For some time the world of mobile telephony has become more and more invaded by 5G handsets and the manufacture of foldable smartphones. This trend is shared by several smartphone manufacturers already like Royole, Motorola, Samsung, Microsoft, LG to name a few. It is in this momentum that Royole is launching a next-generation foldable phone for a very affordable price, if the specifications of the phone are to be considered. In fact, the value for money of the Flexpai 2 is very amazing, it looks like a gift price because, the Flexpai 2 comes with 5G, a Snapdragon 865 chipset, a 4550 mAh battery and a quad camera system. It’s also cheaper than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2.

Chinese phone producer Royole put itself on the map when it beat Samsung and Huawei to release the world’s first foldable phone last year. Today, the company launched a next-generation version of that phone, the Flexpai 2, in an online event streamed from Shenzhen, China.

Royole’s latest foldable, which opens and closes like a book, expands to a 7.8-inch screen when its outward-facing flexible display is deployed. According to Bill Liu, CEO of Royole, it also has the latest Snapdragon 865 chipset, a 4450 mAh battery, a quad camera module and 5G capabilities for nine different bands covering regions such as the United States, Europe and China.

Compared to its predecessor, the Flexpai 2 has a 40% thinner and lighter design, Liu said. The Flexpai 2 is about 0.24 inches thick flat and about half an inch folded, which appears to be slightly thinner than Samsung’s Galaxy Fold 2. Despite the improvements made to the latter.

One of the main improvements, according to the company, has been to its hinge, which runs along the back of the device. Royole claims the wear-resistant and “mechanically robust” hinge can withstand 1.8 million bends.

The original FlexPai, which was unveiled at CES 2019, features a 7.8-inch foldable AMOLED display made of flexible plastic and 1440p resolution. But the foldable has drawn widespread criticism for its clunky, prototype-like design, buggy software and unimpressive user interface. As for the first generation foldable, Royale confirms that the initial problems of this smartphone have been solved. Since its launch, the original FlexPai has been largely forgotten due to fierce competition from foldable phone competitors such as the Motorola Razr, Samsung Galaxy Fold and Huawei Mate XS.

Price and availability

The Flexpai 2 is available on Royole’s website for 9999 yuan converted to around $1470 and £1150. It must be said that this convention is variant. It will run on Android, Water OS 2.0 and will support multiple windows, allowing you to split screens across multiple apps and drag and drop between them.
