Your Samsung TV won’t turn on: start with the red standby light, because it tells you where to look. If it is off, check the outlet, the cord or the power supply; if it stays solid, suspect the remote and its batteries; if it blinks, Samsung points to a probable fault in the TV itself.

Run the first test right now: unplug the TV for 30 seconds.

Common symptoms and causes of a Samsung TV that won’t turn on

  • Solid red light: the TV has power and sits in standby. Go to Solution 2.
  • No light: the TV gets no power, or it is on with a black screen. Start with Solution 1, then Solution 3.
  • Blinking red light: Samsung reports a probable TV fault. There is no official code, so counting the blinks does not point to any part.
  • Black screen with sound: wrong source, HDMI link or energy saving. Go to Solutions 3 and 4.

Good to know: on models with a One Connect box (Q7, Q9 from 2018, The Frame), the connections run through a separate box. Check its power too, not just the TV’s.

Before you start

Write down the model and serial number printed on the label at the back of the TV. Check whether your model uses a One Connect box.

Tip: photograph the label with your phone. The model and serial number will be at hand if you have to call Samsung Support.

Warning: do not open the TV. Unplug the unit from the mains before any opening and never work on a plugged-in device. Capacitors in some appliances, TVs included, stay charged after unplugging: do not touch them.

Warning: do not use a damaged cord or one with bare wires. Have your surge protectors (the power strips that guard against voltage spikes) checked by an electrician.

Warning: opening the TV may void the warranty. Check the warranty end date before doing anything.

Warning: a factory reset erases channels, clocks, timers and settings. Note what you want to keep before starting one. No solution in this guide asks for it.

Solution 1: no light, check the outlet and the power supply

  1. Unplug the TV from the outlet.
  2. Unplug the One Connect box too if your model has one.
  3. Inspect the power cord: if it is visibly damaged, do not plug it back in.
  4. Wait 30 seconds.
  5. Test the wall outlet with another device.
  6. Reconnect the Invisible Connection cable between the TV and the One Connect box, on the models that have one.
  7. Plug the TV, and the One Connect box if there is one, straight into a working wall outlet, with no extension cord, power strip or surge protector.

The red standby light should come on. If it works on another outlet, the original outlet or the surge protector is at fault: the protector may be worn out.

If your surge protector is worn, here is a reliable surge-protected power strip to replace it.

The outlet test starts with a 30-second unplug.

Solution 2: solid red light, turn it on without the remote

  1. Find the physical button on the TV: its position depends on the model, and the manual shows it.
  2. Press that button, or the Power touch pad under the light.
  3. Replace the remote’s batteries, matching the polarity.
  4. Point the Smart Remote at the TV.
  5. Hold Back and Play/Pause for at least 3 seconds to pair it again.
  6. Look at the front of the remote through your phone’s camera while pressing a key.

The TV should turn on with its own button, and a light should show on the phone screen. If the button works, the remote is the suspect; if the camera shows no light, replace the remote. Our guide to a TV remote that no longer works covers these checks in detail.

Tip: run the camera test in a dark room, where the light shows up better.

The light stays solid and nothing reacts? Samsung’s Swiss page gives two moves: unplug the TV and wait several minutes, or hold the power button for 10 seconds. That duration appears only on that page.

If only turning the TV on remotely is the problem, see Smart TV that won’t turn on through SmartThings.

Solution 3: black screen, check the source and the HDMI cable

  1. Press Home or Menu on the remote: a visible menu means the wrong source or no signal.
  2. Pick the source that matches the HDMI input in use.
  3. Reconnect the cables one by one.
  4. Restart the external device.
  5. Plug that device into another HDMI input.
  6. Run the built-in test: Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information > HDMI Cable Test > Start Test.
  7. Replace a cable flagged as faulty with a High Speed HDMI cable.

The external device’s picture should appear on screen.

Tip: change one thing at a time. If the picture comes back, you know which part was the culprit.

If the test points to the cable, here is an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable that works with recent TVs.

A cable flagged as faulty gets replaced with a High Speed HDMI cable.

Solution 4: check the energy saving setting

A Samsung India page describes a setting called Eco Solution, with five levels: Off, Low, Medium, High and Picture Off. Samsung gives no exact path there.

  1. Look for the Eco Solution setting in the TV’s settings.
  2. Check whether the Picture Off level, which makes the picture invisible, is active.
  3. Choose another level, for example Off.

The picture should come back.

Solution 5: try the electrical reset

This procedure comes from Samsung’s Italian page alone. It targets one case: the TV’s light is off and the remote’s light is blinking.

  1. Unplug the TV from the mains.
  2. Unplug all cables from the TV.
  3. Wait 5 to 10 minutes.
  4. Hold the ON/OFF button for about 40 seconds, with the TV still unplugged.
  5. Plug the TV into a working wall outlet.

The red standby light should come on.

If nothing works

Stop in three cases: the light stays off on a working outlet, the light still blinks after 30 seconds unplugged, or neither the remote nor the button gets any reaction from the TV. Then contact Samsung Support, or a Samsung service center in the United States.

Have the model, the serial number and the state of the light ready.

Do not open the TV.

Good to know: a 24-month legal warranty in France is quoted from user reports on a forum, with no official confirmation in our sources. Warranty terms differ from country to country, so ask Samsung or your seller.

Frequently asked questions

Why won’t my Samsung TV turn on when the light is red?

A solid red light means the TV is getting power and sitting in standby. First check whether the button on the TV turns it on: if it does, the remote or its batteries are the suspects. If nothing happens, follow Solution 2 to the end.

How do I reset a Samsung TV that won’t turn on?

Start with the 30-second unplug in Solution 1. Samsung’s Italian page also describes an electrical reset, covered in Solution 5. A factory reset remains the last resort, because it erases channels, clocks, timers and settings.

What does the blinking red light on a Samsung TV mean?

Samsung presents it as a sign of a probable TV fault. There is no official code: the number of blinks does not identify a part. Unplug the TV for 30 seconds, plug it into a wall outlet, then contact Samsung Support if it keeps blinking.

How can I tell if the TV is on but the screen is black?

With a black screen and sound, press Home or Menu on the remote: a visible menu points to a wrong source or no signal. A light that is off can also mean a TV that is on with a black screen.
