  17. Frequently asked questions

The iPhone 17 Pro is no longer the newest iPhone, and that is exactly what makes it interesting in late 2026. Apple dropped it from its line-up on 9 September, when its successor arrived, but retailers still list it new at around €1,229 (about 806,000 FCFA), down from €1,329 at launch. Its A19 Pro chip, its three 48 MP sensors and its battery life still sit among the best. For anyone who refuses to pay €1,479 for the new model, it is now the most rational buy in the Pro range, provided you aim for the right price.

Introduction: the iPhone 17 Pro, a former flagship turned bargain

Apple unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro on 9 September 2025 and put it on sale ten days later. It introduced a one-piece aluminium chassis, a wide camera bar and vapour chamber cooling. A year later, the keynote of 9 September 2026 pushed it out of the catalogue, like every Pro model before it.

Apple no longer sells it and is letting stock run down at its distributors. In France, Fnac, Darty and Cdiscount list it at €1,229 with 256 GB, according to the price tracking done by Consomac in early October. The new model starts at €1,479 (about 970,000 FCFA), which is €250 more for the same capacity.

What is the iPhone 17 Pro still worth, and for whom? It suits the owner of an iPhone 13, 14 or 15 who wants the comfort of a Pro model without swallowing the 2026 price rise. Our analysis draws on the official specifications and on the reviews published over the past year, as the editorial team has not tried the device.

Three figures matter in the iPhone 17 Pro spec sheet. First, the 12 GB of RAM: that is the threshold at which Apple Intelligence runs comfortably, with headroom left for the next versions of iOS. Then the battery, 3,998 mAh on the European version with a SIM tray according to GSMArena, which means 31 hours of video playback according to Apple’s official spec page. Finally the telephoto, which has gone from 12 to 48 MP and allows an 8x crop of decent quality.

iPhone 17 Pro design: aluminium, camera bar and 206 g

A one-piece chassis

Apple has given up titanium for forged aluminium, machined from a single piece. The choice is thermal before it is aesthetic: aluminium conducts heat better and works together with the vapour chamber housed under the shell. The back gets a Ceramic Shield insert around the MagSafe area, the front a Ceramic Shield 2 with an anti-reflective coating.

The camera bar spans the full width of the phone. Laid flat on a table, the handset no longer rocks when you tap on it.

Ergonomics and durability

The iPhone 17 Pro measures 150 × 71.9 × 8.75 mm and weighs 206 g. That is heavier than the previous generation, the price to pay for a bigger battery. The 6.3-inch format remains one of the few true flagships you can use with one hand, where Android rivals often go beyond 6.7 inches.

The IP68 rating promises immersion down to 6 metres for 30 minutes. Between sudden downpours and dust, that is real peace of mind in Douala or Abidjan, even though Apple’s warranty does not cover liquid damage.

Marks on the aluminium: a point to watch

From the very first weeks, users and several media outlets reported marks on the edges of the camera bar, especially on the deep blue colour. If you are buying second-hand or refurbished, inspect that area before anything else. A case solves the problem.

Display: 6.3 inches, 120 Hz and an effective anti-reflective coating

An OLED panel with no surprises, and so much the better

The Super Retina XDR panel of the iPhone 17 Pro shows 2,622 × 1,206 pixels, or 460 pixels per inch. The refresh rate varies from 1 to 120 Hz, which allows the always-on display without draining the battery. Apple quotes 1,000 nits in everyday use, 1,600 nits in HDR and up to 3,000 nits in direct sunlight.

Fnac’s test lab gives it the maximum score for brightness and colour accuracy. Under the Central African sun, the 3,000-nit peak and the anti-reflective coating make the difference when it comes to reading a map or framing a photo.

What the new model changes

The successor keeps the same diagonal and the same resolution. Its main change is a smaller Dynamic Island, made possible by moving Face ID components under the screen. On the display itself, the iPhone 17 Pro has nothing to envy it.

Performance: the A19 Pro still holds its own against 2026 chips

A 3 nm chip and 12 GB of RAM

The A19 Pro combines six CPU cores, six graphics cores and a sixteen-core neural engine. Fnac’s lab gave it 10 out of 10 in every one of its usage scenarios. The A20 Pro chip in the new model, built on a 2 nm process, promises 20% more computing power and 40% more graphics performance according to Apple. Those gains are barely noticeable day to day.

Gaming and heat: the vapour chamber changes things

This is the clearest step forward of the iPhone 17 Pro over its predecessor. Wired and Fnac both note much better heat dissipation during long gaming sessions. In a city where it is 32 °C in the shade, that argument carries more weight than a benchmark score.

Network and connectivity

The iPhone 17 Pro carries Apple’s N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, and a Qualcomm modem for 5G. The version sold in France takes one nano SIM and one eSIM. The USB-C port reaches 10 Gbps, which is useful for recording straight to an external SSD.

