The Apple Watch Series 12 costs €449 (about 295,000 FCFA), exactly what its predecessor cost, and you would struggle to tell the two apart. Everything happens on the back of the case: redesigned heart sensors that read your pulse every five seconds, and a daily fitness score called Readiness. As a first Apple smartwatch, or to retire a model that is three years old, it is the right call. Already wearing a Series 10 or 11? Sit this one out.

Introduction: an Apple Watch Series 12 rebuilt from the inside

Apple unveiled the Apple Watch Series 12 at its 9 September 2026 event, squeezed between two segments devoted to the iPhone 18 Pro. Pre-orders opened that same evening and the watch reached the shelves on Friday 18 September.

What surprises more is the distance between the summer’s rumours and the finished product. A Touch ID fingerprint reader tucked into the side button was expected and, among the optimists, a proper blood pressure reading. Neither turned up. Apple reworked what you cannot see instead: the chip and, above all, the cluster of sensors pressed against the skin, now renamed the Health Sensing System.

Lower down the range, the SE 3 starts at €269 (about 176,000 FCFA). Higher up, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 asks €899 (about 590,000 FCFA) and promises two days of stamina. The Apple Watch Series 12 is aimed at the iPhone owner who runs twice a week and wants to keep an eye on their sleep.

Our newsroom has not had the watch in hand: this page cross-checks Apple’s own data with the reviews already in print.

Verdict in brief: our Apple Watch Series 12 review in a few lines

Verdict in 30 seconds

8.3/10Recommended with an iPhone

Heart-rate tracking becomes far more precise and the Readiness score closes an old gap with Garmin, all without a price rise. One-day battery life and a set of audio features missing in Europe keep it from aiming higher.

For whom iPhone owners buying their first watch or replacing a Series 9 or older, and regular runners.

Avoid if You already wear a Series 10 or 11, you use an Android phone or you want several days away from a charger.

We like

  • Pulse read every five seconds

We like less

  • Battery life still capped at 24 hours
  • Live Rewind and Siri Recap missing in Europe
  • No Android compatibility at all

Three lines of the Apple Watch Series 12 spec sheet deserve a closer look. First the S11 chip, the only real change on that front since the Series 10. Then the ten hours of outdoor workout tracking, up from eight. And the GPS, which is still single-frequency L1.

Apple Watch Series 12 design: ceramic returns, the silhouette stays put

Put the Apple Watch Series 12 next to a Series 11 and good luck working out which is which. Same rounded rectangle, same Digital Crown, same side button. Thickness is 9.7 mm and both sizes, 42 and 46 mm, carry over. On the scales, the small aluminium model comes in at 32.2 g in its GPS version, the large one at 39.5 g.

Three materials, eight finishes

Variety comes from the materials. Aluminium is offered in dark bronze, light gold, black and space grey. Titanium keeps two shades, natural and gold. And ceramic is back in the catalogue after years away, in pearl white or midnight blue. It weighs more, up to 52.9 g in 46 mm.

A handsome object, no question. But at €1,049 (about 688,000 FCFA) it carries exactly the same sensors and the same battery as the base model. You pay for the object. The features are identical.

Water, dust and bands

Water resistance is still rated to 50 metres under the ISO 22810 standard, with IP6X protection against dust. In plain terms, neither the swimming pool nor the dry season and the dust it kicks up is a problem. Scuba diving remains Ultra territory, even if a depth gauge limited to six metres is there for snorkelling.

Display: 2,000 nits and, at last, tougher glass on aluminium

The Apple Watch Series 12 reuses last year’s panel. An always-on LTPO3 OLED, 374 × 446 pixels in 42 mm and 416 × 496 pixels in 46 mm, for a density of 326 pixels per inch. Brightness peaks at 2,000 nits and drops to 1 nit in the dark. Under the midday sun in Abidjan, reading it was already no trouble a year ago.

