The AirPods Pro 3 are still, a year after launch, the most complete earbuds Apple has to sell: noise cancellation that ranks among the best around, eight hours of quoted listening time and a heart rate sensor in each ear. Their official price has not moved, €249 (about 163,000 FCFA), but retailers regularly knock them down to around €200. With an iPhone, the purchase is easy to defend. Without one, walk on by.
Introduction: one year on, what are the AirPods Pro 3 still worth?
Apple revealed the AirPods Pro 3 on 9 September 2025, on the same stage as the iPhone 17, then put them on shelves ten days later. Three years separated this generation from the previous one. The brand used the gap to redraw the earbud, fit an optical sensor in each ear and take €30 off the price tag.
Since then, the range has shifted around them. The 9 September 2026 event brought the AirPods 5 on stage, which inherit noise cancellation for €149 or €169. The AirPods Pro 3, for their part, received neither a successor nor an official price cut.
Our newsroom has not handled this pair. This page draws on the specifications Apple publishes, reviews from the specialist press and twelve months of buyer feedback, the unflattering kind included. The target audience takes shape quickly: iPhone owners who spend time on the metro, on planes or on intercity coaches, and athletes with no smartwatch.
Verdict in brief: our view of the AirPods Pro 3 in late 2026
Verdict in 30 seconds
Top-tier noise cancellation, eight hours of quoted listening and heart rate tracking: this is the most complete spec sheet in Apple's range. The bass-heavy sound, the stray noises reported during the first year and the reliance on the iPhone stop us recommending them to everyone.

Three figures sum up the AirPods Pro 3. First, eight hours per charge with noise cancellation, two more than the previous generation. Next, the IP57 rating, which covers the case as well. The third is less glorious: total battery life drops to 24 hours, down from 30. What Apple gave the earbuds, it took back from their case.
AirPods Pro 3 design: a familiar outline, reworked geometry
From a metre away, nothing sets the AirPods Pro 3 apart from their predecessors. Short stem, glossy white plastic, and still no other colour. The change hides in the angle. The tip now points straighter into the ear canal and the body of the earbud has slimmed down: 5.55 g apiece.
A lighter case that loses its button
The case weighs 43.99 g, a touch less than the old one, and is 62.2 mm wide. The charging light now sits hidden beneath the plastic. The pairing button is gone, replaced by a double tap on the front, and TechRadar is annoyed by it: resetting the earbuds has become more of a chore.
Inside, the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip lets the Find My app track the case down to the nearest centimetre.
A nasty surprise on unboxing: no cable. Apple says so on its store, the pair ships without a USB-C lead. At €249, the penny-pinching shows.
IP57: sweat, rain and dust
The rating goes from IP54 to IP57, for the earbuds and their case alike. The first digit concerns dust, the second water: the standard provides for temporary immersion at shallow depth. A rainy-season cloudburst in Douala or the red dust of the harmattan should not trouble them. Swimming with them is still out of the question.
Comfort and fit: five sizes of foam-lined tips
Apple ships the AirPods Pro 3 with five pairs of tips, from XXS to L. The smallest is new and a real help for narrow ears. Each silicone tip holds a layer of foam that strengthens passive isolation before the electronics even get involved.
Published reviews agree on stability. Mac4Ever finds them comfortable even during a workout, and TechRadar notes that they do not budge when you shake your head hard.
Not everyone is won over. On forums, buyers used to the old shape describe discomfort after an hour or two. Try at least two sizes during the return window: according to Mac4Ever, swapping tips also changes how much bass you perceive.
Good to know: an in-ear bud closes off the ear canal. If you cannot tolerate that, look at an open-fit model such as the AirPods 5 instead.
Display: none at all, everything runs by touch and from the iPhone
There is neither a panel nor any read-out on the AirPods Pro 3 case. Controls go through the stem: a press to pause, a long press to flip between noise cancellation and Transparency mode, a vertical swipe for volume.
Everything else is set on the iPhone. No AirPods app exists: the options are scattered across Settings, Health and Fitness. TechRadar counts that as a flaw, and we share the complaint.
Performance: sound quality, noise cancellation, calls
The H2 chip still powers the AirPods Pro 3, as it did the previous generation. The gains come from the acoustics, the microphones and the algorithms.
A generous, bass-rich sound that splits opinion
Here is the sore point. French retailer Fnac’s lab gives the frequency response 6.7 out of 10 and speaks of a signature so heavy in the low end that it finds it stifling. Mac4Ever describes it as a little too weighty, especially at low volume. TechRadar, by contrast, hears an energetic sound with a wide stage, while ranking Technics and Bowers & Wilkins ahead for detail. Only distortion gets everyone to agree: 9.8 out of 10 from the Fnac lab.
The good news dates from 15 September 2026. With iOS 27, Apple at last added a custom equaliser that acts on bass, mids and treble from the settings. Two notches down at the bottom of the spectrum are enough to calm things. It took a year.