Camera: three 48 MP sensors and the best video on the market

Wide, ultra-wide and 4x telephoto

The three rear modules of the iPhone 17 Pro share the same 48 MP resolution. The main camera opens at f/1.78 at 24 mm, the ultra-wide at f/2.2 at 13 mm, and the prism telephoto reaches 100 mm at f/2.8. By cropping into the centre of the sensor, Apple offers a 12 MP 8x mode, equivalent to 200 mm.

DXOMARK gave it 168 points, with 175 for the main module and 141 for the telephoto. The lab praises exposure and dynamic range, but notes a loss of detail at intermediate zoom levels and a telephoto that falls behind at long range against Chinese periscope lenses.

At night: mixed opinions

The reviews do not entirely agree. DXOMARK puts the phone at the top of its night photography ranking, while pointing out noise in low light. Fnac, with a stricter protocol, gives the main sensor only 4.3 out of 10 in the dark. CNET observes that the 8x zoom becomes noisy as soon as the light drops. Expect natural, well-exposed night shots, with no miracle from the telephoto.

Video and selfies: where it dominates

Video remains the home ground of the iPhone 17 Pro. DXOMARK gives it 172 points in this discipline, with the best stabilisation measured at the time of its release. The phone shoots 4K at 120 frames per second in Dolby Vision and records in ProRes RAW as well as Apple Log 2.

The 18 MP front camera uses a square sensor. It frames in portrait or landscape without you having to turn the phone, and simultaneous front and rear capture is a real asset for content creators. The variable aperture of the new model, from f/1.48 to f/4, adds control over depth of field without transforming image quality.

Battery life and charging: a real full day, a recharge that takes its time

The published measurements

Apple quotes 31 hours of video playback for the iPhone 17 Pro with a SIM tray. Tom’s Guide measured 15 hours 32 minutes of continuous browsing, against 14 hours 7 minutes for the iPhone 16 Pro. Fnac records 20 hours 1 minute on its mixed protocol. These figures place the iPhone 17 Pro among the good performers of its size, though far behind the 7,000 mAh batteries of recent Chinese models.

illustration-recharge-4 iPhone 17 Pro: specs, price and review in late 2026
Illustrative photo, unrelated to the product shown. Credit: rawpixel (CC0).

Charging: 50% in 20 minutes, a full charge in 1 hour 30

With an adapter of 40 W or more, Apple promises 50% in 20 minutes. A full charge takes about 1 hour 30 minutes according to Fnac. MagSafe wireless charging goes up to 25 W. No charger comes in the box: plan for a good-quality USB-C Power Delivery brick rather than an unprotected market-stall charger.

Good to know — A second-hand iPhone shows the condition of its battery in Settings, Battery, Battery Health. Below 85% maximum capacity on a device less than a year old, negotiate the price or walk away.

Software: iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence, what actually works in Europe

iOS 27 on the iPhone 17 Pro

The iPhone 17 Pro shipped with iOS 26 and has been receiving iOS 27 since mid-September 2026. This version bets on speed: Apple says apps launch 30% faster and photos load more quickly. It adds a transparency slider for the Liquid Glass interface and a smoother handover between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

Apple Intelligence in Europe

Apple Intelligence has been available in the European Union, French included, since spring 2025. You get the writing tools, notification summaries, Clean Up photo retouching, visual intelligence through the camera and, with iOS 27, spatial reframing and image extension in Photos.

The sore point is Siri. The new conversational version, the centrepiece of iOS 27, is not offered in the European Union at launch, and it starts out in English. Apple cites the Digital Markets Act and gives no firm date.

How many years of updates?

Apple does not promise a set number of years the way Samsung or Google do. The brand commits to a minimum of five years of security fixes, and its phones usually receive six to seven major versions of iOS. The iPhone 17 Pro should therefore stay up to date until at least 2031.

iPhone 17 Pro vs iPhone 18 Pro: what really changes

Here are the differences that matter, based on Apple’s official spec pages and the comparisons published since the keynote.

  • Chip: A20 Pro on a 2 nm process against A19 Pro on 3 nm, meaning 20% more computing power and 40% more graphics performance according to Apple.
  • Camera: variable aperture from f/1.48 to f/4 on the main sensor of the new model, fixed f/1.78 aperture on the old one.
  • Battery life: 34 hours of video playback quoted, against 31 hours.
  • Network: Apple-designed C2 modem against a Qualcomm modem.
  • Storage: a 2 TB version appears, while the older model tops out at 1 TB.
  • Price: €1,479 against €1,229 at retailers, for the same capacity.

The rest is identical or nearly so: same format, same 6.3-inch display, same 4x telephoto, same 18 MP front camera. If the variable aperture or the 2 TB option appeals to you, read our iPhone 18 Pro page. If what you want above all is a large screen and more stamina, look at the iPhone 18 Pro Max. In every other case, keep your €250.

iPhone 17 Pro price and availability: France, refurbished, Africa

In France: €1,229 new, sometimes less

Launch prices were €1,329 for 256 GB, €1,579 for 512 GB and €1,829 for 1 TB. In early October 2026, the big French retailers list the 256 GB model at €1,229 (about 806,000 FCFA) and the 512 GB at €1,479 (about 970,000 FCFA). Amazon already offered it at €1,129 (about 741,000 FCFA) in August, according to LesMobiles.

