizmodo temper the enthusiasm: outside dark scenes, the difference stays slim.

The most useful new feature at a concert is hidden in the Pro controls of the Camera app. By setting the shutter speed yourself, you can get rid of the dark bands that LED walls print across so many stage videos.

It is not all rosy. Phonandroid criticises the 18 Pro for hesitant focusing at night and for reflections when it faces street lamps. Apple also had to release iOS 27.0.1 on 28 September to fix, among other things, a colour fault on some photos taken at 2x zoom, according to iPhoneSoft.

Camera in hand, the two are equally equipped: 4K Dolby Vision at 120 frames per second and ProRes RAW on both sides. The new model adds control over the aperture, including from Final Cut Camera.

A win for the 18 Pro, the clearest of this entire iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, but a specialist’s win. Your WhatsApp contacts will not be able to tell apart two wedding photos taken with one or the other.

Good to know — The 18 Pro’s diaphragm is a mechanical part, with real blades. Nothing suggests it is fragile, but far from an Apple authorised service centre, in Douala or Bamako for example, a camera unit for the 17 Pro will be easier to find at repair shops for many months to come.

Battery: Douala to Yaoundé and back, with the charger left at home

Picture a return trip from Douala to Yaoundé by bus. You leave at six in the morning, then it is GPS, music, a few calls, an hour of video on the way back, and the power has gone out at home by the time you walk in. At 10 pm, both phones still show some battery, if the reviews are to be believed.

illustration-recharge-7 iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: which one should you buy in late 2026?

On the 17 Pro, Tom’s Guide recorded 15 hours 32 minutes of uninterrupted web browsing: a proper day, free of anxiety. The 18 Pro does better. Clubic and 9to5Mac talk about a day and a half, and Journal du Geek, which compiled the first reviews, concludes that around 40% would be left in the evening after five hours of screen time. The gap owes less to the battery, almost unchanged on the European version, than to the chip being built on a finer process.

For charging, read the small print. The new phone promises half a charge in a quarter of an hour, the old one in twenty minutes. Phonandroid times it at 61 minutes to reach 100%, where Fnac recorded about an hour and a half on the 17 Pro. Half an hour gained: that matters when the electricity only comes back for an hour.

Two reservations. You need an adapter of at least 60 W, which is not in the box, and Mac4ever warns that when the phone is hot, the first half takes more like 20 to 25 minutes.

The 18 Pro wins this round. It is even the advantage you will feel most often in this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, well ahead of the camera.

Software, network and Siri AI: a tie, frustration included

Here, the iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro duel is over quickly. Both run iOS 27, with the same Apple Intelligence tools. Both go without Siri AI for as long as they are tied to the European Union, with Apple sheltering behind the EU’s Digital Markets Act and offering no date. Buying the latest model in France for its assistant would be a €1,479 mistake.

Outside Europe, the picture could be different. Siri AI is due to learn French with iOS 27.2: a reader living in Abidjan or Libreville, with a local Apple account, should be able to use it on either phone. That will need checking in each country on the day of release.

On the network side, the 18 Pro is the first to carry the C2 modem designed by Apple, whereas the 17 Pro relies on a Qualcomm chip. Mac4ever saw neither reception nor speeds change. So much the better. A Qualcomm modem does, all the same, have years of service behind it with African carriers, while Apple’s has only been judged, in the reviews we read, on European and American networks.

Another iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro draw.

Price: what the iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro match really costs

Price tags first. Expect to pay €1,479 (about 970,000 FCFA) for a 256 GB 18 Pro on Apple’s French website. The 17 Pro, launched at €1,329, is listed at €1,229 (about 806,000 FCFA) at the French retailers Fnac, Darty and Cdiscount, according to the survey Consomac ran in early October. The gap: €250, or about 164,000 FCFA.

That gap moves, and mostly in the right direction. Amazon offered the older model at €1,129 in August according to LesMobiles, and Consomac was still flagging the orange version at €1,189 in late September. Refurbished, the price tracker RefurbMe has it starting at €982 (about 644,000 FCFA).

One trap to avoid: the 512 GB version. The 17 Pro’s is listed at €1,479 by retailers, the exact price of a 256 GB 18 Pro. At that level, take the new one.

For anyone who already owns a 17 Pro, the sums turn frankly bad. Between the depreciation and the price of a new phone, the swap costs several hundred euros for a diaphragm and a few hours of stamina. In an iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, it is the only question on which everyone agrees: 9to5Mac, Clubic and Phonandroid all advise sitting this one out.

The 17 Pro takes this round hands down.

Good to know — Settling an iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro from Douala or Abidjan calls for one more precaution, because Apple runs no shop under its own name in French-speaking Africa. In Abidjan, Djokstore was listing the 256 GB 18 Pro at 1,165,900 FCFA in early October, out of stock; for the 17 Pro, no reliable shop price could be found in Cameroon. In both cases, check where the phone comes from: US versions have no SIM tray and work with eSIM only, and the warranty may be limited to the country of purchase.

Where to buy the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro at the best price

The last stop in this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro is the checkout. The new phone sells at the same price everywhere, so the extras make the difference; in late September, Consomac noted store-credit offers at Fnac and Darty. For the old one, compare properly. Frequently asked questions

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: what are the real differences?

Four points separate the two models. The 18 Pro’s main sensor has a variable aperture running from f/1.48 to f/4, against a fixed aperture on the 17 Pro. Its A20 Pro chip is 22 to 27% faster on the processor side according to 9to5Mac. Its claimed battery life rises from 31 to 34 hours of video playback, and its Dynamic Island shrinks by a quarter. Frame, panel, telephoto and front camera are identical.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: should you switch if you already have the 17 Pro?

No, unless you have a professional need. The reviewers at Clubic, Phonandroid, Mac4ever and 9to5Mac all advise against this upgrade. You would keep the same screen and the same body, and gain a variable aperture that is mostly useful in manual mode, slightly faster charging and a few hours of stamina. In this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, the move costs several hundred euros.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: which one copes better with heat?

On this side of the iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro debate, opinions differ. The 18 Pro has a vapour chamber three times larger, and Clubic, Engadget and Gizmodo describe heat that is well dissipated. Mac4ever, by contrast, reports safety shutdowns during long shoots and a screen that dims above 30 °C. The 17 Pro was praised by Wired and Fnac for how it held up in games. In a tropical climate, look for shade with both.

iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro: which one to buy for Cameroon or Côte d’Ivoire?

The 17 Pro starts with two assets: a lower price and a Qualcomm modem proven over many years, whereas the 18 Pro’s C2 modem still lacks a track record with local carriers. In both cases, favour a European version with a nano-SIM tray and eSIM, turn down eSIM-only US models if your carrier does not offer eSIM, and insist on an invoice.

This comparison will be updated if prices move. Until then, tell us in the comments which way you are leaning in this iPhone 18 Pro vs iPhone 17 Pro, and have a look at our iPhone 17 Pro Max versus Galaxy S26 Ultra head-to-head if bigger phones tempt you.
