The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 remains, a year after its release, the easiest pair of smart glasses to recommend: €419 (about 275,000 FCFA), a genuine Ray-Ban frame, a 3K camera and double the battery life. It shows nothing in the lens and depends entirely on the Meta ecosystem, which raises serious privacy questions. It suits people who want to film, listen and question an AI without taking out their phone. The arrival of the Gen 3, expected on 13 October 2026 at €449, changes the sums, however.

Introduction: the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, one year on, facing an announced Gen 3

Meta presented this second generation at its Connect conference on 17 September 2025, with sales starting in France straight afterwards. The official name is “Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2)”. The recipe is still that of the 2023 model, made with EssilorLuxottica: a frame that hides a camera, speakers, microphones and a voice assistant.

The price, though, has moved. The first generation started at €329 (about 216,000 FCFA); the second is listed from €419 (about 275,000 FCFA). That extra €90 mostly pays for the battery and the video. The success is real: in March 2026, Korben mentioned seven million pairs sold the previous year.

The context changed again in late September 2026. At Connect 2026, Meta unveiled a third generation, audio glasses without a camera and the arrival in France of the Meta Ray-Ban Display, the model with a screen. This guide is not based on any hands-on session by our newsroom: it cross-checks Meta’s data, published reviews and press investigations to say what the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is worth today.

Verdict in brief: good camera glasses, to be bought with your eyes open

Verdict in 30 seconds

7.5/10Recommended with caveats

Meta's smart glasses do what they promise well: filming at eye level, playing audio and answering by voice, with battery life that is finally decent. The higher price, the lack of a display and the way Meta handles data mean they cannot be recommended to everyone.

For whom People who film their daily life, travel, or want to listen and make calls without earbuds

Avoid if You refuse to entrust your images to Meta or you expect a display in the lens

We like

  • Doubled battery life, up to a claimed eight hours
  • 3K video and 12-megapixel photos at eye level
  • Genuine Ray-Ban frame, compatible with prescription lenses
  • Live translation and Meta AI available in French

We like less

  • €419 at least, €90 more than the first generation
  • No display in the lens
  • Videos shared with Meta as soon as the AI is used
  • IPX4 protection only, no immersion

Three figures sum up the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. First, the claimed eight hours of battery life, up from four: that was the number one complaint about the first model. Next, 3K video resolution, which replaces 1080p. Finally, the 52 g of a standard-size Wayfarer, a few grams more than an ordinary pair; the chip, the storage and the photo sensor have not changed since 2023.

Design: the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is glasses first, gadget second

The approach has not shifted: from two metres away, nothing sets the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 apart from an ordinary Ray-Ban. The arms are a little thicker, and two small circles flank the lenses, one for the camera, the other for the indicator light. Three shapes are offered: Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner.

Frames, sizes and lenses

The Wayfarer comes in two sizes, and each shape is available in several colours, including glossy limited-edition shades that appeared with this generation. Lenses can be sun, polarised, clear or Transitions photochromic. An Optics version takes prescription lenses, to be ordered from a partner optician or on Ray-Ban’s website.

That choice of lenses weighs on the bill. The €419 price applies to a frame with basic lenses. Expect to pay more for polarised or Transitions lenses, and Optics frames start at €469 (about 308,000 FCFA) according to the figures gathered by the German site Netzwelt, before the prescription.

Comfort and durability

At 51 to 53 g depending on the size, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 weighs around ten grams more than a classic Wayfarer. Buyer reviews aggregated by ShopSavvy mention pressure on the nose after several hours, as the weight is concentrated at the front. It is better to try a pair in a shop.

The IPX4 rating covers splashes and sweat, not swimming or a prolonged downpour. No dust protection is certified. Athletes will be better off looking at the Oakley Meta Vanguard.

Display: nothing shown in the lens, and that is deliberate

There is no screen in the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. The lenses are just lenses, with no projector or waveguide. Everything goes through sound: the assistant answers in your ear, notifications are read aloud, and a click confirms that a photo has been taken.

This choice has concrete advantages. It keeps the weight down, the battery life decent and the price at roughly half that of display glasses.

The trade-off is obvious: you cannot frame a photo, read a message or follow directions without taking out your phone. Only a small internal LED, visible to the wearer, signals the status of the glasses. If you want text in your field of view, the Meta Ray-Ban Display is the one to look at, and for full immersion a headset like Valve’s Steam Frame.

Performance: chip, AI and audio, what these glasses really do

The hardware platform is familiar: a Qualcomm Snapdragon AR1 Gen 1 chip, designed for glasses, and 32 GB of internal storage. Transfers to the phone run over Wi-Fi through the app.

