Insta360 Ace Pro vs GoPro Hero 12 Black – Which action camera is right for you?

Insta360, a well-established company in the field of innovative action cameras, has recently expanded its range by launching the Insta360 Ace Pro, a more conventional action camera that competes directly with the brand new GoPro Hero 12 Black.

Touch screen and design

One of the most notable differences is the design of the screens. The Insta360 Ace Pro is distinguished by its 2.4-inch flip-down touchscreen, offering a unique preview experience. With a hinge allowing a 90-degree view from above and a 180-degree view for selfies and vlogs, the Ace Pro is a more versatile watch than the GoPro Hero 12 Black, which offers a 2.27-inch touchscreen on the back and a smaller 1.4-inch screen on the front. This ergonomic advantage could be a deciding factor for many users.

Video quality:

In terms of video resolution, the Insta360 Ace Pro seems to dominate on paper with its impressive 8K capabilities. However, it’s important to note that frame rate is limited to 24 fps at this resolution, often prompting users to opt for 4K resolution at 60 fps for fast-paced action. On the other hand, the GoPro Hero 12 Black offers 5.3K resolution at up to 60 fps, as well as 4K at 60 fps. Despite the Ace Pro’s higher resolution, our experience revealed that the GoPro’s unedited video offered a more pleasing visual quality in normal lighting conditions.

Low-light performance:

Sensor size plays a crucial role in low-light performance, and here the Insta360 Ace Pro has the edge. With a 1/1.3-inch sensor, it slightly outperforms the GoPro Hero 12 Black, which has a 1/1.9-inch sensor. The Ace Pro’s larger sensor, combined with AI-assisted noise reduction, makes this camera the ideal option for capturing sharp, detailed images even in low-light environments.

Mounting system:

A distinctive feature of the Insta360 Ace Pro is its magnetic clip, allowing easy attachment to a variety of objects such as bikes, helmets, surfboards and selfie perches. However, some users have reported difficulties with the attachment, highlighting a certain fragility of the magnetic mechanism.

The GoPro Hero 12 is equipped with integrated mounting fingers that ensure secure attachment to more than 50 mounts, modules and accessories. These include the Max Lens Mod 2.0, the Media Mod, the Light Mod and the Volta battery grip/tripod.

In short, the Insta360 Ace Pro and the GoPro Hero 12 Black each have their own distinct strengths. The Insta360 stands out for its fold-down touchscreen, 8K resolution and low-light performance, while the GoPro excels in daylight video quality. The choice between the two will depend on individual priorities, whether for attachment versatility, video quality, or specific features. For adventure enthusiasts, the Insta360 Ace Pro could be the ideal choice, while budding filmmakers may find their match in the GoPro Hero 12 Black.
