Google Pixel 8a: A promising new generation of smartphone

The Pixel 8a, successor to Google’s popular Pixel 7a, is starting to reveal itself thanks to a recent Geekbench listing. This mid-range smartphone offers us a first look at its performance and specifications.

In the list, the Pixel 8a, also codenamed ‘Akita’, appears alongside an underclocked version of Google’s Tensor G3 chip. The Pixel 8a chipset features a main core clocked at 2.91GHz, four performance cores at 2.37GHz and four efficiency units at 1.7GHz. For the GPU, the Mali G715 takes care of the graphics.

Compared to the previously leaked standard Tensor G3, the Pixel 8a appears to offer a slightly lower specification. The standard Tensor G3 was expected to include one cortex-X3 clocked at up to 3 GHz, four cortex-A715 at 2.45 GHz and four cortex-A510 at 2.15 GHz.

Memory-wise, the Pixel 8a is listed with 8GB of RAM and will run Android 14. According to the benchmark results, it scores 1,218 points in single-core mode and 3,175 points in multi-core mode.

For the time being, other details about the Pixel 8a’s full spec sheet remain under wraps. Nevertheless, this new generation of Google’s Pixel 8 series is the subject of various interesting speculations and rumours.

Pixel 8 series ditches SIM card for eSIM

According to some analysts, Google could be set to make a major change with its next range of smartphones. Indeed, reports suggest that the Pixel 8 series could be the second after Apple’s iPhone 14 series to ditch physical SIM card slots altogether in favour of eSIM.

According to Mishaal Rahman, a well-known Android technology researcher, leaked renders of the Pixel 8 series earlier this year show no SIM card slots on the smartphone. Rahman suggests that Google could launch the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro as eSIM-only devices, either in certain markets or globally.

These speculations open the door to new possibilities, including easier management of network operators and phone plans, as well as greater flexibility for users.

As Google’s Pixel 8 series continues to build anticipation among fans, the information revealed so far hints at an even more innovative and practical smartphone experience. We can’t wait to discover all the new things Google has in store for us with the Pixel 8a and its future Pixel 8 series compatriots.
