Kdenlive is a non-linear video editor built by volunteers in the KDE community. It is released under the GNU GPL, so it is free to use with no watermark and no subscription, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
What Kdenlive is for
At its heart is a multitrack timeline that takes almost any audio or video format. It handles multicam editing, three-point editing, nested sequences and automatic project backups. Hundreds of effects and transitions can be animated with keyframes. For colour work there are LUTs, correction tools and scopes such as the histogram, vectorscope and waveform. On the audio side you get a mixer, voice-over recording and a spectrum view. It can also generate subtitles through automatic transcription and works with Glaxnimate for motion graphics.
Who is it for?
Kdenlive is aimed at hobbyists and semi-pro editors who want a proper editing suite without paying for a licence: YouTubers, community groups, schools and Linux users, for whom it is one of the standard choices. Heavier projects call for a reasonably capable computer and some learning, but the documentation and community forum are thorough.
Download Kdenlive safely
Download Kdenlive from kdenlive.org: there is an installer or a standalone build for Windows 10 and later, separate builds for Apple silicon and Intel Macs (macOS 13 or later), and AppImage and Flatpak packages for Linux. Most Linux distributions also ship it in their own repositories.
