Your Nintendo Switch won’t turn on: the screen stays black and the POWER button does nothing. Start with the battery: when it is nearly empty, Nintendo says it needs 15 to 30 minutes of charging, so allow 30 minutes for this first try, on the Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite or Switch 2.
Common symptoms and causes when the Nintendo Switch won’t turn on
- Black screen, no reaction to the POWER button.
- A charging icon flashes briefly at the top left of the screen, then nothing: the battery is almost empty.
- AC adapter damaged, not approved by Nintendo or poorly plugged in, or plugged into a power strip.
- Console stuck in sleep mode or crashed: you need to force a shutdown.
- Black screen on the TV because of the dock or the HDMI cable, while the console itself is fine.
- Damaged USB-C port on the console, with bent metal inside.
- Missing system update.
Before you start
Keep the official adapter for your console within reach: HAC-002 for the Switch, OLED and Lite, NGN-01 for the Switch 2. If you have set a parental controls PIN, write it down too.
Warning: never puncture, bend or heat a lithium battery. A swollen battery can no longer be charged and must be taken to a collection point. Work on a non-flammable surface.
Warning: if the console’s casing is bulging, do not charge it, do not open it, and go straight to repair. The Nintendo pages we checked do not cover this case: the advice comes from a third-party source.
Warning: opening the console can void the warranty. Check the warranty end date first. None of the solutions in this guide requires opening it.
Warning: solution 4 deletes some data. Software on the microSD card becomes unusable, so back up first if the console still starts.
Solution 1: charge with the original adapter
With a nearly empty battery, the screen stays off. Only a charging icon appears briefly at the top left.
Tip: watch the screen the moment you plug in. The icon does not stay on, and it is easy to miss.
- On the adapter of a Switch, Lite or OLED, look for the
MOD. HAC-002mark, printed underneath the adapter where the cord comes out. - On the Switch 2, look for the
MOD. NGN-01mark, printed on the side of the adapter. - Inspect the cord: frayed or split wire, loose connector.
- Plug the adapter into the console and into the wall. On the Switch 2, use a wall outlet, not a power strip.
- Let it charge for 15 to 30 minutes.
- Press POWER.
- Once the console is back on, install the update from System Settings > System > System Update.
The console should start normally. If nothing happens, try another Switch adapter: if it works, replace the original. Nintendo advises against unapproved adapters.

Nintendo Switch 2 won’t turn on: extra checks
The Switch 2 has no power LED, so don’t look for one. No charging icon? Run these three checks.
- Plug the adapter into the other USB-C port, at the top or bottom of the console.
- Try the adapter on another USB-C Nintendo device, such as a Switch 2 Pro Controller or the dock.
- Inspect both USB-C ports on the console.
The charging icon should appear on one of the two ports. Bent metal inside a port means a repair.
Good to know: a Switch HAC-002 adapter charges the Switch 2 directly, but not through the dock. A replacement NGN-01 adapter is sold at the Nintendo Store.
Solution 2: force a shutdown, then turn it back on
A console stuck in sleep mode is not off, even if the screen is black. A forced shutdown deletes nothing.
- Take the console out of the dock.
- Unplug the adapter from the wall and from the console.
- Wait 30 seconds.
- Hold POWER down for at least 12 seconds.
- Release POWER.
- Plug the adapter back into the console, then into the wall outlet.
- Press POWER once.
The console should start. If it stays black, repeat the steps holding POWER for 20 seconds, then 30 seconds as a last try.
Tip: time the press with your phone. Going by feel, people often let go too early.
Good to know: Nintendo’s official pages don’t all give the same duration, which is why there are three steps of 12, 20 and 30 seconds.
Once the console is running again, update it. On the Switch, Lite and OLED, shut it down normally from then on like this: remove the game card and the microSD card, hold POWER for about 3 seconds, then open Power Options > Turn Off. A short press only puts the console to sleep.
Solution 3: test the dock and the TV output
This test shows whether only the console’s own screen is at fault. It applies to the Switch and Switch OLED, with an HAC-007 or HEG-007 dock (the model with an Ethernet port). The Switch Lite is not compatible with the dock.
- Attach the Joy-Con to the console.
- Plug the adapter into the dock and into the wall outlet.
- Connect the dock to the TV with the HDMI cable.
- Turn the TV on.
- Place the console in the dock, with the screen facing the front of the dock.
The picture should appear on the TV. The console’s screen turns off in the dock: that is normal.

Nintendo Switch OLED won’t turn on outside the dock
Picture on the TV but a black screen outside the dock, on an OLED as on a Switch: the touchscreen may be faulty. Charge the console for at least 30 minutes, then install the latest update. If it stays off, move on to repair.
Solution 4: use Maintenance Mode without deleting save data
Maintenance Mode is a menu that opens at startup. On the Switch 2, it is called the Restore Menu and opens with the same button combination.
On the Switch, Lite and OLED, the path is Maintenance Mode > Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data > Next > Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data. On the Switch 2, it is Restore Menu > Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data > Next > Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data.
Warning: the next step deletes some data. Software on the microSD card (microSD Express on the Switch 2) becomes unusable. Save data, screenshots and user information are kept, as are videos on the Switch 2.
Warning: do not use this option if you are selling or giving away the console. You then need a full factory reset, which erases everything.
- Turn the console off: the menu does not open in sleep mode or while the console is on. Force a shutdown if needed.
- Hold down the volume + and volume – buttons.
- Press POWER without letting go of the volume buttons.
- Keep the volume buttons held until the menu appears.
- Choose “Initialize Console Without Deleting Save Data”.
- Enter the parental controls PIN if you have set one.
- Read the information, then select Next.
- Confirm a second time with the reset button shown on screen.
At the end, your save data and screenshots should still be there.
If nothing works
Stop after solutions 1 and 2, and after solution 3 if your console works with the dock: charging, forced shutdown, a test with another official adapter and, on the Switch 2, a test of the other USB-C port. Maintenance Mode in solution 4 remains optional. Then submit an online repair request from the Repairs page of Nintendo Support.
Include the AC adapter, and the dock for the tests. We could not confirm the length of the warranty or its exclusions, including for the battery: check them with Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch Lite won’t turn on after charging
Once you have done the charging and update steps, send it straight in for repair.
Frequently asked questions
Why won’t my Nintendo Switch turn on anymore?
The cause may be a nearly empty battery, a damaged or unapproved adapter, or a console stuck in sleep mode. A black screen on the TV can also come from the dock or the HDMI cable. On the Switch 2, check both USB-C ports as well.
How do I force restart a Nintendo Switch?
Hold POWER for at least 12 seconds, then 20 or 30 seconds if the console doesn’t respond. Release the button, then press it once. This forced shutdown deletes nothing.
How long should I charge a completely dead Switch?
Allow 15 to 30 minutes with an undamaged adapter, then press POWER. If the touchscreen stays off, Nintendo asks you to charge for at least 30 minutes before installing the latest update.
How do I send my Switch to Nintendo for repair?
Submit an online request from the Repairs page of Nintendo Support. Include the AC adapter, and the dock for the tests. For the Switch Lite, you send it in directly after the charging and update steps.
