A Renault key card that is not detected can usually be worked around by putting it in the card reader, or on the placement area, depending on the model. If that fails, try the second card, then the battery, which lasts about 2 years. The emergency key hidden inside the card opens the door as a last resort.
Common symptoms and causes
The exact wording of the messages varies with the model and the car’s language. Look for their meaning instead:
- Card not detected message: the car cannot find the card. Start with solution 1.
- Message asking you to place the card near the START button: check the battery or put the card on the placement area.
- Low card battery message: the battery needs replacing.
- Card out of sync: the car and the card no longer recognise each other. On a Mégane 4 phase 2, you need the emergency key.
- Electronic fault reported by the car.
- Weak 12 V battery: this lead comes from user reports, not from a Renault manual.
Good to know: on a Mégane 4 phase 2, a flat card battery disables remote locking. Locking and starting still work with the key or the card.
Before you start
Get your car’s owner’s manual. The reader or placement area depends on the model and the phase (Clio 4, Mégane 4, Captur, Scénic).
Keep the second card within reach if you have one. Switch off the ignition before you open the card.
Warning: keep button cell batteries away from children, new or used; a swallowed battery causes severe internal burns within hours, so call your emergency number (112 in Europe, 911 in the United States) right away; take used batteries to a collection point. Never pierce, bend or heat a lithium battery, and fit the new one the right way round.
Warning: opening the card may void the warranty; check the warranty end date first. Reprogramming and replacing a card go through the Renault network.
Solution 1: start the car with the card in the reader
Already inside the car? This solution is for you. If the door stays locked, go to solution 4.
- Look in the manual for the location of the reader or placement area on your model.
- On a Clio 4 phase 2, insert the card in the reader.
- On a Mégane 4 phase 2, put the card on the placement area.
- Press START if your car has this button.
- If the steering column stays locked, move the steering wheel while pressing START.
- On a Mégane 4 phase 2 that reports an electronic fault, press the start button quickly 5 times.
The engine should start and the card not detected message should disappear.

Good to know: on a Clio 4 with a start button, unofficial sources describe a different method. Hold the card against the Renault logo on the button for about 2 seconds, with the brake or clutch pedal pressed. Check this in your manual; we did not read it on a Renault page.
Solution 2: rule out interference and try the second card
These checks come from user reports. No manual we read describes them.
- Move the card away from possible sources of interference.
- Try starting the car with the second card.
- Have the 12 V battery tested if both cards fail.
If the second card starts the car, the problem lies with the first card. If the battery is at fault, follow the checks for a car that will not start.
If the 12 V battery is too weak to start the car, this jump starter can get you going without a second vehicle.

While the engine is running, locking and opening with the card are disabled. This does not mean the card is faulty.
Solution 3: replace the card battery
The low battery message on a Clio 4 phase 2 calls for this replacement. For the details of each step, see also how to change the battery of a Renault key.
- On a Clio 4 phase 2, hold down button 1 on the card.
- On a Clio 4 phase 2, pull out the emergency key to open the card.
- Read the reference engraved on the old battery.
- Replace the battery with one of the same or an equivalent type.
- Check that the battery makes good contact and shows no traces of dye.
- Close the card.
- On a Clio 4 phase 2, press a button on the card 4 times, close to the car.
The low battery message should disappear the next time you start the car.

Good to know: the Renault manual we consulted gives no battery reference. According to forums and blogs, recent models take a CR2032 and the Mégane II a CR2025, so read the marking on the old battery.
Depending on the reference printed on your old battery, here are the two most common button cells for these cards.

Renault key card not detected after a battery change
First check the battery’s orientation and contact. If the card stays dead, see a dealer, as the Clio 4 phase 2 manual advises.
Some users also mention an internal rechargeable cell that charges in the reader on a few models. No official source confirms this.
Solution 4: open the door with the built-in emergency key
Use this when the remote no longer responds and, on a Mégane 4 phase 2, when the card is out of sync. The guide on a car key that stops working complements these steps.
- Pull the emergency key out of the card.
- On a Mégane 4 phase 2, open the driver’s door with this key.
- On a Mégane 4 phase 2, put the card on the placement area.
- On a Mégane 4 phase 2, press START.
The driver’s door should open, then the engine should start.
Tip: on some older models, according to user reports, the lock sits under a plastic cap on the door handle.
If nothing works
Stop trying if the second card fails too, a new battery changes nothing and the 12 V battery is in good condition. The Renault network can then diagnose the fault, reprogram the card or replace it.
Have these ready:
- the vehicle registration document;
- a photo ID.
If a card is lost or stolen, tell the dealer. According to user reports, the dealer reprograms the remaining card with a new start code, which disables the lost card, then orders the replacement card. It must match the car’s serial number.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Renault key card not recognised?
The easiest cause to check is the card battery, which lasts about 2 years. The card may also be out of sync, or the car may report an electronic fault. According to user reports, also try the second card, interference and the 12 V battery.
How do you start a Renault when the card is not detected?
Put the card in the reader, or on the placement area depending on the model, then press START if your car has one. On a Mégane 4 phase 2, a flat card battery does not prevent starting. If the door stays locked, open it with the emergency key built into the card.
Do you need to reprogram a Renault key card after changing the battery?
No, according to user reports: the card’s memory is not erased when the battery is removed. The Clio 4 phase 2 manual does not mention reprogramming. It only asks you to press a button on the card 4 times near the car.
Where is the card reader on a Renault?
Its location depends on the model and the phase, and some cars use a placement area instead of a reader. Your car’s manual shows the right spot. Clio 4, Captur, Mégane 4 and Scénic are not necessarily equipped the same way.
Renault key card not recognised on a Clio 4: what can you do?
On a Clio 4 phase 2, insert the card in the reader to start. If the low battery message appears, replace the battery, then press a button on the card 4 times near the car. On a Clio 4 with a start button, the method may differ: check it in the manual.
