OBS Studio, short for Open Broadcaster Software, is developed in the open by a community of volunteers. Most streamers use it, and so do many teachers and creators who record tutorials.

What OBS Studio is for

You build scenes: the whole screen or a single window, the webcam, a microphone, an image, a title. You switch between scenes while recording or streaming. OBS can use the graphics card’s encoder (NVIDIA, AMD, Intel or Apple) to take the load off the processor.

Who is it for?

Anyone who wants to record their screen with no watermark or time limit, go live on Twitch or YouTube, or bring a polished setup into a video call through the virtual camera.

The only official source is obsproject.com, which also links to the Steam version and the Linux packages. OBS is free: a page that charges for it or asks for an “activator” has nothing to do with the project.

Our opinion

We like

  • Free with no watermark, even in high definition
  • Scenes and sources you arrange freely: screen, webcam, images, text
  • Streams straight to Twitch, YouTube and most platforms
  • Virtual camera for Zoom, Teams or Meet

We like less

  • Takes longer to learn than consumer tools
  • Needs a decent machine to encode live
