Everything is a small file search utility for Windows made by voidtools. What sets it apart from the search built into Windows is speed: it starts by listing every file and folder on the PC, then narrows the list down with each letter you type. It is freeware, with no ads and nothing extra slipped into the installer.
What Everything is for
The first time it runs, Everything indexes the names of files and folders on NTFS drives, then keeps that index current in real time by reading the Windows USN journal. A search across hundreds of thousands of files comes back in a fraction of a second. Only names are indexed, not content: the content: function can look inside files, but it is much slower. There are also filters by file type, search operators, regular expressions, and an HTTP or ETP server so another device can query the index.
Who is it for?
Everything is for anyone who has wasted time hunting for a document, a photo or an installer that ended up in the wrong folder. Power users and IT staff tend to like the search syntax and the portable build, which runs without installation. It supports every Windows release since XP, so it still earns its place on older machines.

Get Everything from voidtools.com, the developer’s own site, as a 32-bit or 64-bit installer, a portable ZIP, or a Lite edition without the server features. The site lists a SHA256 hash for every file so you can check the download has not been tampered with. A new major version is also available there as a beta, alongside the stable release.
