The ROG Xbox Ally X remains, a year after its release, the most comfortable Windows handheld to hold and one of the fastest, but it now costs €999.99 (about 656,000 FCFA) in France, €100 more than at launch. Designed by Asus with Microsoft, it combines an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip, 24GB of memory, an 80Wh battery and grips modelled on the Xbox controller. It suits players who want Steam and Game Pass on a single machine and can put up with the moods of Windows 11. For an OLED screen, look elsewhere.

Introduction: a year on, is the ROG Xbox Ally X still worth its price?

Microsoft did not build a portable Xbox. The group teamed up with Asus to restyle the 2024 ROG Ally X, graft controller grips onto it and adapt Windows 11 to gaming without a mouse. The result was unveiled on 8 June 2025 and went on sale on 16 October 2025 in some forty countries, including France.

The range has two machines. The white ROG Xbox Ally carries a Ryzen Z2 A chip and 16GB of memory for €599 (about 393,000 FCFA). The black ROG Xbox Ally X targets players prepared to pay the price of a home console and a half to take their PC games with them: a high-end processor, 24GB of memory, a 1TB SSD and a bigger battery.

Since then, the context has changed. The surge in memory prices, covered in our article on the RAM shortage and DDR5 prices, has pushed up the cost of every handheld, and Asus is launching an X20 version with an OLED screen on 15 October 2026. This page draws on the official specifications and the measurements from published reviews. Our newsroom has not had the handheld in hand.

Three figures matter in this table. First, the 24GB of memory: the integrated graphics chip draws on system memory, and recent games readily ask for 8GB for their textures alone. Then the 80Wh, which is 60% more than the 50Wh of a Steam Deck OLED. Finally the USB4 port, which accepts an external graphics card or a docking station.

ROG Xbox Ally X design: an Xbox controller cut in two

The idea fits in one image: an Xbox controller sawn down the middle, with a 7-inch screen slipped between the two halves. The grips are full, rounded and textured, where the 2024 ROG Ally X made do with flat edges. This is the point on which reviews agree the most. Notebookcheck speaks of clearly improved ergonomics, and both Windows Central and Trusted Reviews give the ROG Xbox Ally X 4.5 out of 5, largely for that reason.

A thick but well-balanced chassis

That comfort comes at a cost in bulk: 29cm wide, 12.1cm tall, up to 5.09cm thick at the grips and 715g, which is 75g more than a Steam Deck OLED. The weight does rest in the palms rather than on the fingers, however, and reviewers describe long sessions without any cramping.

The screen glass is Gorilla Glass Victus with an anti-reflective coating. There is no water or dust resistance rating: in a hot, dusty climate, regular cleaning of the fans is a must. Asus has included neither a kickstand, nor a touchpad, nor a webcam.

Ergonomics and controls: impulse triggers and an Xbox button

The controls follow the layout of an Xbox controller: asymmetric sticks, a D-pad, ABXY buttons in the usual colours. The Hall effect analogue triggers have their own vibration motors, the impulse triggers of the Xbox controller. In a racing game, you feel the wheels locking up under your index finger.

Asus only highlights Hall effect for the triggers: the sticks keep conventional technology, which the X20 replaces with TMR sticks. Two programmable buttons sit on the back, in a position that JVTech considers could be better. The Xbox button opens a Game Bar designed for the controller, and the fingerprint reader saves you from typing a code at every wake-up.

Display: a decent 120Hz IPS panel, overtaken by OLED

This is the component that has evolved the least. The 7-inch IPS touchscreen shows 1,920 x 1,080 pixels at 120Hz, with FreeSync Premium variable refresh rate. Asus quotes 500 nits and 100% of sRGB. Notebookcheck measured a little less: 490 cd/m² at most, a contrast ratio of 1,485:1 and 93% of sRGB, with no flicker. Variable refresh rate irons out the stutter between 40 and 60 frames per second, but 490 nits is still on the low side in direct sunlight.

The problem comes from the comparison. A Steam Deck OLED, a Legion Go 2 and now the X20 offer perfect blacks and HDR. On the ROG Xbox Ally X, dark scenes lean towards grey. For a handheld sold at close to €1,000, it is the hardest compromise to defend.

Performance: what the Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme is worth in games

The Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme brings together eight cores (three Zen 5 and five Zen 5c), sixteen threads and a Radeon graphics part with sixteen RDNA 3.5 cores, the family of the Radeon 890M found in laptops. It comes with 24GB of LPDDR5X memory and a 1TB NVMe SSD, measured at 3,832 MB/s in read speed by Notebookcheck.

Four power modes

The ROG Xbox Ally X adjusts its power draw in steps, recorded as follows by Notebookcheck:

  • Silent: 13W, for 2D games, emulation and video.
  • Performance: 17W, the best balance between smoothness and battery life.
  • Turbo on battery: 25W, for recent games in 1080p.
  • Turbo on mains: 35W, the maximum, reserved for plugged-in use.

