How to use Google Authenticator on Twitter

Twitter Blue will be required to use two-factor authentication via SMS starting March 20. The change, which was officially revealed earlier this month, is undeniably significant. Twitter says it would simply disable two-factor authentication for anyone still using SMS keys and not paying for Blue starting March 20.

Twitter describes the change as a form of security in a blog post, saying SMS authentication is being “abused” by “bad actors.” The app will still support two-factor authentication via physical security keys or a third-party authentication app, however. That’s where Google Authenticator comes in on Twitter.

How to set up Google Authenticator on Twitter

Google Authenticator is a simple and efficient way to generate two-factor tokens for a range of different applications and services. Integrating it with Twitter is also very simple. Follow the steps below to get started:

  • The first step is to install Google Authenticator on your mobile device. The app is available for Android and iOS via Google Play Store and the App Store.
  • Next, access the “Security and Account Access” section of your Twitter account.
  • To access the “Security and Account Access” section, tap on your profile picture;
  • Go to “Settings and Support”; and
  • Choose “Settings and Privacy”.
  • Now select “Security and Account Access”.
  • You can use this URL on a desktop computer.
  • Then, under the security option, choose “two-factor authentication”.
  • Now, in the pop-up window that appears, choose “authentication app”, enter your password and follow the rest of the instructions to get started.

Twitter will then produce a QR code that you can scan with the Google Authenticator app. After scanning the QR code, your accounts will be linked and two-factor codes will be displayed in the Authenticator app.

Of course, when you log in to Twitter, you will be prompted to enter the code that the application displays at the same time. This code changes every 30 seconds. Besides using Google Authenticator on Twitter, you can try 1password, Authy or any other application like these mentioned.