Meta AI in France: what works, what is missing

On the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, the assistant is woken with “Hey Meta” or with a press on the arm. In France, it has answered general questions in French since late 2024. Since April 2025, it has also been able to analyse what the camera sees: identifying a monument, translating a menu, converting a displayed price.

Live translation is the most useful feature when travelling. It handles six languages: French, English, Italian, Spanish, German and Portuguese. Language packs can be downloaded to work offline, a real asset when your data plan is limited.

Not everything has reached Europe, though. Live AI mode, which lets the assistant watch continuously without repeating the wake word, was launched in the United States and Canada. Its availability in France was not confirmed by the sources consulted. The same caution applies to the Muse agent, announced with the Gen 3.

Audio and calls

The two open speakers on the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 play music, podcasts and calls without blocking your ears. WWWhat’s New, a Spanish site that published its review in April 2026, notes fuller bass and less sound leaking to people nearby than before.

The five microphones pick up the voice well on calls, according to published feedback. The Conversation Focus feature, presented with this generation, amplifies the voice of the person you are talking to in a noisy place. Its rollout began in North America and remains to be checked for France.

What the glasses cannot do

  • Stream live anywhere other than Instagram and Facebook: no Zoom, Teams or FaceTime.
  • Film for long: each clip is limited to three minutes.
  • Work without a phone: the assistant and file transfers go through the app.
  • Display anything at all: no viewfinder, no visual notification, no directions.

Camera: a 12-megapixel sensor at eye level for photo and video

The camera is the reason to buy the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2. The 12-megapixel ultra-wide sensor is the same as on the first generation, but video processing has improved.

3K video: the available modes

Three settings are offered: 3K at 30 frames per second, 1440p at 30 frames per second, or 1200p at 60 frames per second for smoother motion. Vertical framing remains the norm. Hyperlapse and slow-motion modes were promised through an update after launch.

Published reviews praise the stabilisation and the daylight results. WWWhat’s New considers the footage good enough to be posted as it is on Instagram. The three-minute limit per clip is a reminder that this is not an action camera.

Photo: handy by day, limited at night

For photos, the point of view is the whole appeal: you photograph what you see, hands-free, with a press on the button on the right arm or by voice. The small sensor shows its limits in dark interiors and at night, where digital noise appears quickly. With no viewfinder, framing stays approximate.

Battery life: the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 claims eight hours, four in heavy use

Meta claims up to eight hours of mixed use for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, double the previous generation. L’Éclaireur Fnac specifies that this figure drops to about five hours of continuous audio listening or calls.

Reviews add further nuance. WWWhat’s New records about four hours when AI, photo and audio are used without a break, and a full day in light use. Enough to last a day of sightseeing, not a long shoot.

Case and charging

The faux-leather case doubles as a power bank. It provides 48 hours of extra battery life, up from 32 hours before, and charges over USB-C. Twenty minutes in the case is enough to bring the glasses back to 50%.

Good to know — the battery in the glasses cannot be replaced by the user. As with wireless earbuds, its capacity will drop over the years, which limits the lifespan of a product costing more than €400.

Software: the Meta AI app, an unavoidable step

The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is set up with the Meta AI app, which replaced Meta View, on Android and iPhone alike. A Meta account is essential. The app imports photos and videos, sets the capture quality, manages connected services and installs updates.

Ongoing support is the upside of this dependence. Meta adds features several times a year: translation, music recognition with Shazam, voice control of Spotify and Apple Music, then WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram messages and calls. No subscription is required.

The integration has its limits: the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 reads messages and places calls, but replaces neither Siri nor Gemini. And new features almost always arrive in the United States first.

Privacy: the real issue with the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2

Wearing a camera on your nose is no small matter, for you or for other people. Two questions arise: what Meta does with your images, and what those around you know about the recording.

What Meta does with your images

In early March 2026, the Swedish dailies Svenska Dagbladet and Göteborgs-Posten revealed that employees of Sama, a Meta subcontractor in Kenya, were viewing footage from the glasses to train the AI. According to the investigation, some of it showed intimate scenes or bank details, and automatic blurring failed in 15 to 20% of cases.

Meta replied that its terms provide for human review of interactions with Meta AI, after filtering. The British regulator, the ICO, has opened an inquiry, two lawsuits have been filed in the United States, and Kenya’s data protection commissioner launched his own in early April 2026, according to We Are Tech Africa and Osiris.

The rule to remember: a photo or video that is simply stored stays on the glasses and the phone, but everything you show the assistant goes to Meta’s servers. Go through the app’s privacy settings as soon as you install it, and avoid questioning the AI in a private setting.

