If your PS5 controller is not connecting, you will see it right away: the light bar blinks without stopping, or the controller won’t turn on at all. The first thing to try is pairing it again over USB, as long as the cable carries data and not just power.
Common symptoms and causes
- The light bar blinks while connecting and never settles: the controller is not paired with the console.
- The controller stays off or stops responding: flat battery, a charge-only cable or a faulty USB port.
- The controller worked, then stopped: the pairing was lost after use with another device, or its memory slot was overwritten.
- Outdated controller or console software.
- Hardware fault: the controller’s battery or USB-C port.
Before you start
Have the USB cable supplied with the console ready, or any USB cable that transfers data. For the reset, you will need a pin or a similar tool, which is not included. This guide applies to the DualSense and the DualSense Edge; the reset button location described below is the one on the DualSense and has not been checked on the Edge.
Warning: the controller contains a built-in lithium battery. Never puncture, bend or heat a lithium battery, and work on a non-flammable surface. A swollen battery will no longer charge and must be taken to a collection point, so stop using a controller that is swollen or gets hot, and do not open it.
Warning: opening the controller may void the warranty; check the warranty end date first.
Solution 1: connect the controller with a USB data cable
- Turn on the PS5.
- Connect the controller to the console with the supplied USB cable.
- If the controller is off, press the PS button.
- Watch the light bar: it blinks while connecting.
- Wait for the player indicator to light up: pairing has succeeded.
- Unplug the cable to play wirelessly.
The player indicator stays lit. The controller is ready.
Tip: a charge-only cable powers the controller but transmits no data, so pairing fails. If a cable charges your phone but won’t let you copy photos to a computer, it is probably this type of cable. Go back to the supplied cable or use a charge-and-sync cable, and try another USB port on the console.

If the supplied cable is lost or faulty, here is where to find a USB-C cable that transfers data.

Solution 2: charge the controller
- Plug the controller into a USB port on the PS5, with the console on or in rest mode.
- If nothing happens, switch to another USB port on the console.
- Try another charge-and-data cable, or a compliant USB charger.
- Press the PS button to open the control center, then choose Accessories to see the battery level.
While charging, the battery icon animates with a lightning bolt. Charging is complete when the icon stops animating and shows three bars.
Solution 3: reset the controller with the reset button
Holding the PS button for 10 seconds does not reset the controller, despite advice that still circulates. The real reset button is hidden on the back.
Good to know: according to a summary of Sony’s English-language support, not confirmed elsewhere, the reset does not change the pairing settings. Pair the controller again over the cable straight afterwards anyway, as in the last steps.
- Turn off the PS5.
- Unplug the USB cable from the controller.
- Find the small hole on the back of the controller, next to the Sony logo.
- Press the reset button with a pin and hold it for at least 5 seconds.
- Connect the controller to the PS5 with the supplied USB cable.
- Press the PS button.
The light bar blinks, then the player indicator lights up: the controller is paired again.
Solution 4: pair the controller wirelessly
This method pairs a second controller without a cable, using a controller that already works.
- On the controller that is already paired, open Settings > Accessories > General > Bluetooth Accessories.
- On the controller you want to connect, hold the Create and PS buttons together.
- Select the controller when it appears on screen.
The new controller’s player indicator lights up.
Good to know: a PS5 accepts a maximum of four active controllers. Each controller stores four pairings, called slots. When all four are taken, the least recently used one is replaced, so a controller often plugged into other devices can lose the console.
To choose a slot, hold an action button and the PS button: Triangle for slot 1, Circle for slot 2, Cross for slot 3, Square for slot 4. To switch to the device saved in that slot, hold the same combination for 3 seconds. Wireless slot switching is not possible while the controller is plugged in over USB.
According to user reports, distance, obstacles and other Bluetooth devices can interfere with the connection; Sony does not mention this. When testing, stay close to the console.
Solution 5: update the controller and the console
- Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > DualSense Wireless Controller Device Software.
- If an update is offered, install it.
- Update the PS5 to the latest system software from the console’s settings.
Controller updates also arrive with system software updates. They can also be done from a PC.

If nothing works
If the reset, cable pairing, a different cable, a different port and the updates have changed nothing, try the controller on another console or on a PC. If it fails everywhere, the controller is at fault. If it works elsewhere, look at the console.
From the PlayStation DualSense help page, open the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic and choose the type of fault: pairing, disconnects, battery, joystick or buttons, vibration. You can also go through the retailer.
For the same problem on another console, see Xbox controller won’t connect; to play on a computer, read how to use a PS5 DualSense controller on a PC.

Frequently asked questions
How do I reset a PS5 controller?
Press the reset button hidden in the small hole on the back, next to the Sony logo, for at least 5 seconds using a pin. Do it with the console off and the USB cable unplugged. Then connect the controller to the PS5 with the cable and press the PS button.
Why is my PS5 controller flashing blue and not connecting?
The light bar keeps blinking while the connection fails: the controller is not paired with the console. Connect it with a USB cable that transfers data and press the PS button. If it keeps blinking, reset the controller with the button on the back.
How do I connect a PS5 controller wirelessly for the first time?
The first connection is made by cable: connect the controller to the PS5 while it is on and press the PS button. Once the player indicator lights up, unplug the cable and the controller works wirelessly. With a controller that is already paired, you can also use the Bluetooth Accessories menu and the Create + PS combination.
My PS5 controller won’t turn on any more. Is it dead?
Not necessarily: a flat battery, a charge-only cable or a faulty USB port cause the same symptom. Charge it on the console with a different cable and port, then check the level in the control center. If it stays off on another console or a PC, run the PlayStation Repairs diagnostic.
