The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has just been unveiled, which means it’s time to compare it to its predecessor, the Galaxy Z Fold 4, just as we did with the Z Fold 3. As is often the case with phones, many small details can make all the difference. But should we really upgrade to the Z Fold 5? Let’s take a closer look at what’s changed between these two models.
Design is the main change on the Galaxy Z Fold 5, with the integration of a teardrop-shaped hinge that significantly alters the phone’s profile. This new hinge closes the phone completely, preventing dust from accumulating in the fold. What’s more, the phone is now completely flat when closed.
In terms of dimensions, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 is slimmer than its predecessor, with a thickness reduced by 2.4 mm to 13.4 mm. Weight has also been reduced, from 263 g to 253 g. The S Pen stylus has also evolved, with its thickness reduced by 41% to 4.4 mm. Dedicated accessories are also available to accommodate the S Pen.
The Galaxy Z Fold 5 appears to be aligned with the Samsung Galaxy S23 and Galaxy S23+ range in several respects. For example, it now incorporates Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protective glass and its screen achieves a brightness of 1750 nits (1300 on the Fold 4), the same as the S23s. And that’s not all: the Fold 5 is also equipped with the same chip, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, that proved its worth on the S23.
On the software side, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 introduces One UI 5.1.1. While the user interface may seem similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 at first, there are some notable changes. One UI 5.1.1 enhances Pro mode when the smartphone is folded, and the taskbar can accommodate up to twelve apps, improving multitasking capabilities.
Another major change, which may disappoint some potential buyers, is the price increase. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 starts at 1,899 euros for the base configuration with 256 GB storage, compared with 1,799 euros for the Fold 4. And to get the Z Fold 5 with 512 GB option, you’ll have to add 120 euros; and pay up to 2279 euros for 1 TB of memory.
Overall, the Galaxy Z Fold 5 closely resembles its predecessor in many respects. It retains the powerful 12GB LPDDR5 RAM, storage capacity ranging from 256GB to 1TB, a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, Wi-Fi 6E and 5G connectivity.
Battery capacity remains unchanged at 4400 mAh, supporting a 25 W fast charge. The device also offers an impressive software update policy, with four years of Android updates and five years of security patches. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 also retains the IPX8 certification of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, demonstrating Samsung’s technical excellence for optimal waterproofing.
In conclusion, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 introduces notable design changes, aligns itself with the Samsung Galaxy S23 series in some respects, and offers an enhanced user experience with One UI 5.1.1. While the increased price may be a drawback for some, the improvements and features make the Galaxy Z Fold 5 an attractive option for those looking for a cutting-edge foldable smartphone.