Filming other people: the LED is not enough

A white light comes on at the front during capture, and the glasses refuse to record if it is covered. WWWhat’s New nevertheless finds this indicator almost invisible in full sun, and the gesture that triggers recording too discreet for the person opposite to notice.

In France, image rights and the GDPR apply: filming someone without their consent and then publishing the footage exposes you to legal action. Facial recognition, which more than 75 organisations are asking Meta to abandon according to the same source, is not offered on these glasses in Europe to date. As a courtesy, take them off in a changing room or a doctor’s surgery.

Availability in France and Europe: the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 price

In France, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is sold from €419 (about 275,000 FCFA) on Meta’s website, on Ray-Ban’s, in the brand’s shops and at partner opticians. In the United States, it starts at $379 before tax, or about €349 (229,000 FCFA).

The 2025 launch added Switzerland and the Netherlands to the list of countries served, as detailed in Meta’s press release. The first generation is still on sale at a reduced price, around €250 at some European retailers.

Sales go first and foremost through Meta, Ray-Ban and opticians. Availability at the big online retailers varies from one period to the next: always check the identity of the seller and the generation stated on the listing. Refurbished units circulate at between €340 and €440 on specialist sites.

In West and Central Africa: imports, warranty and features

Meta does not sell the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. You have to buy in Europe, go through a relative or use a local reseller, which adds shipping and customs duties to the base price. The two-year warranty only applies in the country of purchase, and there is no repair centre locally.

Photo, video, music and calls work everywhere over Bluetooth. The assistant, on the other hand, depends on the countries where Meta has switched it on: find out before buying if that is your priority. Bear in mind too that the IPX4 rating offers no protection against dry-season dust.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 or Gen 3: should you wait?

The Gen 3 was announced at Connect 2026, in late September. According to KultureGeek, the Journal du Geek and the Blog Nouvelles Technologies, it will be sold at €449 (about 295,000 FCFA) from 13 October 2026.

It keeps the 12-megapixel camera and 3K video. The changes are elsewhere: a claimed nine hours of battery life, six microphones said to cut ambient noise by 90%, a customisable action button, dynamic photos and new Aviator and Zena shapes. Dolby Atmos spatial audio is promised for later.

The gap is only €30. At equal list prices, the Gen 3 is therefore the one to pick, especially if you often make calls in noisy places. The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 keeps the edge if you are set on the Skyler or Headliner shapes, or if its price drops. Meta also presented the Ray-Ban Meta Audio, without a camera, at €349 (about 229,000 FCFA), which weighs 43 g.

Good to know — as of 3 October 2026, Meta is keeping the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 at €419. A discount after 13 October is possible, though not announced: waiting two weeks costs nothing.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 review round-up: what published tests conclude

The Display adds a screen and a control wristband, for almost double the price. Valve’s headset is aimed at gaming, not the street. And if your goal is to look at your phone less, a minimalist handset like the Light Phone III deals with the problem at its root.

Conclusion: should you buy the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 in late 2026?

Yes, if you know why you are buying it. For filming a trip or a recipe without holding a phone, or for listening to a podcast with your ears free, the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 does the job very well. Battery life, the weak spot of 2023, no longer is one.

No, if you expect an assistant that changes your daily life or a display in the lens. No again if the idea of entrusting your images to Meta bothers you: the March 2026 investigation showed that the question is anything but theoretical.

Our pick

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 — a good buy provided you find it below its list price of €419 (about 275,000 FCFA) after the Gen 3 comes out. At full price, the extra €30 for the new model is money better spent.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 cost in France?

The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 price starts at €419 (about 275,000 FCFA) for a Wayfarer, Skyler or Headliner frame with basic lenses. Polarised or Transitions lenses cost more, and Optics frames for prescription lenses start at €469, without the prescription. The first generation was sold at €329 when it launched.

How long does the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 battery last?

Meta claims up to eight hours of mixed use, twice as long as the previous generation. For continuous audio listening or calls, expect closer to five hours, and around four hours if you string together videos and questions to the AI, according to published reviews. The case adds 48 hours and charges the glasses to 50% in twenty minutes.

Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 or Gen 3: which should you choose?

The Gen 3, announced in late September 2026 and expected on 13 October at €449, adds an hour of battery life, six microphones, an action button and new shapes. The camera stays the same. For a €30 difference, it is the better choice at list price. The 2025 generation becomes attractive if it is discounted, or if you prefer the Skyler and Headliner frames.

Do Meta’s smart glasses work in West and Central Africa?

The Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is not officially sold there, but it works once imported: photo, video, music and calls go through the phone’s Bluetooth, with the Meta AI app on Android or iPhone. Availability of the voice assistant depends on the country and the account, and is worth checking before buying. The warranty stays tied to the country of purchase.
