The Steam Deck OLED is still, in 2026, the most pleasant handheld gaming PC to live with, but it is no longer the bargain it used to be: since 27 May, Valve has been selling it in France for €779 (about 511,000 FCFA) with 512GB and €919 (about 603,000 FCFA) with 1TB. The machine itself has not changed since November 2023. Same screen, same chip, same battery. This page takes stock of what it is still worth, who it suits at that price, and when it makes more sense to look elsewhere or go for a second-hand unit.

Introduction: Steam Deck OLED in 2026, a benchmark that has become expensive

When Valve launched this version on 16 November 2023, the maths was simple. For €569 (about 373,000 FCFA), you got a complete portable gaming PC, a superb screen and a system designed around a controller. No Windows machine came close to that ratio between price and fun.

Three years on, the landscape has shifted. The entry-level LCD model disappeared from the catalogue in December 2025. The Steam Deck OLED then went out of stock in several regions, for lack of memory and storage, before coming back on 27 May 2026 with prices raised by 35 to 37%. We went through the causes of that surge in our article on the RAM shortage and DDR5 prices.

In the meantime, Valve has widened its range with the Steam Machine for the living room and the Steam Frame headset, but no handheld successor has been announced. So the question is no longer whether the Steam Deck OLED is good, but whether it is still worth close to €800. This page draws on the official specifications, published reviews and feedback from players. Our newsroom has not had the device in hand.

Verdict in brief: our take on the Steam Deck OLED

Verdict in 30 seconds

7.6/10Excellent, but too expensive

The most polished handheld gaming PC in day-to-day use, thanks to its OLED screen, its battery life and SteamOS. The May 2026 price rise takes away its main argument: the price.

For whom Players who already own a Steam library, who mostly play indie titles or games released before 2024, and who want a simple machine without Windows.

Avoid if You want to run the big games of 2026 at good quality, you play competitive titles with kernel-level anti-cheat, or your budget stops at €500.

We like

  • HDR OLED screen at 90Hz, still among the best in its class
  • SteamOS, simple and well supported, with more than 30,000 games verified or playable
  • Solid battery life in light games and quiet cooling
  • A repairable machine, with spare parts sold individually

We like less

  • Price raised by €210 to €240 with no hardware change
  • A 2022 chip that the big recent games have outgrown
  • Games with kernel-level anti-cheat are incompatible

Three figures sum up the Steam Deck OLED. The 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution looks modest, but it is what allows a 15W chip to stay playable. The 50Wh battery explains the gap in battery life with Windows handhelds in light games. The 16GB of shared memory, plenty in 2023, is starting to hold back demanding games, because the graphics chip also draws its video memory from it.

Design: a big, well thought-out handheld that you can open up

The Steam Deck OLED reuses the shell of the first model down to the millimetre: 298 x 117 x 49mm. It is an imposing machine, wider than a Switch 2, and it will not slip into any pocket. Valve did manage to shave off around thirty grams to get down to roughly 640g. That is less than most Windows rivals, which often go beyond 700g.

A plain, sturdy plastic shell

The matte black plastic copes well with marks and small knocks, according to three years of accumulated feedback. The thick grips spread the weight. No water or dust rating is claimed: the cooling vents are wide, and use in a very dusty environment calls for regular cleaning.

Steam Deck OLED 1TB or 512GB: what changes

Both versions share the same chip, the same memory and the same battery. The 1TB model adds etched anti-glare glass, easier to read outdoors or under ceiling lights, and a carrying case whose inner part detaches to form a slim pouch. The 512GB model has glossy glass, which is more prone to reflections. In both cases, a microSD slot lets you add storage, and the internal SSD, in the M.2 2230 format, can be replaced.

Repairability that is rare for this kind of product

Valve replaced the shell screws with Torx ones that go into metal inserts, which allows the device to be opened repeatedly without damaging the plastic. The joysticks, the screen, the battery and the buttons are sold as spare parts by iFixit, the official partner, along with step-by-step guides. Being able to swap a drifting stick yourself matters as much as a bump in power.

Ergonomics and controls: the trackpads still make the difference

The control layout remains one of a kind. The two sticks sit at the top, next to the D-pad and the ABXY buttons, and two square touchpads take up the lower part of the grips. These trackpads act as a mouse in strategy games, management games or old titles designed for a keyboard. No direct competitor offers any as large.

Four paddles on the back, a gyroscope and touch-sensitive sticks round off the set. Everything can be configured game by game in Steam Input. The downside: the sticks are not Hall effect, unlike those of several recent rivals.

Display: the HDR OLED panel is still the number one asset

The Steam Deck OLED screen was the reason for this version to exist, and it is still what sets it apart. The 7.4-inch panel shows 1,280 x 800 pixels in a 16:10 format, with a refresh rate adjustable up to 90Hz. Valve quotes 600 cd/m² in standard display and up to 1,000 cd/m² in HDR, as well as wide coverage of the DCI-P3 colour space.