The useful change is the glass. Aluminium cases, the ones nearly everybody buys, drop Ion-X for a Ceramic Shield 2 that Apple says is 60% tougher. That was the weak spot of the entry-level versions, which picked up hairline scratches in no time. Titanium and ceramic keep their sapphire. No independent durability test has confirmed the figure yet, so a little caution is in order.

Good to know: between 42 and 46 mm, the gap is €50 and roughly 23% of display area (970 against 1,196 mm²). The large size suits people who read their messages on the watch. The small one is easier to forget about at night.

Performance: sensors, GPS, sports and health tracking

The S11 chip in the Apple Watch Series 12 pairs a 64-bit dual-core processor with a four-core Neural Engine and 64 GB of storage. MacRumors mentions 4 GB of RAM, twice the previous generation; Apple does not confirm it. The Verge and 9to5Mac mostly describe a snappier Siri that still trips over complicated requests.

A pulse reading every five seconds

This is the heart of the matter, no pun intended. On the Apple Watch Series 12 the optical sensor gets larger, less power-hungry green LEDs, and the electrode surface grows by around 24% according to the site the5krunner. The direct result: heart rate is sampled every five seconds in the background, from the moment you get up until you go to bed. Heart rate variability, the recovery indicator runners watch so closely, moves to one reading every five minutes at rest.

Out on the road, the published figures hold up. The Verge ran with a Polar H10 chest strap as a reference and never saw a gap of more than five beats. CNET reports a pulse on screen within half a second at the start of a session, where the old model dithered for several seconds.

Two caveats. Apple’s internal study, run on 1,460 runners, left out heavily tattooed forearms, the5krunner points out. And an optical sensor worn on the wrist always lags behind sudden changes of pace, whatever its sampling rate. For short intervals, the chest strap is still the more reliable tool.

GPS: single frequency, ten hours of tracking

The location chip picks up several constellations, but only on the L1 band. Between the tower blocks of the Plateau district in Abidjan, the trace will be less clean than that of an Ultra or a Garmin Fenix 9 Pro. In open country the difference fades. GPS endurance climbs to ten hours, enough for a marathon or a long bike ride, too little for an ultra-trail.

One sour note raised by Clubic: a few buyers report random restarts on brand-new units. Apple has not commented. Worth watching.

Sport and health: what the watch measures, and what it does not diagnose

Readiness, the morning grade

Every day on the Apple Watch Series 12, the Readiness app gives your physical condition a mark from 0 to 10. It blends recent activity, training load, sleep, resting pulse, breathing rate, wrist temperature and heart rate variability. Four levels of advice follow, from recommended rest to a green light for a hard session.

Garmin has offered the equivalent for years, and so has Whoop, for a subscription. At Apple it is free. Good move. Allow seven nights of wear before the first score appears, though: Engadget never got to see one during its review.

The catch: Readiness is reserved for this generation and the Ultra 4, even though earlier models already collect most of this data. The new-sensors argument smells a little of marketing.

The health features, one by one

Here is what the official French spec page lists, small print included:

  • Single-lead electrocardiogram and irregular rhythm alerts, not recommended for under-22s.
  • Hypertension notifications: the watch flags persistent signs over several weeks without showing a blood pressure value. They are not meant for people already diagnosed, nor for pregnant women.
  • Detection of moderate to severe sleep apnoea, from the age of 18.
  • Blood oxygen, presented by Apple as a wellness indicator and not as a medical measurement.
  • Wrist temperature, sleep score, cycle tracking, fall detection and crash detection.

None of these features replaces a doctor. A hypertension alert is a prompt to dig out a cuff monitor and book an appointment; it does not deliver a diagnosis. Availability also varies from one country to the next. Because the sensors have changed, Apple has to get the hypertension alerts cleared again in around thirty countries, Canada and South Africa among them, according to Consomac. France and the European Union are not affected by that delay.

For running, the Apple Watch Series 12 works out cadence, vertical oscillation, ground contact time and a power estimate on its own. Enough to train properly for a half marathon.

