Is your iPhone 18 Pro lagging on iOS 27 even though it just came out of the box? It is almost never the chip. Two things overlap. In the first few days, the phone indexes your data in the background, which can make the interface less smooth. And iOS 27 has genuine interface bugs, one of which, a touchscreen freeze after opening Notification Center and Control Center in quick succession, is listed in the iOS 27.0.1 release notes. Most freezes clear up with a force restart. Then install the latest version of iOS, let indexing finish, and adjust a few display settings if the stutters persist.
Quick fix
- Frozen screen, with the Camera and Flashlight buttons stuck at the top: force restart (volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears).
- Settings > General > Software Update: install iOS 27.0.1 or any later version.
- Indexing in Progress banner in Settings: leave the iPhone plugged in, on Wi-Fi and unused for one or two nights.
- Stutters in the app switcher: switch your icons back to the default style, then try Reduce Motion and Reduce Transparency.
- A widget that stays blank or freezes the Home Screen: remove it, restart, add it back.
- YouTube thumbnails that start playing on their own with no sound: that’s a YouTube app setting, not an iOS bug.
How to recognize the problem: symptoms reported on iOS 27
Complaints line up across the MacRumors forums, Reddit and the tech press. They fall into six groups.
- Stutters in the app switcher. When you swipe up from the bottom of the screen, or flick an app up to close it, the animation hiccups instead of gliding. One iPhone 18 Pro owner writes on MacRumors that closing an app “isn’t smooth.” Another finds iOS 27 less pleasant on his 18 Pro than on his old 17 Pro.
- Control Center freezing or the touchscreen not responding. The Camera and Flashlight buttons on the Lock Screen stay stuck at the top of the screen, you can no longer swipe between Home Screen pages, every other tap is ignored and the power-off slider refuses to move.
- Widgets that are blank, flicker or crash. A Calendar widget that no longer shows any events, a white widget, or a Home Screen that freezes when you drag a widget from one page to another in edit mode.
- Freezing while setting a timer. Some users describe the interface locking up for a few seconds while they set the duration. As far as we know, this symptom has neither been acknowledged by Apple nor documented by the tech press.
- Freezing while scrolling a pop-up, menu or list that opens on top of an app. Same status: isolated reports, no confirmation.
- YouTube thumbnails that start playing on their own, muted, as you scroll the app’s home feed.

Why is my new iPhone 18 Pro lagging on iOS 27?
Because smoothness depends as much on software as on the chip, and the software is young. Apple presents iOS 27 as a faster release, with more responsive animations and apps that launch up to 30% faster. Those gains assume a system at rest, which a freshly set up iPhone 18 Pro is not. Three causes add up.
The indexing phase in the first few days
iOS 27 completely rebuilds its search index, the one used by Spotlight, Siri and search in Photos or Mail. While that work runs, an Indexing in Progress banner appears at the top of Settings, noting that you can use your iPhone normally and that indexing may take some time. Apple says it can last hours or even days depending on how much data you have, and that it goes faster when three conditions are met: the device is not in use, plugged into power and connected to Wi-Fi.
On MacRumors, users most often report 24 to 48 hours, sometimes with small visual glitches and some heat (our article on the iPhone 18 Pro overheating and battery drain on iOS 27 covers that side). A direct link with the stutters hasn’t been proven, but it makes sense: the processor and storage are busy in the background while you scroll through the interface. If your iPhone 18 Pro has been lagging for less than three days, start there.
Visual effects: Liquid Glass
iOS 27 keeps Liquid Glass, the design introduced with iOS 26: semi-transparent bars, buttons and menus that blur whatever passes behind them. Apple added an opacity slider, under Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass. Every transparent layer forces the graphics processor to recalculate the background with each movement. At 120 frames per second on a ProMotion display, each frame has to be ready in roughly 8 milliseconds. Miss just one, and the eye notices a hitch.
On MacRumors, users report that the app switcher stutters on ProMotion iPhones when icons are set to the tinted or clear style, and becomes smooth again with default icons, including on iOS 27.0.1. The thread’s author claims the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are spared. The test costs nothing, so try it anyway.
Genuine iOS 27 bugs
The rest comes down to software defects. The best known is the freeze triggered by Notification Center and Control Center (see fix 1). It isn’t specific to the iPhone 18: 9to5Mac reproduced it on an iPhone Air, and a MacRumors member on an iPhone 17 Pro Max and an iPhone 14. Same story for the widget-related freeze, also reported on older models. This matters for what follows: a bug you can reproduce on other iPhones doesn’t, on its own, justify a replacement of your device.
Before you start
Make sure your iCloud backup is recent (Settings > [your name] > iCloud > iCloud Backup). Note your iOS version in Settings > General > About. If a freeze is reproducible, film it with another phone: the video will help when you report it and, if needed, when you take the phone in for service.
