The Tecno Camon 50 Ultra 5G is the most polished camera phone Tecno has released in 2026, and one of the most complete mid-rangers you can buy right now. It is aimed at people who want a real optical zoom, exceptional battery life and a bright screen without paying Galaxy or Pixel money. Its weak spots are well documented: a decent chip that is not the fastest in its class, an inconsistent telephoto camera and wired charging capped at 45 W. For buyers in Africa looking for a tough, water-resistant phone that keeps going through power cuts, it is an excellent option.

Introduction: the Camon that wants to play with the big boys

The Camon 50 series was unveiled in early March 2026 at MWC in Barcelona. It has three main models: the Camon 50, the Camon 50 Pro and this Camon 50 Ultra, which sits at the top of the range. It then launched in Nigeria, Kenya, the Philippines, Pakistan and India.

On paper, the Ultra ticks a lot of flagship boxes. Glass back, curved edges, a 144 Hz screen, a dedicated telephoto and the kind of water and dust protection you would expect from a rugged phone. All of it runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate, built on a 4 nm process, which is still a mid-range chip. That is Tecno’s whole bet: put the money into the camera, the screen and the battery rather than raw power.

It targets content creators, photography fans and people who keep their phone for several years. Demanding gamers have other options, including within Transsion.

Three numbers sum up this phone. First, the 6,500 mAh battery, a big capacity for a device quoted at 7.8 mm thick and 178 g. Second, the 50 + 50 MP pairing on the back, with a genuine 70 mm telephoto that is rare at this price. Third, the software promise: three major Android updates and five years of security patches, an unusual commitment from Tecno. Note that some databases list 6,160 mAh: the exact capacity may vary by market.

Design: slim, elegant and very tough

The Camon 50 Ultra uses a glass sandwich design with edges that curve slightly on both sides. Several outlets have pointed out its resemblance to the Galaxy S26 Ultra, especially around the camera island. The two-tone matte back does a good job of hiding fingerprints. The frame is plastic, but according to published reviews it passes for metal quite convincingly.

That very smooth finish has a downside: the phone is slippery. Tecno includes a faux-leather case in the box, and you should put it on from day one, all the more so because curved edges are hard to protect.

Its real strength lies elsewhere: durability. The Camon 50 Ultra holds IP66, IP68, IP69 and IP69K certifications, plus the MIL-STD-810H military standard for thermal shock, humidity and transport. Fine dust, heavy rain, a drop in water, high-pressure jets: that is a serious argument in the rainy season and on dusty roads alike.

On the practical side, you get an optical in-display fingerprint reader, fast and reliable according to feedback, an infrared blaster to control your TV and air conditioner, stereo speakers and a programmable AI key on the left edge. The tray takes two nano-SIMs, with an optional eSIM, but never more than two active lines at once. No headphone jack, no microSD.

Five colours are available depending on the country: Moonshadow Black, Cypress Green, Nebula Titanium, Luminous Orange and Misty Purple.

Display: bright and sharp, with a caveat on 144 Hz

The 6.78-inch AMOLED panel has a resolution of 1208 x 2644 pixels, or about 429 pixels per inch. That is sharper than the Full HD+ usually found at this price. The screen supports HDR10 and uses 2160 Hz PWM dimming, good news for anyone whose eyes are sensitive to flicker in low light.

GSMArena’s published measurements are flattering. Brightness reaches around 735 nits with the manual slider and 1,302 nits in auto mode under strong light, peaking at 1,667 nits on a small white patch. With HDR photos, the panel even climbs past 2,300 nits. In short, the screen stays readable in direct sunlight.

The 144 Hz figure, however, needs some context. According to the same review, only a handful of apps actually use it: Facebook, Instagram, the dialer, messages, files and settings. The rest of the system tops out at 120 Hz in high mode, and standard mode sits at 60 Hz. In practice, 120 Hz is plenty, but the marketing claim is inflated.

For streaming, YouTube in HDR works well. Netflix, on the other hand, is reportedly limited to standard definition according to early published reviews, for lack of the right certification, something that could change with updates. Finally, reports on the front glass contradict each other: Gorilla Glass Victus 2 according to GSMArena, Gorilla Glass 7i according to other sources.

Performance: a sensible engine, not a race car

The Dimensity 7400 Ultimate pairs four Cortex-A78 cores at 2.6 GHz with four Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz, plus a Mali-G615 MC2 GPU. It comes with 8 or 12 GB of LPDDR5X and 256 or 512 GB of UFS storage, with no expansion. Tecno adds virtual memory that can push the advertised RAM to 24 GB, but that is just borrowed storage space, not real RAM.

