With the Mate 50 Pro, Huawei joins Samsung in the high-end smartphone market. The Galaxy S22 Ultra also reflects Samsung’s great ambitions in this sector. Will Huawei’s new phone be able to beat Samsung in this field? Only an in-depth analysis of the Mate 50 Pro compared to the Galaxy S22 Ultra can tell us in this article.

Comparison of Mate 50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra designs and screens

[table “1289” not found /]

Huawei’s Mate 50 Pro is a large format device. It measures 162.1 x 75.5 x 8.5 mm. With its weight of 205 g it can be described as neither light nor heavy. The Mate 50 Pro has a screen protected by Kunlun Glass. This screen and its back are curved. The photo block on the back is surrounded by a golden ring. So we can say that the Mate 5 Pro retains the circular design of its predecessors.

The Mate 50 Pro carries a large 6.74-inch Amoled display. Its resolution is 1212 x 2616 pixels with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz and cannot go below 60 Hz. This screen has a maximum brightness of 964 cd/m². This compensates for a reflectance of 48.9%. Its minimum brightness of 1.9 cd/m² makes it comfortable for night use.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has flat top and bottom edges, and curved sides. Samsung has added a stylus to this Ultra version. This explains the thickness and weight of the smartphone, which weighs 228 g and measures 163.3 x 77.9 x 8.9 mm. A Gorilla Glass Victus+ coating protects the front and back. An aluminum chassis guarantees the S22 Ultra solidity.

The S22 Ultra is equipped with a 6.8-inch Amoled screen with a definition of 1440 x 3088 px (Samsung activates by default a definition Full HD + 2316 x 1080 px, less energy consuming). Its brightness is 500 dpi and its refresh rate goes from 1 to 120Hz. It is compatible with the S-Pen stylus that is associated with the Galaxy Note.

It is obvious that the Mate 50 Pro is less bulky on the arm than the S22 Ultra because it is lighter. But the presence of a stylus on this Samsung Galaxy can make us forget this detail. When we look at the configurations of their screens, we could almost have the same satisfaction on their performance in terms of display.

Who of the Mate 50 Pro and the Galaxy S22 Ultra has the best Camera

The rear of the Mate 50 Pro is flanked by a triple-sensor camera: a 50MP main module, a 13MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, a 64MP telephoto lens. The front sensor reserved for selfie is 13 MP.

Regarding video, the Huawei Mate 50 Pro can capture in 4K at 60 fps max, in 1080p up to 480 fps or even in 720p at 3840 fps. to avoid shaking when taking pictures, Huawei has integrated in the wide – angle and telephoto optical stabilization and electronic stabilization. With the built-in person tracking feature, it’s impossible to miss your target.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra has the same 108-megapixel main sensor on the back as the Galaxy S21 Ultra. It is coupled with a wide-angle f/1.8 lens and laser autofocus. There is a photo block integrated into the back shell. It is composed of a 12MP sensor with an ultra wide-angle (f/2.2), another 10MP with a 3x telephoto lens (f/2.4) and another 10MP with a 230mm equivalent lens (f/4.9). The smartphone uses a feature called pixel-binning to produce 12MP images during the day without difficulty.

We can say that one of the points on which Samsung has focused on its Galaxy S22 Ultra is the camera. More sophisticated than the one on the Mate 50 Pro, it is meant to produce better photos than Huawei’s phone. The Mate 50 Pro’s built-in person-tracking feature is a boon to image accuracy, but the S22 Ultra makes up for that with its pixel – binning.

Battery life of the Mate 50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Mate 50 Pro is powered by a 4700 mAh battery. Its autonomy of 16 h 47 min is in the average of current high-end smartphones. A charger with a power of 66W is provided with the phone. Its fast charge allows it to fill up in only 37 minutes.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is powered by a 5000 mAh battery. Its battery life is about 18 h, but 17:27 min if the adaptive display mode is enabled. The S22 Ultra is compatible with fast charging at 45W, 15W for wireless charging, 4.5W for reverse charging. But, the appropriate charger must be purchased separately. it takes about 1 h 9 min for a full charge.

It is true that the S22 Ultra has a more powerful battery and a better autonomy. But the difference on these two points is slight. However, the Mate 50 Pro has a much faster charging capacity than the Samsung smartphone.

Technical specifications of the Mate 50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra

The Mate 50 Pro uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip. This 8-core processor is paired with 8GB of RAM. The internal memory is 256 GB. When multitasking, the device does not suffer from any slowdown and remains fluid even when multiple applications are open.

For games, the GPU (Adreno 730) allows up to 100 fps, with an average of about 80 fps. Unfortunately the heat lowers the framerate performance by a few dozen frames per second after a few minutes of gaming. So you have to give the phone time to lose a few degrees between games.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra is equipped with the Exynos 2200 processor (SoC in 4nm) for the versions distributed in Europe, or a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 for the rest of the world. Samsung has associated a RAM of 8 or 12 GB and an internal memory of 128 to 1024GB. This is huge to allow you to go from one application to another and download games, videos, etc., without worrying about storage space.

Obviously, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is more powerful than its predecessor the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but the Galaxy S22 Ultra offers better possibilities in terms of memory space. One will definitely feel more comfortable gaming on the S22 Ultra as the heating issue on the Mate 50 Pro alters the gaming experience.

Mate 50 Pro and Galaxy S22 Ultra pricing and market presence

The Mate 50 Pro was released by Huawei in November 2022. It is marketed at a price of € 1199.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra can be purchased from €1259 for the 8/128 GB version. The 12/256GB version costs €1359, while the 12/512GB is worth €1459 and the 12GB/1TB €1659.

Who is better between the Mate 50 Pro and the Galaxy S22 Ultra

The more discreet will certainly prefer the Mate 50 Pro, while the more exhibitionist will choose the Galaxy S22 with its stylus that makes it more Ultra. To these we can add the professional photographers who will be attracted by all the angles offered by the Samsung camera.

However, the Mate 50 Pro is ahead of the Galaxy S22 Ultra on the overall data concerning the autonomy thanks to a very fast charging capacity. A joy for impatient people who hate to part with their phones for a long time when they have to recharge it.

While gamers will more easily throw their lot in with the Galaxy S22 Ultra because they can download as many of their favorite games as possible without worrying about storage. Plus, the gaming experience seems to be smoother on the S22 Ultra.

Still, both phones are high-end smartphones. That’s the reason for their very high prices. But the Galaxy S22 Ultra might appeal to users more than the Mate 50 Pro even though it is more expensive.
