The Infinix Smart 20 is an entry-level 4G phone released in 2026, and it leans on three simple selling points: a big 6.78-inch 120 Hz screen, a 5,200 mAh battery and an IP64-rated body. Selling for the equivalent of 50,000 to 60,000 FCFA in the markets where its price is known, it is aimed at first-time smartphone buyers, people after a backup phone, or anyone whose day revolves around WhatsApp, calls and video. Its Helio G81 Ultimate chip and basic cameras clearly cap what it can do. At this price, though, it is one of the most complete phones of 2026, with a headphone jack, FM radio, microSD and even NFC on some versions.

Introduction: the Smart 20, the entry ticket to the Infinix range

At Infinix, the Smart series sits at the bottom of the ladder, below the Hot line and far below the Note. Its job is to deliver the bare essentials at a rock-bottom price while borrowing a few selling points from pricier models. The Smart 20 replaces the Smart 10. It first showed up at a Philippine retailer in mid-February 2026, was made official in early March, then launched in Kenya and Nigeria in May, in India on 12 June and in Nepal at the end of June. So this is very much a 2026 model.

There is only one version, 4G, sold under the model numbers X6840 and X6840B. Differences between countries come down to storage and whether the NFC chip is included. Infinix has not yet set an official price in French-speaking West and Central Africa. Prices seen elsewhere give a solid reference point: 12,499 shillings in Kenya, around 139,800 naira in Nigeria and 4,499 pesos at a Philippine retailer. Converted, that puts it at roughly €75 to €90 (50,000 to 60,000 FCFA) until an official price is set in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal; check the exact price with your retailer.

At that price, the Smart 20 is for people who want a dependable phone for messaging, social media, mobile money and YouTube without breaking the bank. It also works well as a long-lasting second device. It is not for heavy gamers, or for anyone who cares about photography.

Three numbers sum this phone up. First, the 120 Hz screen: now common in this segment, but still pleasant every day. Next, the 5,200 mAh battery, a little above the usual 5,000 mAh. Finally, 4 GB of RAM paired with eMMC 5.1 storage: that is where the phone’s real bottleneck lies, far more than in the processor itself. Note that some Kenyan shops advertise 8 GB of RAM: that figure adds the physical memory to the virtual RAM borrowed from storage.

Design: slim, light and built to take a knock

The Smart 20 measures 167.7 x 78.8 x 7.7 mm. For a budget phone with a 5,200 mAh battery, that is genuinely slim. Infinix did not list the weight on the spec sheets we consulted; one comparison site puts it at 188 grams, a figure that has yet to be confirmed.

The materials are typical of the segment: glass on the front, plastic back and frame. It comes in four colours: Shadow Black, Cloudline Blue, Polaris Titanium and Sunlike Orange. Around the front camera, the interface can show animated notifications, in the style of the iPhone’s Dynamic Island.

On durability, the spec sheet is better than the price would suggest. The phone is IP64-rated: it is dust-tight and withstands splashes, but it should never be submerged. One Indian listing mentions IP54, but most sources, including the Kenyan and Nepalese press releases, give IP64. It is still wise to check the rating printed on the box of the version sold where you live. Infinix also claims resistance to 1.5-metre drops, backed by more than 25,000 drop tests in the lab, and a screen that responds to wet or greasy fingers.

In West and Central Africa, between Harmattan dust, motorbike taxis and the rainy season, these guarantees matter: a dust-sealed phone ages better, especially around the speakers and the charging port. A case is still a good idea, as the plastic back scratches easily.

The fingerprint reader sits in the power button on the side. Nicely, the 3.5 mm headphone jack survives, as does a dedicated microSD slot: you do not have to choose between a second SIM and a memory card.

Display: 120 Hz and a big panel, but only HD+

The Smart 20 uses a 6.78-inch IPS LCD panel at 720 x 1,576 pixels, with the selfie camera in a punch-hole. The pixel density of 259 ppi is modest. At a normal viewing distance, text stays readable, but a trained eye will spot slight jagged edges on small fonts and icons. Its direct rivals are no better.

The real treat is the 120 Hz refresh rate. Scrolling through Facebook, TikTok or WhatsApp is noticeably smoother than at 60 Hz. The claimed 240 Hz touch sampling rate also makes the screen feel more responsive. With an entry-level chip, however, the interface will not always hold 120 frames per second.

Peak brightness is rated at 700 nits in high-brightness mode. On paper, that is enough to read a message outdoors, but not to comfortably watch a video in full sun in Dakar or Douala. Find some shade if you are following a live match at midday.