Published scores put the phone in the upper half of the mid-range: around 945,000 points on AnTuTu 11, 1,072 single-core and 3,134 multi-core on Geekbench 6, and 1,050 points on 3DMark Wild Life Extreme. A Motorola Edge 60 Pro or a Galaxy A56 does better for similar money.

For everyday use, that is more than enough: social media, GPS, mobile money and light video editing all run smoothly. Popular games stay playable at medium to high settings; the heaviest 3D titles will require some compromises.

The pleasant surprise is stability. In sustained load tests, the CPU holds on to about 80% of its peak performance and the GPU does not throttle. That matters in hot climates, where many phones slow down quickly while gaming.

Camera: a solid main sensor and an outstanding selfie camera

The Ultra is Tecno’s camera showcase. The 50 MP main sensor is a 1/1.56-inch Sony Lytia 700C with an f/1.8 aperture and optical stabilisation. The 50 MP telephoto (OmniVision OV50M, 70 mm) offers 3x optical zoom and digital zoom quoted at up to 60x. The ultrawide makes do with 8 MP. Sources disagree, however, on whether the telephoto has optical stabilisation.

In daylight, the main camera wins everyone over. Published reviews mention very good dynamic range, accurate colours and reliable white balance. Processing over-sharpens edges a little, especially in native 50 MP mode, which does not add much.

The telephoto splits opinion. DXOMARK praises its consistency with the main camera and ranks it highly in the 400 to 600 dollar segment, with an overall camera score of 146. GSMArena is harsher: some 3x shots are sharp, others look smeary, almost like a watercolour. At night, the telephoto falls off sharply, with soft, washed-out images. In daylight, it is still a real advantage over rivals with no optical zoom.

The ultrawide is the weak link: contrasty and soft in the shadows, it will do for a group shot or a landscape but cannot keep up with the rest. At night, stick to the main camera, which preserves dynamic range and colours well.

The 50 MP autofocus selfie camera is the real star. Published reviews praise its detail, lively colours and skin-tone rendering, something Tecno has worked on for years with darker skin tones. For TikTok or Instagram, it is one of the phone’s strongest selling points.

For video, the main, telephoto and front cameras all record 4K at 30 frames per second, while the ultrawide stops at 1440p. Electronic stabilisation works well and gives smooth pans. Daytime 4K lacks a little fine detail, but night video holds up better than expected.

Battery and charging: its biggest strength

With its 6,500 mAh battery, the Camon 50 Ultra scores 16 hours of active use in GSMArena’s test, which calls it incredibly strong. Video playback and gaming are especially efficient. According to user feedback, two days of normal use are within reach.

For readers in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal or anywhere power cuts are routine, this is the number one argument. When the electricity goes out in the late afternoon, a phone that lasts until the next day makes a real difference.

Charging is less impressive. The bundled 45 W charger adds about 22% in 15 minutes and 42% in 30 minutes, for a full charge in around 80 minutes. That is fine given the capacity, but several rivals charge much faster. There is no wireless charging.

Tecno makes up for it with useful options. Bypass charging powers the phone directly while gaming without going through the battery, which keeps heat down. An adjustable charge limit between 80 and 95% helps preserve the battery over time.

Good to know — On an unstable power grid, plug the original charger into a surge protector or a UPS if you can. Voltage spikes when the power comes back often fry chargers, and an original 45 W unit is not easy to replace.

Software: HiOS 16, Ella and an update promise that is finally serious

The phone runs Android 16 with the HiOS 16 skin. Tecno promises three major Android updates, so up to Android 19, and five years of security patches. That is clear progress for the brand; it remains to be seen whether updates will arrive quickly in every African country.

HiOS 16 is packed with options: AI-generated themes, split screen, floating windows and a notification light zone on the back. The always-on display, however, switches off after about fifteen seconds.

The Ella assistant is at the heart of the AI experience. It offers real-time translation, writing help, sketch-to-image, photo editing (upscaling, object removal) and FlashMemo, which captures what is on screen and files it in a space called Mind Hub. Most of these features need an internet connection, which eats into your mobile data.

The good news is that the skin stays reasonable. Published reviews describe a fairly clean setup: in-house gallery, video player and browser, a few utilities, but no app store competing with the Play Store. Preinstalled apps may vary by country and carrier, including on models sold in West and Central Africa.

