Xiaomi has officially revealed the design of its Xiaomi 18 Fold and confirmed its announcement date: September 7 in China, two days before the keynote at which Apple is expected to unveil its own foldable. The timing is no accident. Lu Weibing, president of the company’s smartphone division, published the first official renders on Weibo, showing a device in a format new to the brand and powered by Xiaomi’s in-house XRing O3 chip. Here is everything we know.

A “mid-fold” format between the book and the clamshell

Xiaomi is using a new term to describe its device: the mid-fold. The idea is to bridge the gap between two established categories. On one side, book-style foldables such as the Galaxy Z Fold, which open into a small tablet but stay tall and narrow when closed. On the other, clamshell models, compact but fitted with a conventional inner display.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold takes a third route. It carries a 5.38-inch cover display and a 7.58-inch inner panel. The proportions are therefore wider and squarer than on a traditional book foldable: folded, the device looks like a short, wide smartphone rather than a thick block.

The format is not entirely new to the market. Huawei explored it with its wide foldables, and Samsung has seen notable success with the wide version of its Galaxy Z Fold 8. Apple is expected on the same ground with the iPhone Ultra. The segment, long a niche, is filling up fast.

Design: horizontal camera island, “dragon bone” hinge and a red finish

The visuals released by Xiaomi show a clean back crossed by a horizontal, pill-shaped camera module housing three sensors and an LED flash. That is a notable point of difference: most wide foldables on the market settle for one or two sensors, for lack of room in such a thin chassis.

The corners are heavily rounded, the display bezels slim, and the highlighted colour is a deep red the brand presents as Nishino Red. The hinge, which Xiaomi calls “dragon bone”, is meant to reduce the crease while withstanding repeated opening and closing.

A leak from Digital Chat Station, to be treated with the usual caution, adds technical detail: a side-mounted fingerprint reader and a Leica Summilux triple-camera system made up of an f/1.7 main sensor, an f/2.8 telephoto with 3.5x optical zoom, and a 17 mm equivalent ultra-wide. If confirmed, that telephoto would be a serious argument against rivals who often sacrifice zoom in this format.

XRing O3: Xiaomi bets on its own silicon

The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be the brand’s first foldable powered by the XRing O3, the processor Xiaomi designed in house. The company had confirmed the choice in advance and is clearly making it a selling point.

The specifications announced by Xiaomi are ambitious. The XRing O3 is a 10-core processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.35 GHz. It is paired with a 16-core graphics unit called G2-Ultra NX. According to the manufacturer, this new GPU delivers an 85 percent performance improvement while cutting power consumption by 64 percent compared with the previous generation.

These figures come from the maker and will need independent testing. They nonetheless reflect a deliberate strategy: like Apple and like Samsung with its Exynos line, Xiaomi is working to reduce its dependence on Qualcomm and MediaTek processors. A high-end foldable is the best vehicle for proving that an in-house chip can handle the most demanding thermal and graphical loads.

The September 7 event will not be limited to the smartphone. Xiaomi is expected to take the opportunity to introduce the Pad 9 Pro Max tablet, also anticipated with the XRing O3.

Why Xiaomi picked September 7

Two days ahead of Apple: the coincidence is too neat to be accidental. Apple holds its keynote on September 9, and the foldable iPhone Ultra is expected to be the headline product of the autumn.

By presenting its device first, Xiaomi gains the symbolic benefit of going first in this wide format, and occupies the media space just before global attention shifts to Cupertino. The move has limits: the Xiaomi 18 Fold is announced for China, and nothing guarantees at this stage that it will be sold in Europe.

The scope of that “lead” should also be kept in perspective. Apple is launching its very first foldable, while Xiaomi is already several generations into flexible-display devices. The two companies are not playing the same game: one has to prove it masters a format that is new to it, the other that it can compete outside its domestic market.

What this changes for you

If you follow the foldable market closely, keep three points in mind.

  • The wide format is gaining ground. Between Huawei, Samsung, Xiaomi and soon Apple, four major players are pushing the same idea. That means more choice, and eventually downward pressure on prices.
  • European availability remains uncertain. Xiaomi sells part of its Chinese range internationally, but not all of it, and rarely straight away. Do not expect this model in European stores in the coming weeks.
  • In-house chips are maturing. The XRing O3 is worth watching beyond this single device: if Xiaomi delivers on performance and efficiency, it reshuffles the cards across its entire range.

In short

The Xiaomi 18 Fold will be introduced on September 7 in China with a 5.38-inch cover display, a 7.58-inch inner panel, a “dragon bone” hinge, a triple camera and the in-house 10-core XRing O3 processor. An aggressive move, forty-eight hours before Apple’s keynote.