Fix 1: unfreeze a screen locked up by Control Center
What triggers the freeze?
On the Home Screen, you swipe down from the top left corner to open Notification Center, then, before the animation finishes, swipe down from the top right corner to open Control Center. When you close it, the interface locks up. Clubic’s testers often needed two or three tries: it mostly happens when you move fast.
Force restart
- Press and quickly release the volume up button.
- Press and quickly release the volume down button.
- Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears, which can take more than ten seconds. Ignore the power-off slider if it shows up.
Risk: none, your data stays intact. How to check: the Home Screen responds again.
Does iOS 27.0.1 fix the freeze?
According to its release notes, yes: Apple lists a fix for an issue that could make the touchscreen unresponsive after opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time. One caveat: several outlets could still reproduce it on an iOS 27.2 beta, and 9to5Mac only saw the problem go away from beta 2 of that version. After updating, repeat the gesture two or three times. If it still freezes your iPhone, report it (fix 7) and simply slow down your swipe in the meantime.
Another source of confusion: when the new-generation Siri is active, a swipe down from the middle of the top edge opens Siri rather than Notification Center, which now comes down from the top left corner. According to 9to5Mac, there is no setting to turn this gesture off. If “nothing opens” or Siri appears instead of your notifications, that isn’t a freeze.
Fix 2: let indexing finish
- Open Settings and check whether the Indexing in Progress banner appears at the top of the screen.
- If it does, plug the iPhone in at night, on Wi-Fi, screen locked, and leave it alone until morning.
- Repeat for one or two nights.
Risk: none. How to check: the banner disappears and the stutters ease off. During this period, avoid keeping Low Power Mode on all the time, as it slows down background tasks and stretches out the phase.
Fix 3: tone down the visual effects
These settings don’t fix a bug, but they reduce the graphics workload and make animations shorter. Try them one at a time, so you know which one really makes a difference.
Default icons
Touch and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Customize, and pick the default style instead of the tinted or clear style. This is the first test to run if the app switcher stutters.
Reduce Motion
Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Reduce Motion. Zoom and slide effects become fades. The app switcher and app launches feel more abrupt, but hitches are much less visible. The downside: some people find the iPhone feels less lively.
Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > Reduce Transparency. Blurred backgrounds become opaque, which removes a good share of the Liquid Glass blur calculations. Increase Contrast, in the same menu, adds crisp borders and also makes surfaces more opaque. The Liquid Glass slider in Settings > Appearance offers a middle ground: drag it toward the more opaque end without switching everything off.
ProMotion and Limit Frame Rate
Settings > Accessibility > Motion > Limit Frame Rate caps the display at 60 frames per second. Don’t leave it on: the interface will be less smooth, not more. Use it as a test. If the stutters disappear at 60 frames per second, the system can’t keep up with 120 frames in certain animations; the defect is in the software, and an update should take care of it. If nothing changes, look instead at indexing or an app.
Fix 4: get widgets back in shape
Remove and re-add the problem widget
- Touch and hold the blank or flickering widget, then tap Remove Widget.
- Restart the iPhone normally.
- Touch and hold an empty area, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and put it back.
During the iOS 27 betas, iPhone in Canada found that widgets that had vanished or turned white came back after a simple restart, even though they no longer showed up in the widget search. Also update the app that provides the widget from the App Store: a third-party widget not yet adapted to iOS 27 stays blank more often than not.
Cut back on interactive widgets
An interactive widget (checkbox, play button, smart home switch) refreshes often. If you have a dozen of them on your Home Screen, keep the ones you actually use. That’s common sense, not a defect acknowledged by Apple.
Don’t move widgets around repeatedly
The Home Screen can freeze when you drag a widget from one page to another in edit mode, especially with quick back-and-forth moves. Geeky Gadgets reports that this problem persists on iOS 27.0.1. Until a fix arrives, move widgets slowly, one page at a time, and force restart if everything locks up.
Fix 5: clean up Control Center
A Control Center overloaded with third-party controls across several pages can become slow to open. Open it, touch and hold an empty area (or tap the + button at the top left) to enter edit mode, and tap the minus sign on controls you don’t need, starting with those from third-party apps.
A note on the timer: on iOS 27, touching and holding the Timer control in Control Center now opens a menu (stopwatch, timer, alarm) instead of letting you set the duration directly. If the freeze happens at that point, try setting the duration from the Clock app instead, and tell us in the comments whether it locks up there too.
Fix 6: update, then reset all settings
- Settings > General > Software Update: install the latest version offered. If you are still on iOS 27.0, this is the priority. Turn on Automatic Updates on the same screen as well.
- Update all your apps in the App Store (tap your profile picture, then Update All).
- If the freezes continue: Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset All Settings.
Your photos, messages and apps stay where they are; Wi-Fi networks and display, accessibility and privacy settings go back to defaults. How to check: spend a day repeating the gestures that used to freeze the interface.