Noise cancellation: their best argument
Apple claims that the AirPods Pro 3 attenuate noise twice as strongly as the Pro 2 and four times more than the 2019 model. TechRadar talks of a wall of silence, achieved without the pressure on the eardrums that some competitors produce. Fnac’s measurements add a useful caveat: the gain is clear at low frequencies, whereas mids and highs are reportedly filtered slightly less well than by the previous generation.
The drone of a coach engine between Yaoundé and Douala, the neighbour’s generator during a power cut, the whoosh of an air conditioner or a jet engine: that is where they shine. Voices in an open-plan office or sharp car horns get through more.
Transparency and calls
Transparency mode lets outside sounds in with a naturalness that Mac4Ever ranks above the competition.
Calls improve little. In a quiet room, your voice comes across well. On a busy street, the same review recommends holding the phone again. We expected better.
Whistling and stray noises: the first-year saga
As early as October 2025, AirPods Pro 3 users described a high-pitched whistle that came and went at random with noise cancellation on. Others suffered it on planes. Exchanges at the Apple Store did not always solve the problem, according to WatchGeneration and iPhoneSoft.
Apple has never publicly acknowledged a defect. The firmware of 14 January 2026, numbered 8B34, seems to have steadied the filtering for some of the people affected, Macworld reports, although the whistling has not disappeared everywhere.
Nothing lets us put a number on the share of units concerned. Buy from a retailer that takes returns without arguing, then listen to the pair in silence, noise cancellation on, during the first few days.
Heart rate sensor and hearing health: useful, with no diagnostic value
Each earbud carries an optical sensor that shines infrared light on the skin 256 times a second. The pulse readings feed into the iPhone’s Fitness app.
YouTuber The Quantified Scientist compared these readings with a Polar H10 chest strap, the benchmark of its kind. On a bike, the correlation reaches 0.99. In weight training, 0.96 standing up, with signal dropouts when lying on a bench. Running gave him unusable data: the shape of the ear matters enormously.
This is a tool for tracking workouts. Apple does not present it as a medical device, and a watch like the Apple Watch Series 12 remains far more complete in this area.
Hearing Test and the Hearing Aid feature
The hearing test and loud sound protection have worked in France since late 2024 on compatible AirPods Pro. The Hearing Aid feature is a murkier case. Apple opens it country by country. WatchGeneration wrote in December 2025 that it was still missing in France; an iPhoneSoft article from May 2026 states the opposite, and its own readers dispute it. Check Apple’s website before buying for that reason.
For Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal, we found no announcement. And a reminder of the obvious: these features replace neither an audiogram nor an audiologist.
AirPods Pro 3 battery life: eight hours per charge, a case with less stamina
Apple quotes up to eight hours of listening with noise cancellation, against six before, and six and a half hours with heart rate tracking. A Paris to Douala flight lasts a little under seven hours: on paper, the trip goes by in one go.
Reviews diverge. Mac4Ever says it reached the promised eight hours. TechRadar records about five and a half hours on average with every feature active. Keep that range in mind.
Case and charging
The total with the case tops out at 24 hours. In practice, it only refills the earbuds twice in full, where the old one managed four. A weekend away from a socket remains possible. A week somewhere with patchy electricity does not.
Five minutes in the case restore roughly an hour of listening. The case itself charges over USB-C, on a MagSafe or Qi pad, or on an Apple Watch puck.
One last point, common to all wireless earbuds: users cannot replace the batteries, and their capacity melts away over the charge cycles.
Software: iOS 27 fixes the sound, Live Translation comes of age
The AirPods Pro 3 get better through their updates. Firmware 9A348, rolled out alongside iOS 27 in mid-September 2026, brought three things: the custom equaliser, heart rate sensor compatibility with GymKit gym machines and precise finding from an Apple Watch. The new Siri is supported too, but Mac4Ever points out that it was not available in the European Union at launch.
Live Translation: ten languages, a recent iPhone required
Missing from Europe at launch for regulatory reasons, Live Translation has worked there since iOS 26.2, in December 2025. The person in front of you speaks, noise cancellation turns their voice down and you hear the translated version. French, English, German, Spanish, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Korean and Chinese are supported.
The condition is a hardware one. You need an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, so an iPhone 15 Pro at the very least, an iPhone 17 Pro or an iPhone 18 Pro for example. TechRadar finds the result convincing once setup is out of the way. For haggling with a supplier in Guangzhou, the tool earns its keep.
AirPods Pro 3 Android compatibility: the bare minimum
Yes, the AirPods Pro 3 pair with any Bluetooth phone, lid open, after a double tap on the front of the case that makes the light blink. Music plays, calls work, and a long press on the stem still toggles between noise cancellation and Transparency. The list of what vanishes, compiled by WatchGeneration, is a good deal longer:
- the heart rate sensor, which no Android app can read;
- Live Translation, tied to Apple Intelligence;
- automatic switching between devices and instant pairing;
- locating the earbuds and their case;
- the equaliser, the ear tip fit test and the hearing health features;
- firmware updates, which go through an Apple device.