Performance: fine for the basics, not for gaming

The Smart 20 runs on the MediaTek Helio G81 Ultimate, built on a 12 nm process. Its CPU combines two Cortex-A75 cores at 2.0 GHz with six Cortex-A55 cores, alongside a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. It is a chip found in many 2026 Transsion phones, including the 4G version of the Tecno Spark 50. One online comparison site credits it with around 262,000 points on AnTuTu v10, a score that, as far as we know, no independent test has confirmed yet.

In practice, WhatsApp, YouTube, Google Maps and mobile money apps run without trouble. Instagram and TikTok take longer to load. Multitasking is held back by the 4 GB of physical RAM: jumping from the camera to WhatsApp and then to the browser may force some apps to reload.

The eMMC 5.1 storage is the bigger drag. It is much slower than the UFS storage in slightly pricier phones. The virtual RAM feature, called MemFusion, can borrow up to 4 GB from storage, but it is no substitute for real memory: it helps keep apps in the background without making them run any faster.

For gaming, expect low graphics settings. Free Fire and eFootball remain playable, PUBG Mobile will run at minimum quality, and Genshin Impact is out of the question. The 12 nm chip stays fairly cool in normal use; a long gaming session in the heat, on the other hand, can cause performance to drop. Infinix highlights a 48-month smoothness certification, an in-house label promising that the phone will not slow down too much over time, with no warranty value.

Good to know — Go for the 128 GB version if you can. The system and preinstalled apps take up a good chunk of the 64 GB, and while the microSD slot is handy for music and photos, it does not replace enough internal storage for apps.

Camera: 8 MP front and back, the bare minimum

Infinix makes no attempt to turn the Smart 20 into a camera phone. On the back is an 8 MP main sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, small in size (1/4 inch), with autofocus and a dual LED flash. Some listings mention a secondary auxiliary module with no real photographic function, though not every source mentions it. There is no ultra-wide, no telephoto and no optical stabilisation.

In daylight with good light, a sensor like this produces decent images for WhatsApp and social media. Detail is limited, and very bright areas, such as a midday sky, are likely to blow out. A built-in document scanner comes in handy for sending a receipt.

At night, the small sensor shows its limits. The Super Night mode advertised by Infinix brightens the image, but at the cost of noise and blur as soon as the light really drops.

For video, the phone records up to 1440p at 30 frames per second, with no optical stabilisation. A Dual View mode films with both cameras at once. On the front, the 8 MP selfie camera, also f/2.0, is good enough for video calls and daytime selfies.

Battery and charging: 5,200 mAh to ride out power cuts

This is the Smart 20’s strong suit. Its 5,200 mAh battery powers an undemanding HD+ screen and a frugal chip. With moderate use, mixing messaging, calls and a bit of video, a day and a half of battery life looks realistic. With light use, two days are within reach. Infinix claims up to 39 days on standby, a lab figure that does not reflect real-world use.

The brand also highlights a more telling figure: with 5% battery left, the phone should last up to 2 hours of calls or 24 hours on standby, thanks to an aggressive power-saving mode. In cities where load-shedding is frequent, that reserve can make all the difference.

Wired charging tops out at 15 W. One Nigerian source mentions 18 W, but most spec sheets say 15 W. Infinix does not give a full charging time. At 15 W, it is slow, but in line with the price. The Smart 20 can also charge another device by cable, at 5 W: useful for topping up earbuds or a relative’s phone.

The Smart 20 ships with Android 16 under Infinix’s XOS 16 interface. That is the good news: it is a recent Android version for a phone at this price. The bad news is that Infinix has announced no update policy for this model. Historically, Smart phones get few new Android versions and irregular security patches, so do not count on long-term support until Infinix makes a commitment.

XOS adds a layer of artificial intelligence features reachable from a single shortcut. The Folax voice assistant answers questions and creates reminders. There is also a writing assistant, an image-creation tool called AI Studio, song recognition and photo-to-document conversion. Voice noise reduction, called Voiceprint or Pure Voice depending on the country, filters out background noise during calls, a real plus in a taxi or at the market.

The most original feature is called Ultra Link. It lets you call, send messages, voice notes or images to another compatible Infinix phone without a mobile network, up to about one kilometre in open ground. That is useful in rural areas or on a building site. Actual range will depend heavily on obstacles, and the person you are contacting also needs a compatible model.

As always with Transsion, expect preinstalled apps: an in-house app store, games, the brand’s own browser and content suggestions. Most of them can be uninstalled or disabled. Clean things up on first boot and turn off promotional notifications.

