Xiaomi has just made the Redmi 17 official in its global version, in two models: a Redmi 17 5G and a Redmi 17 4G. Both share the same chassis, the same 6.9-inch display and, above all, the same 7,500 mAh battery, a capacity that is rare in this price bracket. The Redmi 17 4G starts at around 669 Malaysian ringgit, roughly $163. Here is what separates them and who they are for.
A 7,500 mAh battery, the central argument

This is the figure that deserves your attention. 7,500 mAh is nearly 50% more than the average current flagship, which usually tops out around 5,000 mAh. On a device with a power-frugal LCD panel and an entry-level processor, that translates comfortably into two days of battery life in normal use, sometimes more.
Charging follows a decent pace for the segment: 45 W wired. Xiaomi adds 22.5 W wired reverse charging, an underrated feature that lets you use the phone as a power bank to rescue another device. With a 7,500 mAh reserve, that use case becomes genuinely practical, particularly in areas where the electricity supply is unreliable.
A 6.9-inch 120 Hz display, but LCD

Both models share a 6.9-inch HD+ LCD panel (1,600 x 720 pixels), with an adaptive refresh rate of 120 Hz and a peak brightness rated at 825 nits. Protection comes from Corning Gorilla Glass 7i.
Let us be precise about what that implies. 120 Hz means the screen refreshes 120 times per second instead of 60: scrolling looks noticeably smoother, and it is a real day-to-day comfort. On the other hand, HD+ resolution across a 6.9-inch diagonal gives a modest pixel density — fine text will look less crisp than on a Full HD+ panel. And unlike OLED, LCD cannot switch off individual pixels: blacks lean towards dark grey and contrast stays average.
It is a deliberate trade-off. At this price, a Full HD+ OLED panel would have forced cuts elsewhere, most likely on the battery.
5G or 4G: the only real difference is under the hood
The two devices are visually identical. The distinction lies in the processor and memory.
- Redmi 17 5G: Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip built on 4 nm, LPDDR4X RAM and UFS 2.2 storage, in 4 or 6 GB RAM configurations with 128 or 256 GB of storage.
- Redmi 17 4G: MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra chip and slower eMMC 5.1 storage.
That last point deserves an explanation, because it is often overlooked. UFS 2.2 and eMMC 5.1 are two storage memory technologies. UFS works in full duplex, meaning it can read and write simultaneously, whereas eMMC alternates. In practice this shows up when launching apps, installing updates and copying large files. The Redmi 17 4G will therefore feel less responsive day to day, regardless of its chip.
Add the absence of 5G, and the price gap between the two models is fairly well justified in favour of the 5G version if your budget allows.
Cameras: 50 megapixels and no overselling

Both Redmi 17 models carry a dual rear module with a 50-megapixel main sensor assisted by software processing, and an 8-megapixel front sensor.
Expect decent results in daylight and clearly more limited ones in low light: that is the constant of this price segment, where the main sensor does the work and the second module stays largely decorative. The Redmi 17 5G also keeps the 3.5 mm headphone jack, gone from almost every mid-range and premium device.
Should you buy it?
The Redmi 17 targets a specific profile: someone who wants to last two days without a charger, a large smooth display, and who accepts giving up display sharpness and night photography.
- The Redmi 17 5G is the right choice if you keep your phones for a long time: UFS storage and 5G compatibility will let it age far better.
- The Redmi 17 4G only makes sense if 5G is not deployed where you live and price is the deciding factor.
- If display quality matters to you, look instead at the Redmi Note line, which offers a Full HD+ AMOLED panel for a reasonable premium.
On that last point, the Redmi Note 14 5G remains a solid, widely available reference, with its 6.67-inch 120 Hz AMOLED display and 108-megapixel sensor.

In summary
The Redmi 17 does not try to impress on the spec sheet. It concentrates its budget on a single axis — battery life — and does it seriously, with 7,500 mAh and genuinely useful reverse charging. For simple, heavy use far from a power socket, that is a hard argument to beat at this price.
European pricing has not yet been announced; we will update this article once it is published.