For a freeze inside the Settings app itself (Screen Time in particular was mentioned by one iPhone 18 Pro Max owner), our guide to Messages showing a black screen and Settings freezing covers other leads.
Fix 7: report the bug to Apple, with logs
A bug only gets fixed if it gets reported. Apple collects feedback at apple.com/feedback, in the iPhone section: describe the exact gesture, the model, the iOS version and how often it happens. If you are enrolled in the beta program, you can attach logs through the Feedback Assistant app.
In Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Analytics Data, look for recent files named SpringBoard (the process that runs the Home Screen) or named after the app involved, and turn on Share iPhone Analytics so they reach Apple. Panic-full files after each freeze mean the iPhone is restarting: that’s a different and more serious problem, which we cover in our article on the iPhone 18 Pro that keeps restarting.
Why do YouTube thumbnails autoplay on mute?
It isn’t iOS 27. It’s a YouTube app feature called playback in feeds: as you scroll the home feed or search results, the video in the middle of the screen starts playing muted, with captions on. On a new iPhone, the app starts over with its default settings, which explains the impression that something changed after the move to the iPhone 18.
- In the YouTube app, tap your profile picture.
- Tap the Settings gear, then General.
- Tap Playback in feeds and choose Off, or Wi-Fi only to spare your data plan.
The iOS setting Auto-Play Video Previews (Settings > Accessibility > Motion) only applies to Apple’s own apps: it has no effect on YouTube.

iPhone 18 Pro lagging on iOS 27 no matter what: when is it the hardware?
An interface bug affects every iPhone running the same iOS version. A hardware fault follows your device. Three signs should send you toward service: taps ignored with no triggering gesture, always in the same area of the screen; freezes that persist on the latest iOS version after resetting all settings; or restarts that come with panic-full files.
The most telling test is a full erase (Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings), followed by two days of use without restoring your backup. If the iPhone 18 Pro stays smooth, the cause lies in your data or an app. If it still lags when it’s clean, your case becomes solid.
Diagnostics and appointments
Contact Apple from the Apple Support app: an advisor can start a remote diagnostic, which you approve on your iPhone. At the Genius Bar, technicians run the same tests, touchscreen included. Bring the video of the freeze, screenshots of your iOS version and analytics data, and the list of fixes you’ve already tried.
Returns, replacements and your rights
- Bought from Apple: you have 14 days after delivery to return it. A defect you notice on arrival should be reported within that window.
- Apple’s one-year limited warranty covers manufacturing defects.
- AppleCare+: useful mainly for accidental damage; a manufacturing defect is already covered by the warranty.
- Consumer law in your country may add rights against the seller. In the UK, the Consumer Rights Act lets you ask the retailer for a repair, replacement or refund when goods are faulty. In the EU, the seller owes a legal guarantee of conformity. If you bought the iPhone from a carrier or a retailer, that seller is the one to contact.
Keep in mind that a replacement won’t fix an iOS 27 bug: the new device will have the same one. Save this route for symptoms that point to the hardware.
Readers in Africa
In Nigeria, Kenya or Ghana, go through an Apple Authorized Service Provider, which you can find in the Apple Support app, with your receipt in hand. The warranty on an iPhone bought in Europe applies primarily in the European Economic Area. Update the iPhone first: most of the cases described here are solved without opening it.

Keeping it from happening again
Start major updates at the end of the day, plugged in, and give it two or three days before judging how smooth it is. Keep a tidy Home Screen, update the apps that provide your widgets, and report any gesture that reliably freezes your iPhone.
FAQ
Why is my new iPhone 18 Pro lagging on iOS 27?
Most often because of indexing in the first few days, sometimes because of an iOS 27 bug. Check for the Indexing in Progress banner in Settings and install the latest version of iOS.
How long does iOS 27 indexing take?
Apple says anywhere from a few hours to a few days. Users often report 24 to 48 hours. Plugged in, on Wi-Fi and left alone, the iPhone finishes faster.
How do I unfreeze an iPhone that stops responding after opening Control Center?
With a force restart: volume up, volume down, then hold the side button until the Apple logo appears. No data is lost.
Does iOS 27.0.1 fix iPhone 18 Pro freezes?
It fixes the freeze caused by opening Notification Center and Control Center at the same time, as well as restarts related to Face ID. The freeze when moving widgets isn’t on the list.
Should I turn off ProMotion to get rid of the stutters?
No. Limiting the frame rate to 60 Hz is a test, not a fix. If the stutters disappear that way, wait for an iOS update.
How do I stop YouTube videos from playing on their own?
In the YouTube app: profile picture, Settings, General, Playback in feeds, Off.
Should I get my lagging iPhone 18 Pro replaced?
Only if the problem persists on an erased, up-to-date iPhone, or if the screen ignores taps with no triggering gesture. An iOS 27 bug would show up on the replacement device too.
