Moto G Stylus 5G Returns Bigger, Better, More Stylish But Slightly Less Affordable

The 5G version of the Moto G Stylus has excellent autonomy, an improved screen and a more useful stylus than ever. However its cameras are mediocre.

The Moto G Stylus 5G has a huge 6.8-inch FHD+ display, 256GB of storage and a huge 5,000mAh battery.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Price and Availability

Moto G Stylus 5G
$339.99

The Moto G Stylus 5G costs $399. The retail model comes with 256GB of storage and 6GB of RAM. You also get sub-6GHz 5G and a new rounded stylus. The Moto G Stylus 4G 2021 cost $299 when it was released earlier this year.

It’s available since June 14 in Dark Green and White colors.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Design

The Moto G Stylus 5G has a glossy finish on a beautiful dark green that unfortunately turns out to be a fingerprint magnet.

The Moto G Stylus 5G won’t fit in some pockets, because it has a large screen, room for the stylus and a big battery.

The design of the Moto G Stylus 5G is surprisingly modern, with thin bezels on the front and a punchy cutout in the screen for the selfie camera. The four rear cameras and flash are housed in a rectangular array in the upper left corner on the back of the phone. The fingerprint sensor is integrated with the Moto logo on the back.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Screen Quality

For $399, the Moto G Stylus 5G’s screen is more than acceptable. It does very well for streaming, video calls, browsing our gallery. It’s 6.8 inches in size, with FHD+ resolution to make sure your texts are sharp.

Since it’s an LCD panel, the blacks aren’t as deep as on an OLED screen and it’s easy to see that with the permanent display.

In lab tests, the Moto G Stylus 5G handled 130.6% of the sRGB spectrum and 92.5% of the more difficult DCI-P3 range. That’s a better score than the $300 OnePlus Nord N10 5G, which also has an LCD display – it managed 124.8% of the sRGB range and 88.4% of the DCI-P3 range. However, its Delta-E color accuracy score (where 0 is perfect) was quite high at 0.36 versus the Nord N10’s best 0.22.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Camera Quality

The Moto G Stylus 5G is equipped with four cameras: a 48 MP main camera, an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 5 MP macro and a 2 MP depth sensor. Despite its high specifications, the Pixel 4a, which is the best photography experience for under $400 has done much better.

The Moto G Stylus is still a good phone for taking photos when the ambient light is very good. In other settings, it produces very poor images.

In night mode, the Moto G Stylus 5G will be quite good, but still not enough to compete with the Pixel 4a

The Moto G Stylus 5G has a 16MP front camera for your selfies that is not that much better than the rear cameras.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Battery Life and Charging

The Moto G Stylus 5G is a champion of battery life. Its battery has a total capacity of 5,000 mAh. According to Motorola, you can use the Moto G Stylus 5G for 2 days before it discharges completely. The tests confirmed these figures.

And that’s a very good thing because the Moto G Stylus 5G supports up to 10W of charging. That, combined with the 5,000 mAh battery, means long charge times. In tests, it goes from 0 to 12% in 15 minutes. It takes 30 minutes for it to reach 25%. This is too long. Fortunately, once charged, the phone takes a long time to discharge.

Moto G Stylus 5G: Software And Stylus Support

The Moto G Stylus 5G comes with Android 11 out of the box, with Motorola’s My UX customization engine. This allows you to change parts of the user interface, such as icon shapes and colors. It’s not as robust as what you’ll find on OnePlus’ OxygenOS or what’s coming in Android 12, but it’s better than what you’ll find currently on Pixels or Samsung’s One UI.

The Moto G Stylus 5G’s stylus is the reason many will want to buy it. On this side, Motorola has delivered on its promises. It’s a comfortable stylus to hold and use, it works very well; especially in the Moto Note app. Plus, it’s fully rounded so you don’t have to worry about orientation when you reinsert the stylus into the phone.

Writing with the stylus on the Moto G’s screen is very natural

In the end, costing $399 and offering a stylus, 5G support and a large battery, the Moto G Stylus 5G is a good deal. However, it is not recommended for photography lovers.
