Sony has confirmed that the Xperia 10 VI will not get Android 17, even though three major Android upgrades were promised when it launched in 2024. The news surfaced around October 14 and was covered by Droid-Life and Born City, and GSMArena noted it on October 16.

After a detailed technical assessment, Sony says the phone cannot deliver an Android 17 experience it considers adequate. The company points to the phone’s storage configuration; Born City describes memory limitations. Sony apologized and acknowledged that the decision falls short of its original announcement. According to Sony, other Xperia models are unaffected.

The original promise

The Xperia 10 VI launched in 2024 on Android 14, with a Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 chip, 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Sony then promised three major OS upgrades and four years of security updates. Android 17 would have been the third and last, so support ends earlier than advertised, with Android 16 as the final version. Born City notes the phone had already been missing from Sony’s official roadmap in September.

What about security patches?

Good news here: nothing changes. Sony says security updates will continue for four years from the phone’s launch. You keep the protection but miss out on what Android 17 brings.

What you can do

If you own an Xperia 10 VI, you do not have to do anything: the phone remains usable on Android 16 with its patches. If software longevity matters for your next purchase, compare manufacturers’ written update commitments before you buy, and remember that a promise only counts when it is kept.

This affects a single model, but it feeds the debate over how reliable update promises are on budget phones. Does this change affect you? Let us know in the comments.