Price and availability: Africa, Asia, and what about Europe?

In Côte d’Ivoire, Tecno announced a recommended price of about €465 (305,000 FCFA) for the Camon 50 Ultra 5G when it launched the range in March 2026. We could not find an official price for Cameroon or Senegal, however, so check with your retailer there. Other markets still give an indicative range. In the Philippines, it went on sale on 18 April 2026 at 19,999 pesos for 8/256 GB, 21,999 pesos for 12/256 GB and 25,999 pesos for 12/512 GB, or about 300, 330 and 395 euros (200,000 to 260,000 FCFA).

In Nigeria, the 8/512 GB version is listed at around 750,000 naira, about 450 euros or 295,000 FCFA at the current rate. In Kenya, one retailer sells it for 58,000 shillings, roughly 385 euros or 255,000 FCFA. In India, where it launched on 17 July 2026, it costs 39,999 rupees, about 395 euros or 260,000 FCFA, and in Pakistan 119,999 rupees, about 370 euros. These conversions are approximate and move with exchange rates.

In West and Central Africa, you should therefore expect to pay somewhere between 200,000 and 300,000 FCFA depending on the configuration and the retailer. Buy from a Tecno store or an authorised distributor if you can: you get the manufacturer’s warranty and access to the Carlcare service network, present in major cities such as Douala, Yaoundé, Abidjan and Dakar.

On the network side, the phone supports 5G in SA and NSA modes, 4G and dual SIM. 5G is still limited in Central and West Africa, but it is spreading in capital cities. The exact list of supported 5G bands is still to be confirmed with the retailer to check compatibility with your carrier. In France, the Camon 50 Ultra is not officially sold. GSMArena puts it at around 400 euros in Europe, but we have not found any product listing on Amazon.fr, Fnac, Darty or Cdiscount so far.

If your budget is tight, the Tecno Camon 50 Pro keeps the spirit of the range for less money: it is the logical choice if you can live without the telephoto. If you game a lot, the Infinix GT 50 Pro, designed with gaming in mind, is worth a look. Finally, the Infinix Note 60 Ultra is the direct rival within the Transsion group, with the same Carlcare service network. Outside Transsion, the Galaxy A56 and the Motorola Edge 60 Pro are more powerful for the same price in Europe.

Conclusion: should you buy the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra?

Yes, as long as you know what you are getting. The Camon 50 Ultra is no powerhouse, and its telephoto is not on par with a true flagship. But it brings together what matters most to most people: a superb screen, a battery that stands up to power cuts, a reliable main camera, excellent selfies and a body that shrugs off rain, dust and drops.

In West and Central Africa, backed by the Carlcare warranty, it is one of the best choices under 300,000 FCFA, depending on the local price. In France, the lack of official distribution makes buying and repairing it harder.

Our pick

Tecno Camon 50 Ultra 5G — Tecno’s most complete camera and battery-life smartphone of 2026, ideal for creators and heavy users in West and Central Africa, at around 200,000 to 300,000 FCFA depending on the version.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra cost in Cameroon?

No official price had been published for Cameroon at the time of writing. Based on prices in the Philippines, Kenya, Nigeria and India, expect a range of roughly 200,000 to 300,000 FCFA depending on the memory option and the retailer. Ask for the price at a Tecno store or an authorised distributor, and check that the Carlcare warranty is included. Units imported from Asia may be cheaper, but come without a local warranty.

Does the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra support 5G?

Yes. As its full name suggests, the Camon 50 Ultra 5G supports 5G in standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) modes, thanks to its MediaTek Dimensity 7400 Ultimate chip. It also handles 4G, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth and NFC. In Africa, 5G is still limited to a few large cities, but the phone will be ready when your carrier switches it on. Check with your carrier which bands it uses to be sure of compatibility.

Is the Tecno Camon 50 Ultra waterproof?

Yes, and it is one of its big strengths. It is IP68 and IP69K certified, which means it is fully protected against dust and withstands both prolonged immersion and high-pressure water jets. It also meets the MIL-STD-810H military standard for thermal shock and humidity. Still, keep it away from salt or soapy water, and never charge it while the USB-C port is wet.

How many Android updates will the Camon 50 Ultra get?

Tecno promises three major Android updates and five years of security patches. Launched on Android 16 with HiOS 16, the phone should therefore go up to Android 19 and stay protected until around 2031. That is a clear improvement over older Camon models. The rollout pace may vary from country to country, though: turn on automatic updates and check the update menu in settings regularly.