What the published reviews measure

Tom’s Guide France recorded 493 cd/m² on average and a peak of 580 cd/m² in SDR, with a Delta E of 4.27: colours that flatter rather than stay strictly accurate. The contrast, for its part, is what you expect from OLED: blacks that are switched off, dark games that are finally readable and HDR that makes sense in supported titles. Journal du Geek points out that this HDR only benefits compatible games.

A modest resolution, but one that makes sense

Next to the 1080p or 1200p screens of its competitors, 800p looks pale. On 7.4 inches, sharpness remains decent, and above all the chip does not have to render twice as many pixels. Two reservations all the same. The panel does not support variable refresh rate, whereas rivals with VRR LCD screens smooth out frame rate drops better. And like any OLED screen, it can suffer burn-in over time if a static interface stays on screen for very long periods.

Good to know — The anti-glare glass on the 1TB model slightly reduces perceived contrast in a dark room. If you mostly play in the evening, the glossy glass of the 512GB version is not a flaw. Outdoors or under strip lights, the etched finish is worth the difference.

Performance: a 2022 chip that is showing its limits

The Steam Deck OLED is built around a custom AMD chip: four Zen 2 cores, an RDNA 2 graphics part and 16GB of LPDDR5 memory. The 6nm process improves efficiency and heat, not power. The thermal envelope runs from 4 to 15W. Recent Windows handhelds go up to 30W and beyond.

What runs well

The entire indie catalogue, 2D games, titles from the PS4 generation and emulation up to the home consoles of the 2000s all run effortlessly, often at 60 or 90 frames per second. The big games from 2020 to 2023, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring or Baldur’s Gate 3, remain playable at around 30 to 40 frames per second on low to medium settings, according to published reviews.

Where it struggles in 2026

Recent big-budget productions are another matter. Many need aggressive upscaling to reach 30 frames per second, with a blurry picture, and some are rated “Unsupported” by Valve. Journal du Geek was already writing in 2023 that the chip was showing its age. That assessment has only hardened since.

Heat and noise

The fan, larger than on the LCD model, stays quiet: Tom’s Guide never measured more than 39 dB. Heat is concentrated at the back, away from the hands. On a train or in a shared bedroom, that quietness counts.

Game library and compatibility: 30,000 titles, a few major absentees

The Steam Deck OLED runs Windows games thanks to Proton, Valve’s translation layer. The verification programme rates every title. In early September 2026, PC Gamer counted more than 30,000 usable games: 8,964 “Verified”, which work without any tweaking, and 21,083 “Playable”, which need an adjustment or display text that is a little small. Your Steam library follows you.

The limits mostly come down to anti-cheat systems installed at kernel level, which are incompatible with Linux. Here are the cases to know about before buying:

  • Fortnite, Valorant, the recent Call of Duty games and GTA Online do not launch under SteamOS.
  • A publisher can withdraw compatibility after the fact: Ubisoft did so for For Honor in September 2026, PC Gamer reports.
  • Game Pass cannot be installed locally: it goes through the cloud, and therefore through a fast and stable connection.
  • The Epic, GOG or Ubisoft stores work through third-party tools such as Heroic, at the cost of a little setup.

If your main games are on the list above, this handheld is not made for you.

Battery life and charging: the strong point against Windows handhelds

Valve quotes 3 to 12 hours depending on the game, thanks to a 50Wh battery, the 6nm process and a screen that draws little power on dark images. It all depends on what you launch.

The published measurements

Tom’s Guide recorded 7 hours 25 minutes in Dead Cells, 3 hours 28 minutes in Diablo IV and 2 hours 36 minutes in Cyberpunk 2077. Journal du Geek gets a little over 2 hours in Baldur’s Gate 3 and 5 to 6 hours in indie games, which is 30 to 50% better than the LCD model. Capping the game at 40 or 45 frames per second buys extra playing time.

Charging and looking after the battery

The 45W USB-C charger in the box comes with a 2.5m cable, handy for playing while plugged in. Valve says a charge from 20 to 80% takes about 45 minutes. The system lets you cap the charge level to spare the battery if the handheld often stays on mains power. A 45W Power Delivery power bank will recharge the Steam Deck OLED on the move.

Software: SteamOS, the real reason to choose this handheld

SteamOS is a Linux system dressed in an interface designed for a controller. You pick up your game where you left it, and you put the machine to sleep with a single press. Windows has never managed to offer that simplicity on a 7-inch screen, despite Microsoft’s efforts on the ROG Xbox Ally X.

Support that is not letting up

Valve does not commit to any length of update support, but the facts speak for themselves. SteamOS 3.8, released as a stable version on 17 June 2026, brings the Linux 6.16 kernel, new graphics drivers, a KDE Plasma 6.4 desktop mode that moves to Wayland and lower input latency. The Steam Deck OLED receives the same system as the Steam Machine released this summer.

A real PC under the hood

Desktop mode gives access to a full Linux system. Hooked up to a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse through a USB-C dock, sold separately, the machine can stand in as a backup computer. As soon as you step outside Steam, though, you have to be willing to follow a tutorial from time to time.

