iOS 26: The Most Common Bugs and How to Fix Them
Since launch, iOS 26 and its Liquid Glass interface have run into a string of bugs that have earned Apple around ten successive patches. While we wait for the next update (iOS 26.6 is expected in mid-July 2026), a few annoyances keep coming back: app icons that disappear, Face ID that stops working in third-party apps, lost favorites in Maps, and a camera that refuses to launch. Here, problem by problem, are the concrete fixes to apply.
1. App Icons Have Disappeared From the Home Screen
Don’t worry: in the vast majority of cases the app isn’t uninstalled, just hidden or moved. Work through this in order:

- Search for the app: swipe down in the middle of the Home Screen to open Spotlight search, then type its name. If it shows up, it’s still installed.
- Look in the App Library: swipe to the last Home Screen page. The icon may have been moved there; press and hold it, then choose Add to Home Screen.
- Turn off automatic offloading: in Settings → General → iPhone Storage, an “offloaded” app keeps a greyed-out icon with a cloud. To prevent this, go to Settings → App Store → Offload Unused Apps and turn it off.
- Check for hidden pages: press and hold an empty area of the Home Screen, tap the page dots at the bottom, and re-tick any pages that were unchecked.
- If nothing works, restart the iPhone. As a last resort, Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Home Screen Layout.
2. Face ID No Longer Works in Third-Party Apps
Face ID unlocks your iPhone but fails in a banking app or password manager? The permission setting has often been reset after the update.
- Go to Settings → Face ID & Passcode, Other Apps section: make sure the app is enabled. Toggle it off and back on.
- Update the app from the App Store: developers ship compatibility fixes for iOS 26.
- Make sure nothing is blocking the TrueDepth camera (a poorly fitting case, an oversized screen protector, a finger over the notch).
- Set up an alternate appearance (Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Set Up an Alternate Appearance) to make recognition more reliable.
- If the problem persists, reset Face ID (same menu → Reset Face ID) and set it up again.
3. Maps Has Lost Your Favorites and Saved Places
Maps favorites sync via iCloud; a desync after an update can make them “disappear” temporarily.
- Check that sync is on: Settings → [your name] → iCloud → See All, and make sure Maps is enabled.
- Confirm you’re signed in with the correct Apple ID, the one your favorites originate from.
- Make sure date and time are set to automatic (Settings → General → Date & Time): a wrong clock blocks iCloud sync.
- Give iCloud time to resync (a few minutes to a few hours on a good Wi-Fi connection). Avoid recreating your favorites in the meantime, or you’ll end up with duplicates.
- If it’s stuck, sign out and back in to iCloud (a sensitive step: back up first).
4. The Camera Won’t Launch or Freezes
A black screen on opening, an app that freezes, a shutter that stops responding: these symptoms often have a simple software cause.
- Force close the Camera app (swipe it up from the app switcher) then reopen it.
- Restart the iPhone: it’s the most effective fix for a sensor that seems “stuck.”
- Free up storage if space is nearly full: with no room to save, the app may refuse to start.
- Test from another app (open the camera from Messages): if that works, the issue is with the Camera app, not the sensor.
- Remove an overly bulky case or a lens accessory, which can disrupt focus and crash the launch.
- As a last resort, Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset All Settings (your data is kept).
The Reflex That Fixes Many Bugs: Update
Many of these annoyances are fixed by iOS 26’s successive updates. Install the latest available version via Settings → General → Software Update. If your model is especially unstable, it can be reasonable to hold off on non-critical updates and wait for a version the community considers stable before installing it.
What It Means for You
The good news is that almost all of these iOS 26 bugs can be solved without a repair shop: a setting to re-enable, an app to update, a restart, or a little patience for iCloud sync. Keep the habit of backing up regularly (iCloud or computer) before every major update: it’s your best insurance against nasty surprises.
