Over the past few days, users have reported a green screen taking over WhatsApp and making the app nearly unusable: interface turning neon green, unreadable chats, invisible buttons. The issue mainly hits Android, often after an update to the app or the system. The good news: this is a display bug, not a loss of your data. Here’s how to get a normal app back, step by step.

Where the Bug Comes From

The green screen is a graphics rendering problem: WhatsApp can no longer display its interface correctly, usually because of an incompatibility between an app version and the system component in charge of rendering (often Android System WebView or hardware acceleration). This kind of bug typically appears right after an update and is almost always fixed on the software side, with no risky steps.

Step 1: Update WhatsApp

This is the most common fix. Developers ship a patch very quickly when a display bug this visible spreads.

  • Open the Play Store (or App Store), search for WhatsApp and tap Update if the button appears.
  • Then restart the app. In most cases, the green screen goes away with the new version.

Step 2: Restart the Phone and Clear the Cache

  • Simply restart the device: this reboots the rendering engine and sometimes fixes everything.
  • If the bug persists, clear WhatsApp’s cache: Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear cache. This does not delete your chats, only temporary files.

Step 3: Update Android System WebView

On Android, the display of many apps relies on a shared component, Android System WebView. A buggy version of this component can cause green screens across several apps.

  • Open the Play Store, search for Android System WebView and update it.
  • Do the same for Google Chrome, which provides this engine on some phones. Then restart.

Step 4: Check for a System Update

If the green screen appeared right after an Android update, a system fix may already be available.

  • Go to Settings → System → System update and install the latest patch offered.

Step 5: As a Last Resort, Reinstall the App

If nothing works, a clean reinstall clears the most stubborn cases.

  • Back up your chats first: in WhatsApp, Settings → Chats → Chat backup, and run a backup to Google Drive (or iCloud).
  • Uninstall then reinstall WhatsApp from the store, sign back in and restore the backup when the app offers to.

What It Means for You

A green screen looks alarming, but it’s almost always a simple display bug fixed in a few minutes: an app update, a WebView component to refresh, a restart. Keep the habit of backing up your chats regularly before any tinkering, and of updating your apps as soon as a fix is available: it’s the best defense against this kind of mishap.