The frame rates recorded by reviews

In 1080p with settings at maximum, the chip reaches its limits: 28 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 and 32.5 in Baldur’s Gate 3, according to Notebookcheck. So the sliders have to come down. JVTech records 39 frames per second in Cyberpunk 2077 at high quality on battery, and 50 to 60 in Doom: The Dark Ages.

Keep this rule in mind: on the ROG Xbox Ally X, a recent AAA game runs at between 30 and 45 frames per second in 1080p on medium to high settings, and climbs to 60 in 720p or with FSR upscaling. That is better than a Steam Deck, and a long way from a laptop with a dedicated graphics card.

Heat, noise and Auto SR

Heat is concentrated at the top of the chassis, away from the hands, according to JVTech. Noise depends on the mode: 29.7 dB(A) in Silent, which is next to nothing, but 43.4 dB(A) in Turbo according to Notebookcheck, which lists these fans among the flaws.

The 50 TOPS neural chip is used for Auto SR, an AI upscaling feature that arrived in preview on 30 April 2026 and is reserved for the ROG Xbox Ally X. Windows Central describes a real visual gain in Silent Hill 2 and Lies of P, but erratic behaviour.

Game library and compatibility: an Xbox that does not play Xbox games

The logo is misleading. The ROG Xbox Ally X is a PC: it does not run games bought for Xbox Series or Xbox One, unless they carry the Xbox Play Anywhere label, which entitles you to the PC version. For everything else, there is cloud gaming and remote play from your console, both of which depend on your connection.

In return, the entire PC catalogue opens up to you: Steam, the Epic Games Store, GOG, Battle.net and Game Pass for PC. Games with kernel-level anti-cheat such as Fortnite or Call of Duty work, whereas they are blocked under SteamOS.

Microsoft also labels games according to how they behave on the machine: more than 1,000 titles were listed at the end of April 2026 according to Xbox Wire. Some get default settings and precompiled shaders, which shorten the first launch. Game Pass remains the natural companion to the handheld, despite its price rise in autumn 2025.

ROG Xbox Ally X battery life: 80Wh and a charger to buy separately

At 80Wh, the ROG Xbox Ally X battery is among the largest in the sector. JVTech gets 3 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours in big games in power-saving mode, about 3 hours in Performance mode and 2 hours to 2 hours 30 minutes in Turbo. Gamergen records between 1 hour 45 minutes and 2 hours 30 minutes in Forza Horizon 5, Elden Ring or Cyberpunk 2077, and more than 3 hours in Hades II.

So count on two hours of demanding play at full power, three hours if you lower the power draw, and more in indie games. That is decent for a pocket PC, and not as good as a Switch 2.

Charging goes through either of the two USB-C ports, using Power Delivery. Gamergen recorded about 30 minutes to reach 50% with a 65W brick. A 45W charger is not enough during a heavy game, JVTech warns.

Good to know — In France, the ROG Xbox Ally X is sold without a charger, as the Fnac and Boulanger listings state. You need a USB-C Power Delivery brick of at least 65W. The official Asus model costs €49 (about 32,000 FCFA), but a 65W or 100W USB-C laptop charger will do the job.

Software: Xbox mode on Windows 11, a year of updates

The ROG Xbox Ally X runs Windows 11 Home, but boots into a full-screen interface, first called Xbox Full Screen Experience and later renamed Xbox mode. It loads the Xbox app instead of the desktop and leaves out some of the Windows services. Microsoft claims up to 2GB of memory freed up for games.

What Xbox mode changes, and what it does not fix

Everything is driven with the controller, and the library gathers games from the other stores. But Windows resurfaces regularly: update windows, unreliable wake-ups from sleep. Pocket-lint spoke of a fantastic but unfinished machine. In May 2026, Windows Central was still noting an interface that is slow to start and patchy detection of external controllers.

The 2026 updates

Support for the ROG Xbox Ally X is real. The update of 30 April 2026 improved use on a television: the handheld’s screen switches off once it is connected to a docking station, and Samsung, LG and Vizio televisions switch to game mode by themselves. On the same day, Microsoft opened Xbox mode to other Windows 11 PCs.

Nothing forces you to keep Windows. A trial by video maker Cyber Dopamine under Bazzite, a Linux distribution close to SteamOS, reported by Notebookcheck in October 2025, showed 62 frames per second against 47 under Windows in Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 at 17W. You lose local Game Pass and games with kernel-level anti-cheat in the process. Our page on the Steam Machine explains what SteamOS brings to the living room.

Price and availability: ROG Xbox Ally X price up by €100 in France

The launch price was €899.99 (about 590,000 FCFA). It did not hold. After increases in Japan and then Australia in February 2026, which Asus put down to the cost of memory, the French price rose to €999.99 (about 656,000 FCFA) on the official store, between late February and early June 2026 according to the prices recorded by Xboxygen and Hardware & Co.