Apple Watch Series 12 battery life: one day, and no more

Twenty-four hours. The figure has not moved in years and it does not move in 2026, despite rumours of a bigger battery. In Low Power Mode, Apple promises 38 hours. Published reviews confirm the full day, night included, and WatchGeneration notes that the constant heart-rate readings do not seem to eat into the battery.

A let-down for anyone hoping for better. A Garmin lasts two weeks, an Ultra 4 two days.

Charging makes up part of the lost ground

Apple worked on the other end of the problem. A quarter of an hour on the magnetic puck gives back up to twelve hours of use, against eight on the Series 11. Five minutes cover a ten-hour night of sleep tracking. Getting to 80% still takes about half an hour, and The Verge measured a jump from 20 to 64% in twenty minutes.

So the watch tops up while you shower and eat breakfast. When the power cuts out in Yaoundé in the early evening, fifteen minutes on a power bank is enough to last until the next day.

Check what is in the Apple Watch Series 12 box. Apple supplies the one-metre USB-C magnetic cable but no power adapter. A 20 W brick or better is needed to get the fast charging.

Software: watchOS 27, Siri and an Audio Intelligence delivered by halves

The Apple Watch Series 12 ships with watchOS 27, released on 14 September. The system also runs on the Series 9 to 11, the Ultra 2 to 4 and the SE 3. Among the additions everyone gets: a thumb-and-index pinch to scroll through widgets one-handed, and a Workout Buddy voice coach that can work with no iPhone nearby.

What the watch listens to, and what it does with it

Audio Intelligence is this generation’s software exclusive. Two features are live right now. Sound recognition taps your wrist when a siren, an alarm, a doorbell or a crying baby is heard. The Shazam widget names the music playing around you without being asked. Engadget found the detection oversensitive at times.

The other two are making more noise. Live Rewind shows the last fifteen seconds of a conversation as text, and Siri Recap sums up the exchanges of your day. They do not exist yet: Apple is announcing a beta for late 2026, in English, with an iPhone 16 or later. WatchGeneration adds that they are not planned for the European Union at this stage, and that always-open microphone already worries several reviewers. So do not buy the Apple Watch Series 12 for this if you live in Lyon or Brussels.

Siri and software updates

Apple Intelligence handles French among fifteen languages. The new conversational Siri, on the other hand, starts out in beta and in English; no date has been set for France.

Apple commits to no support period. The only yardstick: watchOS 27 still runs on the Series 9 from 2023.

Compatibility: an iPhone or nothing

The rule has not changed since 2015. Activating the Apple Watch Series 12 takes an iPhone, and more precisely an iPhone 11 or later on iOS 27. An old iPhone 8 forgotten in a drawer will not do.

Apple Watch Series 12 and Android: still no

Pairing with a Galaxy, a Pixel, a Tecno or an Infinix is impossible. If your phone runs Android, look to Samsung, whose model we pitted against Apple’s in our Apple Watch Series 11 vs Galaxy Watch 8 face-off, or to Garmin, which talks to both systems.

The GPS + Cellular version adds an eSIM and the lighter flavour of 5G known as RedCap, for making calls without an iPhone. In France, Orange, SFR and Free support it, for a monthly add-on fee.

Apple Watch Series 12 or Series 11: which one should you buy?

Same display, same battery life, same system. On paper the Apple Watch Series 11 does almost everything the same way, and it gets watchOS 27. What it lacks: Readiness, the closely spaced heart readings, the reinforced glass and the audio features.

Price settles it. Also launched at €449, the Series 11 was seen at around €350 to €360 during spring promotions. Under €370 (about 243,000 FCFA) it becomes a bargain for anyone who could not care less about advanced sports tracking. Above that, we prefer the new one, better equipped to last.

