Google has chosen to start the year with a new mobile OS project. The future rival of IOS is already available in beta version, waiting for its stable version by the end of the year. As far as features are concerned, the changes made will radically change users’ lives. Among the new features, attention is focused on ultra HDR, which should significantly improve our photos. Will Android 14 have as many advantages as iOS 16? We’ll answer that right away by sifting through the latest features.

Operating system release date

Google has unveiled the progressive rollout schedule for Android 14 and so far the dates have been met. Currently the software is available in beta phase and will be available until July 2023. As always, each new Android update has its own name; this time it will be Upside Down Cake. The final version of the OS according to the company’s forecasts should be open to all between late August and early September 2023.

IOS 16 for its part was launched in September 2022, a few days after the release of the iPhone 14. The system seems to be working well so far and has undergone some minor changes. Since the project is still in development, you can only get the IOS 16.4 beta version. It’s hard to know when the final version will be available, as Apple hasn’t mentioned a specific date. However, IOS 16.5 is expected to mark the last update to IOS 16.

IOS features borrowed from Android 14

It’s no secret that privacy is increased on IOS. version 16 allows users to sort the content they can access, well on Android 14 this is possible too. The new privacy policy allows you to select the media to which applications have access. It’s no longer just about giving full access to storage, but choosing what is accessible. This is a nice boost to privacy, and avoid sending confidential files by mistake.

IOS 16 goes further with this privacy feature, even allowing to manage accesses based on the user. So an intruder who doesn’t have your access will have your phone, without being able to read your data. Even more incredible, access to the clipboard requires authorization. For those who wonder why, remember that everything you copy from your screen goes to the clipboard. We’re talking about URLs, passwords (for those who don’t remember them and keep them in a file) or any other text.

Does Android 14 allow satellite calling like the iPhone 14?

Mountain View is planning to introduce a satellite emergency call system based on Android 14. Thus, even Android users will be able to contact help without having access to the network or Wi-Fi. Hiroshi Lockeimer, Google’s senior vice president of platforms and ecosystems comments:

“It’s crazy to think about user experiences for phones that can connect to satellites. When we launched the G1 in 2008, it was hard to make 3G and WiFi work. Now we’re designing for satellites. Cool! We can’t wait to help our partners build all this into the next version of Android!” It’s worth noting here that satellite emergency calling was implemented with iPhone 14, whose tasks are driven by iOS 16.

New apps on Android 14 and IOS 16

From now on, it will no longer be possible to install APK files that are deemed obsolete on Android 14. This means that it will be impossible to install old versions of applications from third-party stores. Another improvement that Android 14 brings is the blocking of pseudo applications that would improve the performance of a smartphone. In reality, these applications sometimes consume more resources than they save. Android 14 will therefore block applications that use the KillBackgroundProcesses API.

Google expects the “Ultra HDR” format to be the default format for the camera app. Photos taken with this format can be saved in the high dynamic range. They will then be able to be viewed as is on high-end devices when Android 14 is released. However, Ultra HDR will only be supported by the Google Photos application.

Speaking of applications, iOS 16.5 should bring a sports notification bar in Apple News. All you’ll have to do is choose your favorite sport, as well as the teams, and you’ll be kept up to date on scores, highlight videos and more. Siri fans get a new command to start screen recordings.

Personal options in Android 14 and iOS 16

The upcoming Android system will allow you to set regional preferences (temperature units, calendar type, first day of the week). There is no certainty that this feature will appear in the final version, but Google is testing it to facilitate the user experience. In addition, it will be possible to choose a language to use for each of the installed applications. In addition, the wind carries whispers that users will be able to customize the lock screen.

The IOS 16 realizes, while there are still whispers at Google. The lock screen is certainly one of the interfaces you look at the most on your smartphone. IOS 16 allows you to customize your lock screen just like the Android home screen. Simply press and hold your finger on your screen to change the lock screen. Each proposed style changes the background color filter and font.

Another feature that has recently made an appearance is live notification. As iPhone users know, notifications used to invade the lock screen. Rest assured, this has been fixed with IOS 16 which offers a vertical carousel display. Specifically, the screen will only display one notification until you decide to scroll through the list.