Our advice: below €1,150, the iPhone 17 Pro is a buy without hesitation. Above €1,300, the new model is the better choice. New stock will not be replenished.

Refurbished iPhone 17 Pro: from €982

The comparison site RefurbMe finds a lowest price of €982 (about 644,000 FCFA) for 256 GB and €1,099 (about 721,000 FCFA) for 512 GB, which is 26 to 30% below the original price. Insist on a warranty of at least twelve months and a battery certified above 85%.

iPhone 17 Pro in Cameroon and West and Central Africa

Apple has no store of its own in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa. The iPhone 17 Pro goes through authorised resellers, carriers and a vast import market. The site Mobile57 gives an indicative price of about €1,199 (786,300 FCFA) in Cameroon for the 256 GB model, an amount calculated from the US price. The prices actually charged in Douala, Abidjan or Dakar are higher and vary from one shop to the next: ask for an invoice.

Where the device comes from matters as much as its price. Here are the three checks to make before paying.

  • US version: it has no SIM tray at all and works with eSIM only. Make sure your carrier offers one.
  • Chinese or Hong Kong version: two physical nano SIMs, handy for combining two carriers, but no eSIM on the mainland China model.
  • European version: one nano SIM and one eSIM, the best compromise for travelling between Africa and Europe.

On the warranty side, Apple may limit coverage to the country of purchase: a device imported from Dubai will be hard to get repaired locally. 5G works on the sub-6 GHz bands, the ones being rolled out by carriers in the region, and 4G poses no problem at all.

Pros and cons of the iPhone 17 Pro

Pros

  • Price down by €100 to €200 new, and by nearly €350 refurbished.
  • Performance sustained over time thanks to the vapour chamber.
  • Top-level video, professional tools included.
  • Compact 6.3-inch format, a full day of battery life.
  • Software support expected until at least 2031.

Cons

  • No longer sold by Apple: limited stock and colours.
  • Full charge in 1 hour 30 minutes, charger not included.
  • Camera bar edges prone to marks.
  • New Siri unavailable in the European Union for now.
  • Telephoto falls behind at long range against 200 MP periscope lenses.

Xiaomi 18 Pro

The direct successor is the obvious choice if the budget allows. On the Android side, the Pixel 11 Pro starts at €1,199 with seven years of updates and the Tensor G6 chip. Less well known, the Xiaomi 18 Pro targets the same compact format with a 7,000 mAh battery and two 200 MP sensors, but it is only sold in China for the moment. Fans of very large screens can also weigh up the bigger sibling, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, against the Galaxy S26 Ultra.

Conclusion: should you buy the iPhone 17 Pro in late 2026?

Yes, if the price is right. The iPhone 17 Pro has not aged: its chip still outpaces most Android models, its video sets the standard and its software support runs for at least five years. The variable aperture, the in-house modem and the three extra hours of battery life quoted for the 2026 generation do not change everyday use.

The calculation changes if you own an iPhone 16 Pro: keep it. It also changes above €1,300, where the gap with the new model becomes too thin. Between the two, a refurbished unit under €1,000 remains the smartest way into Apple’s Pro range.

Our pick

iPhone 17 Pro 256 GB — at €1,229 new (about 806,000 FCFA) or around €982 refurbished, it is the most sensible Pro model of this year’s end for anyone coming from an iPhone 15 or older.

Frequently asked questions

What is the iPhone 17 Pro price in France in October 2026?

Apple has not sold it since 9 September 2026. At retailers, the 256 GB version is listed at €1,229 (about 806,000 FCFA), against €1,329 at launch, and the 512 GB version at €1,479. One-off promotions brought it down to €1,129 at Amazon over the summer. Refurbished, the lowest prices start at €982 for 256 GB according to RefurbMe. Compare several stores before ordering.

Does the iPhone 17 Pro support iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence?

Yes. It has been receiving iOS 27 since mid-September 2026 and supports Apple Intelligence, including in the European Union: writing tools, summaries, photo retouching, visual intelligence. However, the new conversational Siri is not available in the European Union at launch and starts out in English. Apple has given no precise date for Europe.

How much does the iPhone 17 Pro cost in Cameroon?

There is no official Apple price in Cameroon. The site Mobile57 gives an indicative price of 786,300 FCFA for the 256 GB version, 929,400 FCFA for 512 GB and 1,072,500 FCFA for 1 TB, calculated from US prices. In shops in Douala or Yaoundé, expect to pay more, depending on where the device comes from and the seller’s margin. Check the SIM type, because US models accept eSIM only, and ask for an invoice for the warranty.

Is the iPhone 17 Pro waterproof and dust resistant?

Yes, it is IP68 rated: Apple quotes immersion down to 6 metres for 30 minutes and complete protection against dust. This resistance decreases with wear and knocks, and the warranty does not cover liquid damage. So avoid sea water and soapy water, rinse with fresh water after any contact, and let the USB-C port dry before charging.
