Design-wise, both phones look sleek with aluminium finishes, curved edges and similar colours. They match in ghost green and ghost black, but the S22 Ultra adds ghost white and burgundy, while the S23 Ultra has cream and lavender.
The S23 Ultra is just a millimetre or two larger than the S22 Ultra (163.4 x 78.1 x 8.9 millimetres), and five grams heavier (234 grams).
Both have a 6.8-inch panel with a QHD+ resolution of 3080 x 1440 pixels, a 120Hz refresh rate and Dynamic AMOLED technology. What are the differences?
External brightness is higher on the S23 Ultra, at 2150 nits, compared to 1750 nits on the S22 Ultra. Resistance is provided by Corning Gorilla Victus 2 glass on the S23 Ultra and Victus 1 on the S22 Ultra.
When comparing the Galaxy S22 Ultra with the Galaxy S23 Ultra, both have four versions depending on their RAM and internal storage.
The smaller S23 Ultra has 8GB of RAM and 256GB of ROM, while the S22 Ultra has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of ROM. The others are the same in both: 12GB RAM versions with 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of internal storage.
The S23 Ultra’s processor is a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, with an Adreno 740 GPU and Android 13 with One UI 5.1. The S22 Ultra has an Exynos 2200, an AMD GPU and the Android 12 operating system with One UI 4.1. The S23 Ultra is therefore superior in terms of technical performance.
Connectivity is the same: 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 (5.2 on the S22 Ultra), NFCUWB and GPS. They also include dual stereo speakers, Samsung DeX compatibility, IP68 protection and use the S-Pen.
This is where we find the most important differences between the two phones. The S22 Ultra has a 108 megapixel f/1.8 OIS main sensor, as well as a 40 megapixel front-facing sensor.
In contrast, the S23 Ultra’s main camera is 200 megapixels f/1.7 OIS and the selfie camera is 12 megapixels, a significant difference.
So which one you choose will depend on whether you want to take selfies or photos from a distance. Otherwise, they have the same features: 12 megapixel wide angle, 10 megapixel telephoto (10X telephoto) and 10 megapixel telephoto with 3X zoom.

Battery performance is virtually identical on each, with a 5000mAh battery and a 45W fast charging system. The connectors are also USB Type-C, but wireless charging varies: 15W for the S22 Ultra and 10W for the S23 Ultra.
If you already own a Galaxy S22 Ultra, there’s probably no point in buying the next generation. The biggest changes are to the camera and performance, although these may not be enough reason to make the move now. On the other hand, if you don’t already have one and have the budget for a new camera, the S23 Ultra is a great value for work and play.