Steam Deck OLED price and availability in France and Africa

Steam Deck OLED: price in France

Valve sells the Steam Deck OLED directly on the Steam store. Since 27 May 2026, expect to pay €779 (about 511,000 FCFA) for the 512GB model, up from €569, and €919 (about 603,000 FCFA) for the 1TB model, up from €679 (about 445,000 FCFA). Valve justifies the increase by the cost of components and worldwide logistics difficulties.

The Steam Deck OLED is not officially distributed by Amazon, Fnac, Darty or Cdiscount in France: the listings you come across there are from third-party sellers, often at higher prices. To pay less, that leaves Valve’s certified refurbished units, when there are any, and the second-hand market.

West and Central Africa: importing is the only way

Valve does not ship to any African country. In Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal, you have to go through a relative in Europe, a parcel forwarding service or a local importer, then add shipping and customs duties. The warranty applies in the country of purchase, which means sending the handheld back to Europe if it breaks down.

In everyday use, the Steam Deck OLED copes well with local conditions. It has no cellular modem, but once the games have been downloaded over Wi-Fi, offline mode works without a connection. Still, allow for several tens of gigabytes per big game. The charger accepts voltages from 100 to 240V, and the battery life lets you keep playing through a power cut.

Against the competition: what is the Steam Deck OLED worth at €779?

Everyone has put prices up, which limits the damage. The ROG Xbox Ally X has gone from €899.99 to €999.99 (about 656,000 FCFA) at its official price, even though promotions at around €830 were spotted in June. The Lenovo Legion Go 2 now starts at €1,749.99 (about 1,148,000 FCFA), according to Xboxygen. Both machines are more powerful, but heavier and dependent on Windows.

Below that, the base ROG Xbox Ally, at €599.99 (about 394,000 FCFA), is the real threat: cheaper, with a 1080p variable refresh rate screen, and compatible with every anti-cheat system. Its LCD screen and battery life are no match for those of the Steam Deck OLED. The Switch 2, which went up to €499.99 (about 328,000 FCFA) on 1 September, lives off its Nintendo exclusives. Our Switch 2, Steam Deck OLED and ROG Ally comparison covers this three-way match in detail.

Is it worth waiting for the Steam Deck 2?

Nothing suggests it is coming any time soon. Valve keeps saying that a successor will only arrive with a real generational leap. In November 2025, engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais explained that a gain of 20, 30 or even 50% at equal battery life did not interest him. No date has been given since.

The ROG Xbox Ally X is aimed at those who want to play recent titles and competitive games with no compatibility compromise. Fans of extreme machines will also look at the GPD Win 5.

Conclusion: should you buy the Steam Deck OLED in 2026?

Yes, if you know what you are buying. The Steam Deck OLED is no longer a good deal, it is a good product sold at the market price. Its screen, its battery life, its quietness and above all SteamOS still make it the most enjoyable machine for a Steam library of indie games, classics and pre-2024 titles.

No, if you expect it to keep up with the big-budget releases of the next two years, or if your evenings are spent on Fortnite and Call of Duty. Between the two versions, the 512GB model is enough with a microSD card, unless you often play in bright light.

Good to know — Buying second-hand is currently the most sensible way to get this handheld. Check the condition of the sticks, make sure there is no burn-in on the screen and that the original charger is included.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of the Steam Deck OLED in France in 2026?

Since 27 May 2026, Valve has been selling the 512GB model for €779 (about 511,000 FCFA) and the 1TB model for €919 (about 603,000 FCFA) on the Steam store. Before that date, they cost €569 and €679. The increase is linked to the soaring price of memory and storage. The Steam Deck OLED is officially sold by Valve only.

Steam Deck OLED review: is it still worth it against Windows handhelds?

Yes for comfort, no for power. Its screen, its battery life in light games and the simplicity of SteamOS remain above what Windows machines offer. A ROG Xbox Ally X, on the other hand, delivers more frames per second in recent games and runs titles with anti-cheat. For indie games or games released before 2024, the Steam Deck OLED remains the best choice.

What is the difference between the 512GB and 1TB versions?

The chip, the memory, the battery and the panel are identical. The 1TB model doubles the storage, and adds etched anti-glare glass and a case with a removable slim pouch. The 512GB model has glossy glass. The price gap is €140. As storage can be expanded with a microSD card, the 512GB version suits most players.

Can you play Fortnite or Game Pass on the Steam Deck OLED?

Not locally under SteamOS. Fortnite, Valorant, the recent Call of Duty games and GTA Online use anti-cheat systems that are incompatible with Linux. Game Pass and Fortnite remain accessible through cloud gaming, in the browser, provided you have a fast and stable connection. Installing Windows is possible, but Valve only supplies basic drivers and the experience suffers for it. Check your favourite games before buying.

Steam Deck OLED in 2026 or Steam Deck 2: should you wait?

Valve has announced neither a date nor specifications for a successor. The company says it is waiting for a chip that offers a real generational leap at equal battery life. With the memory crisis, a launch that is both close and affordable looks unlikely. If you want to play now, waiting does not make much sense. If the current model seems too expensive to you, buying second-hand is a better answer than patience.