Apple knows how to do otherwise when it wants to. Its Powerbeats Pro 2, sold under the Beats brand, send heart rate data to an Android phone. So the choice is a commercial one.
In countries where Android sits in the overwhelming majority of pockets, spending 163,000 FCFA to use only half the product makes no sense.
AirPods Pro 3 or AirPods 5: thirty euros apart on promotion
The September 2026 newcomers cost €149 (about 98,000 FCFA), or €169 (about 111,000 FCFA) with the wireless charging case. They share the H2 chip and the IP57 rating. Their open design, with no tip, isolates less by nature.
Two gaps weigh heavily. Apple quotes only four to five hours per charge with noise cancellation, half of what the AirPods Pro 3 promise. And no heart rate sensor is on the menu. When the Pro model falls to €199, the difference from the €169 version shrinks to thirty euros. At that point we take it without hesitating.
AirPods Pro 3 price and availability: France, promotions, West and Central Africa
In France: €249 at Apple, far less elsewhere
On Apple’s French online store, the AirPods Pro 3 have stayed at €249 (about 163,000 FCFA), engraving included. That is the price not to pay. Price tracking by the specialist press tells another story: €229 (about 150,000 FCFA) in February 2026, €209 (about 137,000 FCFA) on Amazon in early April, then €198 (about 130,000 FCFA) in June, the floor recorded by Consomac.
With Black Friday approaching, waiting a few weeks makes sense if the day’s price is above €220 (about 144,000 FCFA).

In West and Central Africa: imports, warranty and counterfeits
Apple runs no store of its own in Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. Sales go through authorised resellers, such as the iCenter that opened at Douala Grand Mall in 2022, and through a crowd of independent shops. We could not find a verifiable local price: expect to pay more than the 163,000 FCFA a straight conversion gives. Many people keep it simpler. A relative buys the AirPods Pro 3 in France during a promotion and slips them into a suitcase.
Hold on to the invoice: the one-year warranty is easier to claim in the country of purchase. Ask the authorised reseller in your city, too, whether it will service a product bought abroad.
Good to know: copies of the AirPods Pro are everywhere and well imitated, box included. A new pair offered for 60,000 FCFA at a market or on social media is a counterfeit. Enter the serial number on Apple’s coverage check site.

Alternatives to the AirPods Pro 3
Ray-Ban Meta (Gen 2)
The AirPods 5 suit anyone who refuses ear tips. An Apple Watch does far better for the heart than the AirPods Pro 3. As for the Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2, they play sound through their temples and work just as well on Android, with no isolation whatsoever.
Conclusion: should you buy the AirPods Pro 3 in late 2026?
Yes, on three conditions. You have an iPhone. You can live with in-ear buds. And you do not pay Apple’s price. At around €200, the AirPods Pro 3 have no equivalent at Apple: high-level noise filtering, enough stamina for a working day, credible heart rate tracking. The September update even erased the main complaint about the sound.
The whistling saga is a reason to buy where returns are simple. If your journeys are short and your ears sensitive, the AirPods 5 will do the job for less.
Our pick
AirPods Pro 3: the Apple earbuds to choose for travelling and exercising with an iPhone, as long as you aim for a promotion under €220 (about 144,000 FCFA) and not the official €249.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of the AirPods Pro 3 in France and in Cameroon?
Apple sells the AirPods Pro 3 for €249 in France, roughly 163,000 FCFA. Online retailers often go lower: €209 in early April 2026 and €198 in June, according to press reports. In Cameroon, no official price is published. Authorised resellers and import shops set their own, generally above the straight conversion because of shipping and taxes.
Are the AirPods Pro 3 waterproof?
The AirPods Pro 3 carry IP57 certification, and so does their charging case. The rating guarantees protection from dust and from a short dip in shallow water. Rain and perspiration are therefore fine. They are not made for swimming, and water resistance fades as the product wears. Dry them before putting them back in the case.
Can you use the AirPods Pro 3 with an Android phone?
Yes, over plain Bluetooth. Listening, calls, noise cancellation and Transparency mode all work, along with the basic gestures on the stem. What you give up is the heart rate sensor, Live Translation, locating, the equaliser, the fit test and updates, all of which need an Apple device. Earbuds designed for Android, supplied with a full app, are the better buy in that case.
Is the hearing aid feature available in France and in Africa?
The hearing test and loud sound protection have been offered in France since late 2024. For the Hearing Aid feature, reserved for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss, sources contradict each other about the French situation in 2026: consult Apple’s website. No announcement has been spotted for Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire or Senegal. These tools do not amount to a diagnosis.
