If you’re having problems with your Sony WF-1000XM4 wireless headphones, the solutions are probably in this guide, so read on.

After all, Sony makes excellent wireless headphones that rival and even beat Apple’s AirPods. But no work is perfect, so one of the following faults is likely to occur. Here’s how to fix it.

1. You can hear the wind blowing hard through the headphones

The noise reduction feature of these headphones should be good enough that you can’t hear outside noise. But when a really strong wind blows by, it may be louder depending on the environment.

If this is the case, open the Sony | Headphones Connect application and tap Sound >Ambient Sound Control >Auto Wind Noise Reduction.

If you are bothered by wind noise, even with Automatic Wind Noise Reduction enabled, set the Noise Cancellation function and the Ambient Noise mode to OFF.

2. Sony WF-1000XM4 earphones do not produce sound or only one earphone produces sound

If the sound does not come out of your Sony WF-1000XM4 earphones, or if the sound is interrupted, put the earphones back in their case and close them. Wait a few minutes, then remove them and pair them with your phone, tablet or computer again.

You can also check that the volume of your music is sufficient. So make sure the volume is high enough on the device that is playing music; or even that music is playing and you have not paused it.

Another possibility is that the music playing application you are using is not well supported. Play your music with an application to find out for sure.

Also check that your headphones are properly linked to your device and that the Bluetooth connection is secure.

If you’ve done all the above checks and your headphones still don’t produce sound, you need to charge them.

Place them in the charging case, close it and connect it to a power outlet or computer using the USB Type-C cable provided.

Once charging is complete, pair the headphones with your phone and try listening to music.

If it still doesn’t work, reset the headphones. Instructions for resetting the headphones can be found at the end of this article.

3. My Sony WF-1000XM4 earphones don’t fit properly

Wearing your headphones is very important for sound quality, noise cancelling and call quality. The better your earphones are worn, the better these features are used.

To wear your headphones correctly, select the most appropriate ear tips for your ears.

If the earphone tips do not fit your ear canals, or if the earphones are not worn properly on your ears, you may not get the right sound performance.

To wear the Sony WF-1000XM4 earphones, pull slightly on the top of your ears, place the earphone tips in your ear canal, and twist the earphones into place. This will ensure that the earphones are properly and firmly seated in the ear canal.

Wait about 10 seconds for the shape of the earphone nozzle to stabilize, then check to see if they fit in your ears and if the noise cancelling effect is sufficient. If you feel that the earphone tips do not fit your ears as you would like, or if the noise cancelling effect is not sufficient, remove and reinsert the earphones, making sure that the earphone tips fit your ears perfectly.

To be sure you have put your earphones in correctly, feel free to measure the air tightness of the earphone tips.

4. I can’t adjust the volume on my Sony WF-1000XM4 headphones

If you can’t adjust the volume of your headphones on your smartphone, use the touch sensor on the headphones to adjust it.

Press the touch sensor once to increase the volume. To decrease the volume, press and hold your finger on the touch sensor until it drops to the desired level.

If the volume cannot be adjusted until then, use the Sony Headphones Connect application to adjust the volume. Open the application and move the slider next to the speaker icon in the Status tab.

This should solve your problem.

If not, reset the headphones. Instructions on how to do this can be found at the bottom of this article.

5. The charging indicator on the case flashes red during wireless charging

This can happen because the wireless charger becomes too hot due to improper charging or the temperature of the environment where you are charging. This is an alarming sign because the temperature inside the charging box is too high. The charge should stop automatically to protect the battery. All you have to do is remove the charging case from the wireless charging cradle, allow it to cool to room temperature, and restart charging.

When you put your headphones on wireless charging, make sure the charging case is aligned with the wireless charging cradle.

6. Sony WF-1000XM4 headphones make a strange noise

You can try to solve this problem by updating the headset software.

When noise cancellation or ambient sound control is enabled, vibrations from walking or running may be transmitted through your body and cause noise. To avoid this, turn off noise cancellation or ambient sound control.

If you hear a cracking or popping sound during or when inserting the earphones into your ears, this is because the air bubbles inside the earcups are being crushed. This is normal.

Again, check that the earphones are securely attached to your ears. If they are not, the quality of phone calls and noise cancellation may be reduced.

7. Sony WF-1000XM4: Noise cancelling function does not work and you hear white noise during a call

The noise cancelling function is less effective during a call than during music playback.

During a call on the headset, the headset microphones pick up ambient sound regardless of the setting of the ambient sound control function. This is an effect of the Sidetone feature, which allows your voice to be heard naturally and makes conversation more comfortable during the call. Therefore, the noise cancellation function works differently from music playback.

If you hear ambient sound, headset operating noise or white noise from the headset, this is also an effect of the Sidetone function, not a failure.

How to reset Sony WF-1000XM4 headphones

Initializing your headphones will remove all settings from your headphones, but will solve many problems. After initialising the headphones, you must delete them from your phone in the Bluetooth menu.

To initialise your Sony WF-1000XM4 headset:

  1. Make sure the headphone case is fully charged
  2. Place the earphones in the charging case.
  3. Hold your fingers on the touch sensors of both earphones for about 10 seconds.
  4. When you see the red light on the charging case flashing, wait 3 seconds and then remove your fingers from the earphones.
  5. The green light on the charging case will flash 4 times when your earphones are initialized.

It is very important to remove your fingers from the earphones within 5 seconds of the red flashes or the earphones will not initialize. If you have missed this step, you can start again from the beginning.