Apple Watch Series 12 price and availability: France, deals, West and Central Africa

In France: the official price list

On Apple’s official French page, entry-level prices are identical to those of 2025:

  • Aluminium GPS: €449 in 42 mm (about 295,000 FCFA), €499 in 46 mm (about 327,000 FCFA).
  • Aluminium GPS + Cellular: €569 (about 373,000 FCFA) and €619 (about 406,000 FCFA).
  • Titanium: €799 (about 524,000 FCFA) and €849 (about 557,000 FCFA).
  • Ceramic: €1,049 (about 688,000 FCFA) and €1,099 (about 721,000 FCFA).

Three weeks after release, retailers are selling the Apple Watch Series 12 at list price. The only offer spotted in early October came from Fnac, which was handing its members €10 in vouchers for every €100 spent, or €40 on the base model, according to Consomac. For a real price cut, you will have to wait for Black Friday.

Where to buy the Apple Watch Series 12 at the best price

La Series 12 garde le design et l'écran de la Series 11 mais inaugure la puce S11 et des capteurs cardiaques redessinés, avec un score Readiness exclusif.

Prices checked on October 1, 2026. Prices and availability may change.

In West and Central Africa: the GPS version and nothing else

Apple does not sell directly in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. The Apple Watch Series 12 gets there through authorised resellers, when they stock it, and mostly through imports: a relative flying back from Paris, a shop in Douala adding its margin. No local retail price was on display in early October; expect to pay more than the 295,000 FCFA of the converted French price.

Do not buy the cellular model. The list of compatible carriers published by Apple names a single African country, South Africa, with MTN and Vodacom. No Cameroonian, Ivorian or Senegalese carrier appears on it, and the watch’s eSIM can only be activated with a partner. You would pay €120 more (about 79,000 FCFA) for an antenna with nothing to say.

As for the warranty, keep the invoice. A purchase in France comes with the seller’s legal guarantee, but invoking it from Abidjan means sending the watch back. Check Apple’s availability page too: the electrocardiogram and hypertension alerts depend on the region.

Conclusion: should you buy the Apple Watch Series 12?

Yes, if you are coming from a long way back. With a Series 8 or older, now cut off from watchOS 27, the combined gain is obvious: a brighter display, hypertension alerts, sleep apnoea detection, express charging, new-generation sensors. For a first purchase, take the Apple Watch Series 12 in aluminium with GPS.

No, if you bought a Series 10 or 11. You would be spending several hundred euros on a fitness score and a more finely sampled pulse.

Our pick

The 42 mm aluminium GPS version, at €449 (about 295,000 FCFA). This Apple Watch Series 12 has the same sensors as the ceramic one costing over €1,000, and it is the only variant that is fully usable where the eSIM is not supported.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Apple Watch Series 12 cost in France?

The Apple Watch Series 12 in aluminium with GPS costs €449 in 42 mm (about 295,000 FCFA) and €499 in 46 mm. Add €120 for the GPS + Cellular version. Titanium starts at €799, ceramic at €1,049. In early October 2026 French retailers are applying the official price, with voucher offers only. Proper discounts are expected on Black Friday.

What is the battery life of the Apple Watch Series 12?

For the Apple Watch Series 12, Apple quotes up to 24 hours of normal use, 38 hours with Low Power Mode switched on and 10 hours of outdoor workout with GPS. Published reviews confirm a full day, night included, but nothing beyond. Charging partly compensates: fifteen minutes return about a dozen hours, five minutes cover a night of sleep tracking.

Does the Apple Watch Series 12 measure blood pressure?

Not in the way a blood pressure monitor does. No systolic or diastolic value appears. Its hypertension notifications analyse data from the optical sensor over several weeks and alert you if persistent signs show up. Apple specifies that they are not for under-22s, people already diagnosed or pregnant women. If you get an alert, check your blood pressure with a cuff device and talk to a doctor.

Can the cellular version be used in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal?

As things stand, no. Apple lists no partner carrier in these three countries, and the watch’s eSIM only activates with a listed carrier. On the continent, only South Africa appears. Roaming, for its part, depends on the plan taken out in a covered country. Better to buy the GPS version, €120 cheaper, which goes through the iPhone for calls and messages.
