What types of calls can be made with Amazon Alexa
Alexa allows you to make a call between two compatible Amazon Echo devices or a video call between two Echo Show smart screens. You can also make calls to cell phones and landlines. Finally, it’s even possible to make group calls.
Amazon Echo: Can you text with Alexa?
Yes, you can send messages between multiple Echo devices. You can even use Alexa on smartphone and Amazon Fire to send those texts.
Alexa Calling and Messaging is the feature that makes calling and texting possible on Echo devices. However, free calls are only available in a few countries including the US, UK, Canada and Mexico. Other countries will follow in 2022.
How to Make Free Calls with an Amazon Echo
Before you can use this feature, you need to set it up.
Open the Alexa app on smartphone and tap the “Communicate” icon in the bottom left corner of the screen. A page showing all the ways you can use the Alexa app to communicate with your contacts and Alexa devices will appear.
You’ll see options for calls, messaging, arrival and announcement. Your contacts will then be imported from your smartphone. If necessary, you will have to grant some permissions to Alexa.
Once this configuration is done, a “Call” button will appear in the application. By pressing it, you will be able to launch a call from your Amazon Echo or from your phone.
Contacts with an Alexa device that you can reach have a blue check mark next to their name.
Phone calls and text messages made with an Amazon Echo go through the internet. So your call plan will not be used, but your internet plan will. Unless you are using Wifi.
Amazon Echo: How to use an Alexa voice command to make a Call
Once you’ve set up calling on your Amazon Echo devices using the Alexa app, you simply instruct your voice assistant to call whoever you want. For example, you can say “Alexa, call Carine on her cell phone” and Alexa will initiate a call to your contact’s cell phone named Carine.
You can also ask Alexa to call Carine on her Echo speaker instead of her phone. Of course, make sure you have a contact named Carine.
Amazon Echo: How to Make Group Calls with Alexa
To do this, you first need to create and manage your group calls. Open the Alexa app on your smartphone and tap the “Communicate” button. Then tap the contacts icon in the upper right corner, then tap the three dots in the upper right. You will then see options to add a contact or group. Create a new group and add contacts to it. Once done, you will be able to call all the contacts in that group at the same time.
Amazon Echo: How to send text messages with Alexa?
Simply say “Alexa, send a message”. Alexa will ask you for the name of the recipient. Give her a name that is in your contacts and she will then ask you for the content of the message. Of course, you can dictate the message as if you were talking to a person. Alexa will type it and then send it for you.
Once again, you can also send a message to one of your contacts through the Alexa app on your smartphone.
To do this, select the name of the person you want to send the message to and hold down the microphone icon to dictate your message. You can also type your message on the keyboard.
Note, however, that messages will not be sent directly to your contact’s smartphone; rather, they will be sent to their Amazon Echo or the Alexa app on their smartphone.
You’ll know you’ve received a message when the light on your Amazon Echo flashes or when you receive a notification on your smartphone. Say “Alexa read message” to hear Alexa read the contents of the received message to you on your speaker.