In early October 2026, a new ROG Xbox Ally X is listed at €999 (about 655,000 FCFA) at Amazon and Boulanger in France, and at €999.99 at Fnac, which also offers a refurbished unit at €879.99 (about 577,000 FCFA). Promotions do exist: Hardware & Co reported €829.99 (about 544,000 FCFA) in June 2026. The official product page is on the Asus ROG website.

In West and Central Africa: importing, for lack of official distribution

On the continent, the ROG Xbox Ally X was only officially launched in South Africa and Egypt. The South African price was 19,000 rand at release, or around €940 (about 617,000 FCFA) at the exchange rate of the time. In Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal, you have to import from France or go through a specialist reseller, with shipping and customs duties on top. The Asus warranty applies in principle in the country of purchase: keep the invoice.

Two practical points. Big games often weigh 80 to 150GB, which is expensive on a mobile data plan. Game Pass is only offered in a limited list of countries, to be checked on the Xbox website, whereas Steam works everywhere. During power cuts, a 65W Power Delivery power bank keeps the game going.

Against the competition: ROG Xbox Ally X vs Steam Deck OLED and the rest

The Steam Deck OLED was for a long time the sensible option. Valve raised its prices on 28 May 2026: €779 (about 511,000 FCFA) for 512GB and €919 (about 603,000 FCFA) for 1TB. The gap is now only €80 at equal storage. The Deck keeps its OLED screen and a system that holds no surprises. The Asus handheld answers with a much faster chip and Game Pass. Our Switch 2, Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally comparison sets these machines against Nintendo.

The Lenovo Legion Go 2 carries the same chip, with an 8.8-inch OLED screen at 144Hz, 32GB of memory and detachable controllers. It weighs 920g and costs more. The GPD Win 5 bets on a more powerful Ryzen AI Max chip, for an even higher budget.

That leaves the rival from the same house. The X20, unveiled at Computex in June 2026, keeps the same processor, the same memory and the same battery, but moves to a 7.4-inch OLED screen reaching 1,400 nits in HDR, TMR sticks and a convertible D-pad, for 756g. Its French price is announced at €1,399.99 (about 918,000 FCFA). That is €400 more than the ROG Xbox Ally X, for a screen.

Against the ROG Xbox Ally X, the Steam Deck OLED bets on simplicity, the Legion Go 2 on screen size and the GPD Win 5 on power. For emulation and Android games, the Ayaneo Pocket Play costs far less and fits in a pocket.

Conclusion: should you buy the ROG Xbox Ally X in 2026?

Yes, if you find the ROG Xbox Ally X at its former price or below. At around €850 to €900, it is the most accomplished Windows handheld: no other combines this ergonomics, this power and this battery.

At €999.99 without a charger, the sums get tighter. The IPS screen looks dated and Windows still calls for patience. Our opinion of the ROG Xbox Ally X therefore fits in one sentence: an excellent machine, to be bought on promotion or refurbished, not at full price.

Good to know — The arrival of the X20 on 15 October 2026 may shift the prices of the original model in the weeks that follow. If there is no rush, keep an eye on the end-of-year deals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of the ROG Xbox Ally X in France in 2026?

The ROG Xbox Ally X officially costs €999.99 (about 656,000 FCFA) from Asus France, up from €899.99 at launch in October 2025. Fnac also sells a refurbished model at €879.99, and promotions have already brought the new handheld down to around €830. The 65W USB-C charger is not included: allow €49 more.

What is the battery life of the ROG Xbox Ally X in games?

The 80Wh battery of the ROG Xbox Ally X lasts about two hours in a demanding game in Turbo mode, three hours in Performance mode and up to four hours in power-saving mode or in light games, according to measurements by JVTech and Gamergen. Capping the game at 40 or 45 frames per second is the most effective setting for gaining time without degrading the picture.

Can you play your Xbox Series games on the ROG Xbox Ally X?

Not directly. The machine is a Windows 11 PC and does not run Xbox console games natively. Xbox Play Anywhere titles are the exception: a single purchase gives access to both the console and PC versions, with shared saves. For everything else, there is cloud gaming and remote play from your Xbox.

Is the ROG Xbox Ally X the best handheld gaming PC of 2026?

It is the most comfortable and one of the fastest under Windows, but not the best for everyone. The Steam Deck OLED, from €779, remains simpler and offers a better screen. The Asus handheld keeps its ergonomics, Game Pass and anti-cheat games such as Fortnite to itself.

Should you wait for the X20 rather than buy the ROG Xbox Ally X?

Only if the screen is your priority and your budget can follow. The X20 keeps the processor, the memory, the storage and the battery of the current model. It adds a 7.4-inch OLED panel and TMR sticks, for an announced €1,399.99 in France. Performance in games will be identical.