Price and availability: around 50,000 to 60,000 FCFA

As far as we know, Infinix has not yet published an official FCFA price for the Smart 20. Prices elsewhere give a good idea of its range. In Kenya, it launched on 5 May 2026 at 12,499 shillings for 64 GB and 13,999 shillings for 128 GB, or about €84 and €93 (55,000 and 61,000 FCFA). In Nigeria, buyer’s guides list it at 139,800 naira for 64 GB and 154,800 naira for 128 GB, or about €79 and €88 (52,000 and 58,000 FCFA). These conversions are indicative and move with the naira exchange rate.

Asian prices vary more. In the Philippines, one retailer listed it at 4,499 pesos for 64 GB, about 43,000 FCFA or 66 euros. In India, it sells for 12,499 rupees for 64 GB and 13,999 rupees for 128 GB, around 120 and 135 euros: a noticeably more expensive market.

In French-speaking Africa, Transsion’s usual pattern is for the phone to reach authorised resellers and Jumia in the months after the Nigerian and Kenyan launches. Buy it from an official reseller if possible: you get the warranty and Carlcare after-sales service, which has centres in Douala, Yaoundé, Abidjan and Dakar.

In France, the Smart 20 is not officially on sale. We found no product listing at Amazon.fr, Fnac, Darty or Cdiscount. Importing it through marketplaces is still possible, without a local warranty. Good news for travellers: the phone supports 4G bands 3, 7, 20 and 28, used by French carriers, as well as bands 1, 3, 7 and 8, which are common in Africa.

Infinix Hot 70

If every note counts, the Tecno Spark Go 3 follows the same recipe, with a 120 Hz screen, 5,000 mAh and IP64, but a slower Unisoc chip and a price that is often a little lower. The 4G Tecno Spark 50 shares the Smart 20’s Helio G81 chip and costs slightly more: it is worth a look if you find it at a similar price. Finally, if you can stretch your budget by a few tens of thousands of francs, the Infinix Hot 70 is the next step up the range: check its spec sheet to see what the extra money gets you.

Conclusion: should you buy the Infinix Smart 20?

Yes, as long as you know what you are buying. The Smart 20 does not impress on any technical front, but it ticks a lot of useful boxes for a phone selling at around 50,000 to 60,000 FCFA: a smooth screen, a battery that holds up through power cuts, a dust-protected body and a set of ports that pricier phones have dropped. As a first smartphone, a backup device or a phone mainly for staying in touch, it is a sensible choice.

Look elsewhere if you game regularly, if you like taking photos on nights out, or if you plan to keep your phone for four years and stay up to date. In that case, it is better to save up for a higher-end model.

Good to know — Before buying, check the box for NFC if you plan to pay contactless, and go for the 128 GB version. Ask for a receipt so you can claim the Carlcare warranty if something goes wrong.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Infinix Smart 20 cost in Cameroon?

Infinix has not yet announced an official price in Cameroon. Based on prices in Kenya and Nigeria, two markets where the phone is already on sale, it should cost around 50,000 to 55,000 FCFA for the 4 GB and 64 GB version, and about 60,000 FCFA for 128 GB. Prices vary between resellers and launch promotions. Compare authorised shops with Jumia, and choose a seller who gives you a receipt so you are covered by the Carlcare warranty.

Does the Infinix Smart 20 support 5G?

No. The Infinix Smart 20 is 4G only, because its Helio G81 Ultimate chip does not support 5G. There is no 5G variant of this model. Across much of Africa, where 5G is still limited to a few districts of major cities, that is not a big handicap. The phone supports many 4G bands, including bands 3, 7, 8 and 20, as well as dual nano-SIM and dual-band Wi-Fi 5. If 5G is a must for you, you will need to look at a more expensive model.

Is the Infinix Smart 20 waterproof?

It is water-resistant, not waterproof. The IP64 rating means it is fully protected against dust and withstands water splashes, such as a downpour or a spilled glass. It should never be dunked in water or used in the shower, though. Infinix also claims resistance to drops of up to 1.5 metres. These protections wear down over time and with knocks, and water damage is generally not covered by the warranty.

How many Android updates will the Infinix Smart 20 get?

Infinix has not made any specific commitment for this model. The Smart 20 ships with Android 16 and the XOS 16 interface, so it is up to date at launch. Previous Smart models received few new Android versions, sometimes none, and only occasional security patches. It is safest to assume it will largely stay on Android 16. The brand highlights a 48-month smoothness certification, which covers performance, not updates.
