One UI 9 is almost there for the Galaxy S26. Samsung confirmed in early September, on its community forum, that the stable build of its Android skin would land “soon” on the S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra. With the Korean manufacturer, that kind of post usually comes only days before a rollout. After eight successive beta builds, the update to Android 17 has entered its final stretch.

Where the rollout actually stands

Two things need separating here. One UI 9 already exists in final form: Samsung shipped it preinstalled on its summer 2026 foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8. Still missing is the update for devices already in people’s hands.

The Galaxy S26 line leads the queue. It has received eight beta builds, the last one a hotfix pushed the same day as Samsung’s announcement. The company gave no precise date, but its community forum post is a signal regulars know how to read: the stable release is a matter of days, not weeks.

Behind it, the Galaxy S25 series has started its own beta programme in early September. The Galaxy S25, S25+ and S25 Ultra have access in the United States, the United Kingdom, South Korea and India. Notably, Samsung included the Galaxy S25 FE in the Korean programme, the first mid-range device admitted at this stage.

Which Galaxy phones get One UI 9

The eligibility list is broad, as it has been since Samsung committed to seven years of updates on its flagships. The generations concerned first are these:

  • Galaxy S26, S26+ and S26 Ultra: front of the queue, stable build imminent.
  • Galaxy S25, S25+, S25 Ultra, S25 Edge and S25 FE: beta under way, stable to follow.
  • Galaxy S24, S24+, S24 Ultra and S24 FE: scheduled next.
  • Galaxy Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra and Z Flip 8: shipped on One UI 9 out of the box.
  • Galaxy A mid-range: the A36, A37, A56 and A57 are among the models selected, with a staggered rollout running to the end of the year.

Older generations, including the Galaxy S23 series, generally close the queue. If your device is more than three years old, check Samsung’s official list before growing impatient: not every model made the cut.

What One UI 9 actually brings

The skin is built on Android 17. Three areas kept Samsung’s teams busy: interface customisation, assistance features and data protection.

Customisation and interface

Styling options multiply, alongside work on animations and general fluidity. That kind of project reads poorly on a spec sheet. In daily use, it makes itself felt within the first hour.

New features

Among the additions Samsung highlights are Now Nudge, a contextual suggestion feature, and My FanCam, aimed at video capture. Bixby also picks up improvements, at a time when the Korean assistant shares Galaxy phones with Gemini.

Privacy

Samsung adds tools dedicated to managing privacy for its AI features. The subject has turned hot. Some processing happens on the device, some in the cloud, and users now want clarity on what goes where.

How to install the update on day one

Nothing complicated, but a few habits will save you trouble:

  • Go to Settings, then Software update, and tap Download and install.
  • Back up your data before starting. A major Android version jump remains a heavy operation.
  • Keep at least 50% battery and a stable Wi-Fi connection; the package runs to several gigabytes.
  • Do not worry if nothing shows up on day one. Samsung rolls out in waves, country by country, and the same model can receive the update several days apart depending on the carrier.

Worth knowing: the first days of a major rollout often come with reduced battery life while the system reindexes files and re-optimises apps. Let two or three charge cycles pass before drawing conclusions.

Your model is not on the list? What that actually means

Missing out on One UI 9 does not leave you with a dead phone. The distinction matters, and it is often misunderstood.

A major version update brings new features and a new system base. Security patches follow a separate schedule: Samsung keeps pushing them to devices that no longer receive new Android versions, sometimes for years. As long as your model gets those monthly or quarterly patches, daily use stays sound.

Three useful habits if your device is nearing the end of its run:

  • Check the patch cadence. Under Settings, then Security and privacy, the date of the last installed patch tells you where you stand. A gap of more than six months deserves attention.
  • Keep your apps updated. Most critical services, from the browser to your banking app, secure themselves independently of the system.
  • Be wary of custom ROMs. Installing third-party software to get Android 17 voids the warranty, often breaks Samsung Pay and Secure Folder features, and is a poor idea on your main phone.

One last point: software longevity has become a purchasing criterion in its own right. Seven years of updates on a flagship changes the real cost calculation over a device’s lifetime. It deserves as much attention as the megapixel count before your next purchase.

Should you rush?

If your phone is your main work tool, hold off for a week after the rollout opens. Fixes for the first reported bugs arrive quickly, and you will avoid the nuisance of a work app that is temporarily incompatible.

For everyone else, there is no reason to hold back. One UI 9 brings the Android 17 security baseline, and recent Samsung releases have a decent reputation for stability at launch.

A word for anyone thinking of changing device: the Galaxy S25 Ultra remains a safe bet at this point in the cycle. A 6.9-inch QHD+ display with adaptive refresh from 1 to 120 Hz, a Snapdragon 8 Elite chip, 12 GB of memory, a 200-megapixel main sensor, a 5,000 mAh battery, a titanium frame and IP68 certification. It is of course among the devices eligible for One UI 9.
