When CarPlay is not working, the car screen stays on its own menu even though your iPhone is plugged in or in range. Most of the time the cable, the USB port, an iPhone setting or the pairing between the iPhone and the car is to blame. Do every test with the vehicle parked.
Common symptoms and causes
- Nothing shows on the car screen when you plug in the iPhone.
- The iPhone charges, but CarPlay never starts.
- CarPlay starts, then drops out while you drive.
- Wireless CarPlay does not appear, and the car stereo cannot find the iPhone.
- Possible causes: cable or USB port, Siri turned off, a Screen Time restriction, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi switched off, a corrupted iPhone-to-car pairing, or an outdated version of iOS or of the car stereo software.
Before you start
CarPlay must be available in your country, the car must support CarPlay, and the iPhone must run the latest version of iOS. Not sure your car is compatible? The owner’s manual or the manufacturer will tell you.
Warning: do every test with the vehicle parked safely and stopped. Never handle the phone or the car stereo settings while driving. Switch the ignition off when a step does not need the screen on; do not touch the airbags, the seat belt pretensioners or the high-voltage system of a hybrid or electric vehicle; a red warning light means you must stop the vehicle; this guide does not replace a diagnosis at a garage.
Warning: solution 5 suggests resetting the iPhone’s network settings as a last resort. This erases saved Wi-Fi passwords. Write them down first.
Solution 1: check that CarPlay is allowed on the iPhone
CarPlay needs Siri, Apple’s voice assistant, to be turned on. A Screen Time restriction, the iPhone’s parental control tool, can also hide CarPlay.
- Open the iPhone Settings and check that Siri is turned on.
- Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions.
- If restrictions are on, tap Allowed Apps.
- Turn on the CarPlay switch.
- Plug the iPhone in again, or move it closer to the car.
The car screen should now show the CarPlay interface with its app icons.
Solution 2: swap the cable and the USB port
With a wired connection, the cable, the USB port or an adapter can block CarPlay. This is the most common cause.
- Plug the iPhone in with a different USB cable.
- Try another USB port in the car: some cars have several.
- If you use a USB-C to Lightning adapter, remove it and use a direct USB cable between the car and the iPhone.
CarPlay should start once the iPhone is connected.

Tip: a cheap cable sold for charging does not always carry data. The iPhone charges, but CarPlay never opens. Keep a certified data cable in the car.
Good to know: the USB-C to Lightning adapter works most of the time, but Apple notes that some combinations of adapter, cable and car cut the connection. If your car only supports wired CarPlay, use a direct cable.
If your cable is worn or only carries power, here are two cables that carry data: one with a Lightning plug, the other USB-C for recent iPhones.

Solution 3: forget the car and pair it again
The saved pairing between the iPhone and the car can get corrupted. Deleting it and setting CarPlay up again starts from a clean slate.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Tap the name of your car.
- Tap Forget This Car.
- On the car screen, open the connection manager and remove the iPhone from the list of CarPlay devices, if your car stereo allows it.
- Plug the iPhone in again or restart the CarPlay search, then follow the setup shown on the iPhone and on the car screen.
The car should reappear in Settings > General > CarPlay, and CarPlay should open.
The step on the car stereo comes from user reports, not from Apple. The menu name varies by manufacturer: look for “Connections”, “Devices” or “Smartphone” in the manual.
Solution 4: when wireless CarPlay stops working
Wireless CarPlay needs both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the iPhone.
- Turn on Bluetooth on the iPhone.
- Turn on Wi-Fi on the iPhone.
- In the Wi-Fi settings, open the car’s CarPlay network and turn on automatic connection.
- If CarPlay does not start on its own, tap the CarPlay logo on the car screen.
The CarPlay interface should appear without a cable.
Tip: if the iPhone will not connect to any Bluetooth device, fix that first with our guide to fix an iPhone that won’t connect to Bluetooth.
Solution 5: restart and update the iPhone and the car stereo
Apple recommends restarting the iPhone and the car, then installing the latest versions of iOS and of the car stereo software.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Restart the car.
- Install the latest version of iOS on the iPhone.
- Check the car’s manual to see how to install the latest car stereo software released by the manufacturer.
After the updates, plug the iPhone in again: CarPlay should start.

Good to know: according to the specialist press, a wireless CarPlay bug that appeared with iOS 18.4 was fixed by iOS 18.4.1. Apple does not mention it on its help page.
Last resort, suggested on forums but not by Apple: resetting the network settings. It erases the Wi-Fi passwords saved on the iPhone. Write them down before you continue.
- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset.
- Tap Reset, then choose the option to reset network settings.
Then reconnect the iPhone to your Wi-Fi networks.
If nothing works
If CarPlay still does not start, contact the car manufacturer (Ford, Toyota, Volkswagen, BMW…) or a dealer of the brand. Ask whether a car stereo software update exists for your vehicle.
Stereo up to date? Contact Apple Support.
If you use an adapter, test with a direct cable first before concluding something is broken.
If your car only supports CarPlay over a cable, a wireless adapter saves you from plugging the iPhone in on every trip. Here are two models to compare.

Frequently asked questions
Why does CarPlay not start when I plug in my iPhone?
The cable, the USB port or an iPhone setting most often stops CarPlay from starting. Try another cable and another USB port. Then check that Siri is turned on and that CarPlay is allowed in Screen Time.
How do I turn CarPlay back on?
Open Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps and turn on CarPlay. Also check that Siri is turned on. If you turned CarPlay off on purpose, our guide to turn off CarPlay on iPhone shows the same settings the other way round.
Do I need a special cable for CarPlay?
Apple recommends trying another USB cable and another USB port in the car. If a USB-C to Lightning adapter causes trouble, switch to a direct USB cable between the car and the iPhone.
Why did CarPlay stop working after an iOS update?
CarPlay needs the latest version of iOS, and the car stereo must be up to date too. Install the latest iOS, then ask the manufacturer for the latest car stereo update. According to the press, the wireless CarPlay bug in iOS 18.4 was fixed by iOS 18.4.1.
