The world of laptops is evolving at an extraordinary speed, with manufacturers keeping pace with the new components regularly offered by AMD, Nvidia or Intel. Of the most powerful categories of computers, after supercomputers one immediately thinks of the so-called gamer computers.

Asus is keeping up with the pace with its brand new Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 SE, which is simply the most powerful in terms of performance. The cohabitation of the latest Intel processors and Nvidia graphics cards offers a detonating cocktail for video games, applications and content creation.

With its 17.3-inch screen format with a density of 170ppp and an aspect ratio of 16:9, the Strict Scar 17 SE has an HD LED display that offers a comfortable diagonal and two different definition options: either WQHD (2560×1440) at 240 Hz or Full HD (1920×1080) at 360 Hz. The high refresh rate, well above the standard 60Hz, will be of particular interest to gamers. It guarantees a much smoother gameplay, especially since the latency is reduced to 3ms.

The screen also delivers better-than-average colour fidelity with wide vertical and horizontal viewing angles thanks to its sRGB and IPS features.  The screen also offers better visibility in bright environments (e.g. outdoors) than a glossy panel and is more restful for the eyes during prolonged use.

Asus gamer laptops are known for their unique and impressive design, and this is confirmed by the Strix Scar 17, which is dark with angular lines and partly rear-mounted connectivity. This versatile notebook for gamers and creative people that can be recharged by 50% in 30 minutes has an original gamer look.

It is cooled by Asus ROG Intelligent Cooling technology using 2 Arc Flow fans (84 blades, 0.1mm), liquid metal thermal paste, heat pipes and vents, for a maximum claimed generated noise below 40dB in performance mode.  There is also a vapour chamber that covers “48.8% of the motherboard” and four heat sinks.

The connectivity is composed of 2 USB-C ports including 1 Thunderbolt 4, Bluetooth 5.2 and Wi-Fi 6E ax wireless modules (more recent and efficient than Wi-Fi ac) to communicate and connect remotely, a practical HDMI video output to easily connect this PC to a TV or monitor for example, Ethernet and audio ports but also 2 USB 3.0 (USB 2.0 compatible) guaranteeing transfers up to 10 times faster than USB 2.0 if you connect USB 3.0 peripherals. Of course, the keyboard keys can be backlit, which is useful for making them easier to see in the dark.

The Asus ROG Strix Scar 17 G733ZW-KH116W may appeal to those wishing to purchase a versatile, full-size laptop, as it is designed to be ultra high-end, with the latest and best components. The overall power provided is incomparable with the vast majority of models on the market, as it is built around one of the most powerful processors of the moment, the Core i9-12900HX.

Meaning that processing with this core is much faster than with a conventional Quad/Hexa/Octo Core. The difference can be felt in CPU- and RAM-intensive jobs that use all 16 cores of the Alder Lake-HX. This is the case, for example, in video editing, 3D rendering or photo editing.

The GeForce RTX 3070 Ti or 3080 Ti dedicated graphics card on board accelerates processing under software that takes advantage of GPU computing power, such as Adobe Premiere/Photoshop or Sony Vegas. As needed, Optimus actually switches automatically and in real time between the Iris Xe graphics solution in the Core i9 and the GeForce RTX 3070 Ti. The latter is activated by NVIDIA Optimus technology to carry out graphics processing that is deemed too heavy for the Intel Iris Xe.

As for RAM, the Strix Scar 17 SE has 16GB but can be upgraded to 64GB and opts for the very fast DDR5-4800, plus up to 1TB of PCIe 4.0 SSD storage. In short, speed everywhere.

Of course, having the best of the best comes with a hefty price tag, and you may not be ready for the latest marvel. However, there are also good alternatives to Asus gaming that would be perfect for your needs and fit your budget.
