Xperia 10 VIII: Sony makes its new mid-ranger official on August 25
Sony has confirmed the date: the Xperia 10 VIII will be unveiled on August 25, 2026 at 02:00 UTC. The Japanese brand posted a terse invitation for an “Xperia New Product Announcement” without naming the device, but the leaks piled up over the past month leave little doubt. On the menu: a compact mid-ranger, a Qualcomm chipset carried over unchanged, and a headphone jack that refuses to die. Here is everything we know ahead of the reveal.
An official date, but still no name
The announcement came from Sony’s official Xperia account: a video stream scheduled for August 25 at 11:00 JST, which is 02:00 UTC. True to form, Sony did not specify which product would be shown. The company simply refers to a “new Xperia product announcement”.
The context, however, is clear. Last month the FCC, the US telecoms regulator, published the certification file for a new Sony handset meant to sit alongside the Xperia 1 VIII flagship released earlier this year. The document only revealed charging information and a handful of hardware details, including the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack — now a genuine rarity.
An earlier leak had already tied three model numbers to the Xperia 10 VIII: XQ-GH44, XQ-GH54 and XQ-GH74. Those three references typically correspond to regional and memory variants of a single device.
What Geekbench gave away
On August 20, the XQ-GH54 reference appeared in the Geekbench benchmarking database. That is often a sign the device is already in reviewers’ hands.
The listing reveals two important details:
- The processor is identified as “QTI SM6475”. That internal Qualcomm reference corresponds to the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 — exactly the same chip found in the Xperia 10 VII.
- The device carries 8 GB of RAM.
In other words, Sony would be carrying its platform over without a generational change. On paper that is disappointing: the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is a decent 4 nm mid-range chip, but it already has a year of service in the Xperia line. In practice, Sony has a track record of tuning its devices carefully, and the Xperia 10 VII felt smooth day to day despite a modest spec sheet.
The handset is also expected to run Android 16, with a 120 Hz OLED display.
A design nearly identical to the Xperia 10 VII
A first image leaked on August 22, days before the announcement. It shows a dual rear camera housed in a horizontal island bearing the Sony logo. The overall silhouette stays very close to the Xperia 10 VII.
For several generations now, Sony has stuck to a clear brief: light, narrow and easy-to-hold devices, against the grain of the 6.8-inch slabs saturating the market. The Xperia 10 VII weighed 168 grams with a 6.1-inch 19.5:9 OLED screen, a 5,000 mAh battery, IP65/68 certification and a 16 mm equivalent ultra-wide lens. A sharp turn on this eighth iteration seems unlikely.
Price and availability: the big unknowns
This is the weak spot of the pre-announcement. Sony has communicated no pricing, no launch schedule and no market list. Two points are worth watching, though.
First, a US release is considered unlikely for this mid-ranger: Sony has steadily scaled back its presence in that market and now limits Xperia 10 launches to Europe and Asia.
Second, the whole sector is under real pricing pressure. Soaring memory prices and saturated advanced-node capacity at TSMC are pushing manufacturers to revise price lists upward. Samsung is affected, and so is Apple according to several analysts. An Xperia 10 VIII priced in line with its predecessor would, in that context, be a small achievement.
In the meantime, the Xperia 10 VII remains available and regularly sees its price drop as the successor approaches — a familiar pattern worth tracking if you are after a compact phone with a headphone jack.

The Xperia 10 VIII targets a specific and increasingly underserved audience: people who want a manageable, long-lasting phone with a headphone jack and a microSD slot, without paying flagship money. By carrying over the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, Sony is making a readable bet: prioritise battery life and software stability over chasing benchmark points. If pricing stays reasonable and the update commitment holds up — Sony still trails the seven years promised by Samsung and Google — the device could find its audience.
